In vitro antiviral activities of thymol and Limonin against influenza a viruses and SARS-CoV-2.

Emerging and re-emerging respiratory viruses represent a continuing threat to human health. The pandemic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and influenza A viruses (IAVs) are co-circulating, presenting serious threats to public health. Therefore, screening for safe and broad-spectrum antiviral candidates to control such viral infections is prioritized. Herein, this study reports the in vitro antiviral activity of some essential volatile oils (EOs) and volatile oil components including Peppermint oil, Eucalyptus oil, Clove oil, Thymol, Camphor and Limonin against two d

Sleep disruption from inhalation of biomass smoke: a basis for coincident hypertension?

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution including contemporary sources like wildland fire smoke worsens cardiovascular outcomes. Although several mechanisms for these effects have been postulated, one underexplored impact of inhaled air pollution that may mediate adverse health outcomes is sleep disruption, which is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and a trigger of multiple biological pathways linked to disease. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cardiovascular responses to air pollution, especially excursions in blood pressure, are associated with contempo

Sequential hydrotalcite precipitation, microbial sulfate reduction and in situ hydrogen sulfide removal for neutral mine drainage treatment.

This study proposed and examined a new process flowsheet for treating neutral mine drainage (NMD) from an open-pit gold mine. The process consisted of three sequential stages: (1) in situ hydrotalcite (HT) precipitation; (2) low-cost carbon substrate driven microbial sulfate reduction; and (3) ferrosol reactive barrier for removing biogenic dissolved hydrogen sulfide (H2S). For concept validation, laboratory-scale columns were established and operated for a 140-days period with key process performance parameters regularly measured. At the end, solids recovered from various depths of the ferros

Safety evaluation of toothpaste containing chloroform. I. Long-term studies in mice.

In three experiments, chloroform was administered to mice by gavage in a toothpaste base or in arachis oil, in doses up to 60 mg/kg/d on 6 days/wk for 8 wks. Control groups were left untreated or given vehicle only. In general, there were more survivors in chloroform-treated groups than in the controls. In the case of the males of three strains (C57BL, CBA and CF/1), treatment was associated with no adverse affect on the incidence of any type of neoplasm or any other parameter. In the males but not the females of a fourth strain (ICI) and in doses of 60 mg/kg/d but not of 17 mg/kg/d, exposure

Regaining apical patency after obturation with gutta-percha and a sealer containing mineral trioxide aggregate.

INTRODUCTION: MTA Fillapex (Angelus Solucoes Odontologicas, Londrina PR, Brazil) was introduced as a mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-based sealer used for endodontic obturation. There is a lack of research that evaluates the ability of different solvents to soften MTA-based sealers during retreatment. This study tested the ability of 4 commonly used endodontic solvents to soften gutta-percha and MTA Fillapex to allow for the re-establishment of apical patency. METHODS: Eighty-six extracted maxillary anterior teeth were instrumented to the working length to a size 45 (.04 taper size). Teeth w

The Effects of Cadmium Toxicity.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic non-essential transition metal that poses a health risk for both humans and animals. It is naturally occurring in the environment as a pollutant that is derived from agricultural and industrial sources. Exposure to cadmium primarily occurs through the ingestion of contaminated food and water and, to a significant extent, through inhalation and cigarette smoking. Cadmium accumulates in plants and animals with a long half-life of about 25-30 years. Epidemiological data suggest that occupational and environmental cadmium exposure may be related to various types of cancer,

[Isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans from a chesnut tree (Castanea sativa), Denizli, Turkey].

Cryptococcus neoformans is a basidiomycetous encapsulated yeast that can cause life-threatening infections in immunosuppressed humans and animals. C.neoformans/Cryptococcus gattii infections are considered to be acquired via inhalation of aerosolized particles from the environment. Avian guano, decaying tree hollows and soil are known as environmental niches. In recent years, colonization of the woody structures of different trees such as Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Tamarix hispida, Platanus orientalis and Punica granatum has been reported in the environmental study of the western Anatolian regi

Study to determine the efficacy and onset of Bonipar, a topical analgesic for the management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain.

BACKGROUND: Opioid abuse and mortality are ravaging American society, highlighting the need to find alternative effective analgesics with fewer side effects. FDA-approved topical analgesics, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pain but can cause adverse effects. Natural compounds, including essential oils, are potential therapeutic alternatives for managing musculoskeletal pain. If these compounds can provide comparable analgesia to FDA-approved products, it will increase the available options for people with pain, improving qual

Substitution of petrochemical compounds for polyphenols of natural origin reinforced with cellulose nanofibrils to formulate adhesives for wood bonding.

Vegetable tannins are excellent options to produce adhesives for the panel industry since they have the capacity to reduce formaldehyde emissions and are derived from renewable sources. They also allow for the possibility of increasing the resistance of the glue line through the use of natural reinforcements such as cellulose nanofibrils. Condensed tannins, polyphenols isolated from tree bark, are widely studied for the production of natural adhesives as an alternative to commercial synthetic adhesives. So, the purpose of our research is to show a natural adhesive alternative for wood bonding.

Large-scale virtual screening of 17,967 IMPPAT phytochemicals identifies multiple CDR1 binders and reveals Apigenin-7-O-glucuronide as a putative CDR1-GSC1 dual-target lead against Candida albicans with initial in-vitro evidence.

The increasing incidence of antifungal resistance in Candida albicans, mainly mediated by multidrug efflux transporters and alterations of cell-wall biosynthesis, requires the discovery of new antifungal compounds targeting multiple pathways involved in resistance. In the present study, we employed an integrated computational-experimental workflow to identify potential antifungal phytochemicals from the Indian Medicinal Plants, Phytochemistry and Therapeutics (IMPPAT) database. In the virtual screening, a total of 17,967 phytochemicals were screened against the ATP-binding cassette efflux tran

Pharmacological Basis for the Antidiarrheal and Antispasmodic Effects of Cuminaldehyde in Experimental Animals: In Silico, Ex Vivo and In Vivo Studies.

BACKGROUND: Medicinal herbs are frequently used for the management of gastrointestinal disorders because they contain various compounds that can potentially amplify the intended therapeutic effects. Cuminaldehyde is a plant-based constituent found in oils derived from botanicals such as cumin, eucalyptus, myrrh, and cassia and is responsible for its health benefits. Despite the utilization of cuminaldehyde for several medicinal properties, there is currently insufficient scientific evidence to support its effectiveness in treating diarrhea. Hence, the present investigation was carried out to e

Lignin Selection Improves the Performance of Porous Carbon Nanofiber Electrodes in Freestanding Supercapacitors.

Lignin is an attractive precursor for renewable carbon materials due to its low cost and comparatively high carbon yield. The resulting carbons may be used in energy storage devices (supercapacitors and batteries) and structural composites. Since lignin has substantial variability in its chemical structure, influenced by its botanical origin and the method of extraction, this work explores the effect of lignin type on the structure and performance of porous carbon materials, using electrospun carbon nanofibers applied as freestanding supercapacitor electrodes as an example. Precursor nanofiber
