Comparison of the Complication Incidence in Open Versus Endoscopic Gastrocnemius Recession: A Retrospective Medical Record Review.

Gastrocnemius recession is a practical and effective procedure to address gastrocnemius equinus. It has been shown that an equinus deformity can lead to the development of plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis, and foot ulcerations. The 2 approaches to gastrocnemius recession are open and endoscopic. Both are viable options; however, both also have associated complications. We compared and evaluated the postoperative complications associated with these procedures. The electronic database of our orthopedics division at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville, was retrospectively

Injury risk and running habits in parents: Does stroller use make a difference?

Running with a stroller allows parents to stay physically active while looking after their children. However, the impact of stroller running on overuse injury risk among parents of young children is not well understood. We hypothesize that stroller runners may experience fewer injuries than non-stroller runners, due to differences in running mechanics and impact load as informed by prior biomechanical literature. This study seeks to characterize running habits and injury patterns in parent runners, examining whether stroller use affects running-related injury incidence and mileage. Parent runn

Clinical comparison of patients with ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's syndrome and psoriatic arthritis.

Between 1976 and 1989, 160 cases of seronegative spondyloarthropathy (SNSA) were admitted to the Department of Medicine at Chulalongkorn Hospital. The prevalence of idiopathic ankylosing spondylitis (IdAS) was 52 cases (32.5%), Reiter's syndrome (RS) 68 cases (42.5%), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) 28 cases (17.5%), reactive arthritis eight cases (5.0%) and Behcet's disease four cases (2.5%). Clinical comparison of the patients with IdAS, RS and PsA showed a male predominance in IdAS (90.2%), RS (97.1%) and PsA (71.4%). There was a significant difference (p < 0.01) between IdAS and PsA, and RS and

Rheumatological lesions in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

One hundred and twenty-three patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection have been referred to rheumatologists at our hospitals between October 1985 and April 1989 because of musculoskeletal symptoms. Thirty-four homosexual men presented with acute, peripheral, non-erosive arthritis (mean number of four joints affected) with the knees being involved in 23. Other features developing concurrently with arthritis included psoriasis, keratoderma blenorrhagica, plantar fasciitis, urethritis, conjunctivitis and anterior uveitis. Four of five patients investigated were HLA-B27-positive; none

Retrospective Analysis of Varied Clinical Presentations and Delayed Diagnosis in Tuberculosis affection of Extremities.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculous involvement of extremities is not rare (50% of osseous disease which is 1-8% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. These are commonly seen in larger joints followed by foot joints. These are termed milder form of tuberculosis as they are paucibacilary and have low chance of spread of infection. Also due to this nature they are often mis-diagnosed and mistreated. Invasive procedures to yield biological sample may be required to diagnose it. CASE REPORT: We report a series of 7 cases with involvement of extremities. Anatomical sites involved were lateral humeral condyle, fle

Nontuberculous mycobacterial infection of the musculoskeletal system in immunocompetent hosts.

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) were considered saprophytic organisms for many years but now are recognized as human pathogens. Although humans are routinely exposed to NTM, the rate of clinical infection is low. Such infections usually occur in the elderly and in patients who are immunocompromised. However, there has been an increasing incidence in recent years of infections in immunocompetent hosts. NTM infections in immunocompetent individuals are secondary to direct inoculation either contamination from surgical procedures or penetrating injuries rather than hematogenous diss

Chronic Tonsillitis as a Focal Infection: A Decade-Long Case Involving Severe Systemic Symptoms.

Unlike acute tonsillitis, which is readily recognized as infectious, chronic tonsillitis, tonsilloliths, and tonsillar detritus are often considered non-infectious and benign, despite their potential to act as focal infections causing systemic inflammatory symptoms that are frequently overlooked when tonsillar compression is not performed. We report the case of a 29-year-old female with a decade-long history of progressive musculoskeletal pain, episodic low-grade fever, headaches, and exercise-induced inflammatory arthralgia affecting the feet, ankles, wrists, and spine. The initial otolaryngo

Added value of pre-procedural magnetic resonance angiography in transarterial embolization for refractory musculoskeletal pain.

BACKGROUND: Transarterial microembolization (TAME) is a minimally invasive treatment for chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Identifying angiogenesis and the supplying vessels of the target joint is important but challenging. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used to diagnose musculoskeletal diseases, it typically excludes vascular imaging. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (DCE-MRA) has the ability to visualize lesion angiogenesis, identify supplying vessels, and evaluate the vasculature anatomy. We propose that incorporating DCE-MRA into pre-procedur
