All-cause and cause-specific mortality in gambling disorder: Evidence from a nation-wide matched and sibling cohort study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling disorder (GD) has been linked to suicidal ideation and suicide deaths; however, evidence on all-cause and cause-specific mortality-particularly in Asian populations-remains limited. Using a retrospective cohort study based on nationwide matched and sibling cohort, we investigated all-cause and cause-specific mortality risk in patients with GD. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using 2000-2022 data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. A cohort of 961 individuals diagnosed with GD was identified. An a

Identifying predictors of early non-recovery in a compensation setting: The Whiplash Outcome Study.

CONTEXT: People with Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) often experience pain and disability for extended periods of time. A large proportion of these people will seek treatment through a compensation process. Rarely is data related to people's health collected within the compensation process making it difficult to identify those that are at risk of delayed recovery and appropriately direct interventions. STUDY OBJECTIVE: To compare people with WAD who have recovered with those that have not, within 3 months of injury and identify potential predictors of poorer health and non-recovery to info

Mental Findings in Trauma Victims.

INTRODUCTION: In medico-legal evaluation of trauma patients, the bio-psychological effects of the trauma and the severity of the injuries require to be evaluated. In this study, assuming the fact that psychiatric assessment is not taken into consideration in physical trauma cases, we planned to show the presence of psychological trauma in our medico-legally evaluated patients who presented with different types of traumas and to review the mental findings and diagnoses in trauma victims. METHOD: We retrospectively analyzed the hospital records of 1975 patients aged 18 years or older who presen

Hypoglycaemia and driving in people with insulin-treated diabetes: adherence to recommendations for avoidance.

BACKGROUND: Hypoglycaemia impairs driving performance, so drivers with insulin-treated diabetes should try to avoid hypoglycaemia when driving, and treat it effectively if it occurs. It is not known how many insulin-treated drivers are familiar with, or adhere to, recommended safe practice. METHODS: We surveyed a representative sample of 202 current drivers with insulin-treated diabetes (115 with Type 1 diabetes), using a structured questionnaire. Data were obtained on driving history, estimated frequency of hypoglycaemia, and measures taken to avoid and treat hypoglycaemia when driving. RES

Hypoglycaemia and accident risk in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with non-insulin antidiabetes drugs.

AIMS: To assess associations between hypoglycaemia and risk of accidents resulting in hospital visits among people with type 2 diabetes receiving antidiabetes drugs without insulin. METHODS: People with type 2 diabetes who were not treated with insulin were identified from a US-based employer claims database (1998-2010). Following initiation of an antidiabetes drug, the occurrence of accidents resulting in hospital visits was compared between people with, and without, claims for hypoglycaemia using multivariable Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for demographics, comorbidities, prior tr

Non-helmeted motorcyclists: a burden to society? A study using the National Trauma Data Bank.

INTRODUCTION: Helmet laws remain controversial. Opponents believe negative findings are a result of biased statistical analyses that fail to account for the impact of alcohol and drugs. In this study, we evaluated the effect that helmet use had upon injury severity, outcome controlling for alcohol or drug use, resource utilization, and financial burden using the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB). METHODS: Two groups of patients, helmeted and non-helmeted motorcyclists, were identified using the NTDB over an 8-year period. Group differences were compared using nonparametric Wilcoxon tests for c

Preliminary inter-rater reliability of the wheelchair components questionnaire for condition.

PURPOSE: The Wheelchair Components Questionnaire for Condition (WCQ-C) enables the collection of data on wheelchair maintenance condition and durability in resource-limited environments. It can be used in large studies to indicate typical patterns of wear at a location, or for a type of wheelchair. It can also be used in clinical settings as an evidence based indication that a wheelchair may need repair or replacement. This type of data can enable effective use of limited funds by wheelchair providers, manufacturers and users. The goal of this study was to investigate the inter-rater reliabili

Shoulder Rehabilitation Exercises With Kinematic Biofeedback After Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair: Protocol for a New Integrated Rehabilitation Program.

BACKGROUND: The recovery of scapular and humeral physiological kinematic parameters, as well as the sensorimotor control of movement, plays a primary role in the rehabilitation process after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. A highly customized rehabilitation approach is required to achieve this aim. Biofeedback can be a useful tool, but there is poor evidence of its application in the rehabilitation after arthroscopic rotator cuff tear repair. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to outline an innovative exercise-based rehabilitation program exploiting visual biofeedback for the recovery of p

Predictors of severe or multiple subsequent injuries over 24 months among an already-injured cohort in New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION: Interventions to reduce subsequent injuries among already-injured people presenting to healthcare providers may reduce the overall burden of injury. However, in order to develop such interventions it is necessary to understand what predicts subsequent injuries. This knowledge is currently limited for general injury populations. This prospective Subsequent Injury Study aims to determine pre-injury sociodemographic and heath factors, and injury-related factors, that predict subsequent injury claims reported to Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC, New Zealand's universal injury i

Intracranial extension of salivary gland tumors.

INTRODUCTION: There is some evidence to suggest that Americans living in rural areas are at increased risk for sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) compared to those living in urban areas. In addition, once a TBI has been sustained, rural residents have worse outcomes, including a higher risk of death. Individuals living in rural areas tend to live farther from hospitals and have less access to TBI specialists. Aside from these factors, little is known what challenges healthcare providers practicing in rural areas face in diagnosing and managing TBI in their patients and what can be done

Injuries in home health care workers: an analysis of occupational morbidity from a state compensation database.

BACKGROUND: Home health services represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the US economy. Home health care workers (HHCWs) might be expected to have a high incidence and increased severity of injury because of inherent difficulty in control over their work environment, and the limited amount of research on injuries in home health care appears to support this hypothesis. METHODS: Using data on workers' compensation claims for 1995-1996 from a large state database, we calculated the incidence, frequency, and types of injuries occurring in this working population. Comparison data were dr
