A 61-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with 2-day history of malaise and dyspnea. He had mitral prolapse and type II diabetes mellitus with neurogenic bladder, which was cared for by catheterization on his own. On arrival the patient was in septic condition with hypoxemia, and physical examination revealed systolic murmur at the apex. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed vegetation of the mitral and the aortic valve. The presence of continuous bacteremia was confirmed by multiple sets of blood culture, whereby gram-positive cocci was retrieved and identified as Staphylococcus saprop

A 10-month-old boy with a previous upper spinal cord injury was admitted to hospital with acute respiratory and circulatory distress. Shortly after admission the boy had severe bradycardia leading to asystolia and pulseless electrical activity. He was successfully resuscitated, and the investigation that followed excluded infection, congenital heart defect, arrhythmia and cerebral haemorrhage. Over the following days the patient had several episodes of isolated bradycardia and combined bradycardia and hypotension. It was concluded that the patient suffered from autonomic dysreflexia, triggered

PURPOSE: Patients with anorectal malformation (ARM) and associated sacral agenesis (SA) are at increased risk of long-term bowel and bladder dysfunction, but outcome data to guide early counselling and follow-up remain limited. We aimed to evaluate bowel and bladder outcomes in patients with concurrent ARM and SA, with a focus on transanal irrigation (TAI) and clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) use.
METHODS: In this retrospective single-center cohort study, all patients with ARM and SA born between January 2000 and January 2024 were included. SA was diagnosed radiologically and classifi

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the long-term outcome of a contemporary series of 64 children who underwent complete primary repair of bladder exstrophy (CPRE) in a single tertiary referral center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1998 and 2012, 64 children, 47 boys and 17 girls, were identified. Only 60 of the 64 cases were available for follow-up. The follow-up was done by renal bladder ultrasound and serum creatinine every 3 months and voiding cystourethrogram from 6 to 12 months postoperatively. Continence was defined as dryness ≥3 hours.
RESULTS: Median (range) follow-up is 14 years (from 5 to

PURPOSE: We instituted early clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) in 1997 for all newborn infants with spina bifida (SB). We compared this group to a historical group managed expectantly to see if early catheterization was associated with a reduction in renal scar rate as determined by DMSA scanning.
METHODS: Data were studied retrospectively on all infants with SB over a recent 13-year period who were treated with early universal CIC in a regional pediatric urology department. These were compared to our previously published outcomes in a historical group (1985-1994) that was managed expe

OBJECTIVE: Previous randomized controlled trials have reported a 6.1-6.9% incidence of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) following treatment with onabotulinumtoxinA in non-neurogenic overactive bladder (OAB) patients who were inadequately managed by ≥1 anticholinergic. A multi-center retrospective chart review assessed the real-world rate of voiding dysfunction requiring catheterization.
METHODS: Patients received onabotulinumtoxinA 100 U (approved dose) administered by experienced injectors between January 2013 and June 2015. Patients using CIC or an indwelling catheter for ≥24 hours

Ochoa syndrome is rare and its major clinical problems frequently unrecognized. We describe facial characteristics of six patients to help health professional recognize the inverted smile that these patients present and refer them to proper treatment. Patients' medical records were reviewed and patients' urological status clinically reassessed. At last evaluation patients' mean age was 15.5 years, and age ranged from 12 to 32 years. Mean follow-up was 35 months (12 to 60). Initial symptoms were urinary tract infections in four patients (67%) associated with enuresis and incontinence in three o

OBJECTIVE: To verify, in a retrospective analysis, the effectiveness of endoscopic treatment (collagen injection) in children with neurogenic bladder and neurogenic urinary incontinence.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 1992 to March 1997, 36 endoscopic collagen injections were performed to treat neurogenic urinary incontinence in 23 patients (mean age 10.9 years, range 6-17 at the time of the first procedure) selected on the basis of clinical status and the patient's motivation. Nineteen patients were affected by myelomeningocele and four had an occult spinal dysraphism. All patients under

AIMS: Cerebral palsy (CP) is characterized by motor impairments as a result of brain injury during development. Patients can have neurogenic bladder dysfunction and are often unable to catheterize through their native urethra. Catheterizable channel (CC) creation can facilitate clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). We have observed that patients with large capacity, low-pressure bladders can develop de novo neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) postoperatively. We sought to better characterize this finding.
METHODS: We reviewed the charts of patients 17 years or older with CP seen betwee

BACKGROUND: Appendicovesicostomy is commonly employed to facilitate drainage of urine through the catheter. Due to the tendency to less invasive procedures for the treatment of patients with neurogenic bladder, laparoscopy has been used as an alternative to open surgery, with the immediate advantages of postoperative recovery, shorter postoperative ileus, better cosmetic results, lower postoperative pain and early reintegration into everyday life.
PURPOSE: Compare the results of laparoscopic procedure with open appendicovesicostomy.
METHODS: We conducted an observational, analytical, longitu

To describe how to perform urological evaluation in children with tethered cord syndrome (TCS). Although a common manifestation of TCS is the development of neurogenic bladder in developing children, neurosurgeons often face difficulty in detecting urological problems in patients with TCS. From a urological perspective, diagnosis of TCS in developing children is further complicated due to the differentiation between neurogenic bladder dysfunctions and transient bladder dysfunctions owing to developmental problems. Due to the paucity of evidence regarding evaluation prior to and after untetheri

INTRODUCTION: Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract (CAKUT) are structural disorders originating prenatally and present at birth. Affecting 4.2 to 1000 per 10,000 births globally, CAKUT includes conditions like posterior urethral valves, cloacal anomalies, and reflux nephropathy. These anomalies can lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD) or end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in children, necessitating renal replacement therapy or transplantation.
OBJECTIVES: This article aims to provide an updated perspective on pediatric kidney transplantation for children with CAKUT, emphasizing p

Background: MRI-guided transurethral ultrasound ablation (TULSA) is under investigation for whole-gland ablation of low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer. The ideal method for post-TULSA bladder drainage through postoperative suprapubic tube (SPT) vs indwelling urethral catheter (UC) has not been established. The objective of this study was to evaluate urinary outcomes after whole-gland TULSA, comparing postoperative SPT with UC. Materials and Methods: Two-institution retrospective analysis of whole-gland TULSA for men with grade group 1 and 2 prostate cancer. One institution placed SPT a
