The aim of the paper is to review the role of interventional radiology in the management of hemodialysis vascular access and complications in renal transplantation. The evaluation of patients with hemodialysis vascular access is complex. It includes the radiology/ultrasound (US) evaluation of the peripheral veins of the upper extremities with venous mapping and the evaluation of the central vein prior to the access placement and radiological detection and treatment of the stenosis and thrombosis in misfunctional dialysis fistulas. Preoperative screening enables the identification of a suitable

The field of pediatric kidney transplantation remains challenging due to an ongoing lack of size-matched grafts and anatomical peculiarities. In the current study, we investigated the incidence of surgical complications in pediatric recipients, with a focus on risk factors and effects on graft outcome. We retrospectively reviewed all 2386 kidney transplantations at our institution from January 2005 until December 2018. Of these, 221 transplants were performed in pediatric recipients, defined as under the age of 18 years. Donor-recipient body surface area ratios were calculated to evaluate the

Kidney transplantation has become the treatment of choice for patients with end stage renal disease since it offers an excellent quality of life. Moreover, the economic impact is considerable, particularly beyond the first year. Indeed, the annual cost of a successful renal transplantation is ten fold lower than haemodialysis. But surgical complications remain one of our main concerns. Surgical complications are various. They may be non-specific as haematomas, incision-induced hernias and wound infections. They may also be directly related to the procedure as vascular thrombosis and urinary fi

BACKGROUND: Surgical-site infection (SSI) is a relevant complication in vascular surgery due to its associated morbidity and mortality. However, the optimal type of skin closure (intradermal suture versus metallic staples) to minimize SSI rates has been scarcely studied. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of SSI associated with intradermal suture versus metallic staples in patients undergoing arterial surgery through a groin femoral approach.
METHODS: A multicentre, open-label, superiority RCT was conducted between April 2022 and January 2024 across three tertiary hospitals (t

BACKGROUND: At our center, surgical modifications to the conventional kidney transplant technique were developed with two goals in mind: to minimize the risk of developing post-transplant urologic/vascular/other surgical complications, and to simultaneously eliminate the need for initial ureteral stent placement and surgical drainage.
METHODS: Here, the authors describe these modifications along with (what we believe are) their advantages over the conventional technique: creating an abdominal flap for easier abdominal closure (reflecting the parietal peritoneum from the abdominal wall), mobil

Surgical complications subsequent to the kidney transplantation are not infrequent and they are characterized by the high percentage of graft loss (596-18% in standard surgical procedures and up to 37% in atypically performed transplantations). The study included 311 transplanted patients (206 (66.2%) living donors and 105 (33.8%) cadaver donors). Surgical complications developing during the immediate posttransplantation period as well as during the late period (after a year and a half) were classified as: I urinary complications; II vascular complications; III other complications. INTRODUCTION: Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is the standard approach for nodal staging in clinically node-negative (cN0) patients with unifocal vulvar cancer ≤4 cm. Patients outside these criteria undergo lymphadenectomy, although many prove node-negative. The prospective GroSNaPET study evaluated SNB followed by lymphadenectomy in these patients. This report presents updated outcomes, long-term follow-up, and complication data.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center prospective study included cN0 patients ineligible for standard SNB due to ≥1 of the following: tumor >4 cm, multifocality, pri
