Verbal and nonverbal fluency in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a multi-system disorder that commonly affects cognition and behaviour. Verbal fluency impairments are consistently reported in ALS patients, and we aimed to investigate whether this deficit extends beyond the verbal domain. We further aimed to determine whether deficits are underpinned by a primary intrinsic response generation impairment (i.e., a global reduction across tasks), potentially related to apathy, or an inability to maintain responding over time (i.e., a 'drop off' pattern). Twenty-two ALS patients and 21 demographically-matched controls compl

Long-term neurocognitive and educational outcomes of neonatal insults in Kilifi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: There is little data on the long-term neurocognitive and educational outcomes among school-aged survivors of neonatal jaundice (NNJ) and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in Africa. This study investigates the long-term neurocognitive and educational outcomes and the correlates of these outcomes in school-aged survivors of NNJ or HIE in Kilifi, Kenya. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on neurocognitive and educational outcomes among school-aged survivors (6-12 years) of NNJ (n = 134) and HIE (n = 107) and compared them to a community comparison group (n = 134). Comparing the emotional reactions and behavioral intentions of violent and nonviolent husbands to aggressive, distressed, and other wife behaviors.

The present study was designed to compare the self-reported emotional reactions and behavioral intentions of violent and nonviolent husbands to a variety of wife behaviors depicted with standardized stimuli. We recruited four subject groups, including 25 men beginning domestic violence treatment programs and three groups from the community-21 maritally violent and maritally distressed men, 23 nonviolent/distressed men, and 28 nonviolent/nondistressed men. Using stimuli and measures derived from Biglan, Rothlind, Hops, and Sherman (1989), along with stimuli designed for this study, subjects rea

Self-relevance modulates brain responses to angry body expressions.

In a social context, the direction of the body of surrounding agents indicates whether one is the potential target of an impending action or simply an observer, and thus influences the way one processes and reacts to their emotional expressions. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment investigated how self-relevance influences anger processing in the brain by independently manipulating target (oriented to self or to other) and emotion (neutral and anger). The perception of body expression of anger elicits activity in a previously identified network that includes the amygda

Creating low vision and nonvisual instructions for diabetes technology: an empirically validated process.

INTRODUCTION: Nearly 20% of the adults with diagnosed diabetes in the United States also have visual impairment. Many individuals in this group perform routine diabetes self-management tasks independently, often using technology that was not specifically designed for use by people with visual impairment (e.g., insulin pumps and pens). Equitable care for persons with disabilities requires providing instructions in formats accessible for nonreaders. However, instructions in accessible formats, such as recordings, braille, or digital documents that are legible to screen readers, are seldom availa

Amygdala volume and nonverbal social impairment in adolescent and adult males with autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism is a syndrome of unknown cause, marked by abnormal development of social behavior. Attempts to link pathological features of the amygdala, which plays a key role in emotional processing, to autism have shown little consensus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate amygdala volume in individuals with autism spectrum disorders and its relationship to laboratory measures of social behavior to examine whether variations in amygdala structure relate to symptom severity. DESIGN: We conducted 2 cross-sectional studies of amygdala volume, measured blind to diagnosis on high-resolution, anatomical

A four-year longitudinal study of palatal plate therapy in children with Down syndrome: effects on oral motor function, articulation and communication preferences.

The orofacial function in 20 children with Down syndrome was evaluated after 4 years of palatal plate therapy in 9 of the children (PPG); the remaining 11 were untreated age-matched controls (CG). All 20 children had received continuous orofacial physical therapy from their speech therapist during the treatment period. A clinical extra- and intraoral examination was performed, including oral motor function, facial expression, the occurrence of malocclusions, and hypertrophic tonsils. A questionnaire requesting data on breathing patterns, drooling, eating problems, and communicative preferences

Hearing Status Affects Children's Emotion Understanding in Dynamic Social Situations: An Eye-Tracking Study.

OBJECTIVES: For children to understand the emotional behavior of others, the first two steps involve emotion encoding and emotion interpreting, according to the Social Information Processing model. Access to daily social interactions is prerequisite to a child acquiring these skills, and barriers to communication such as hearing loss impede this access. Therefore, it could be challenging for children with hearing loss to develop these two skills. The present study aimed to understand the effect of prelingual hearing loss on children's emotion understanding, by examining how they encode and int

Association between restricted and repetitive behaviors and nonverbal IQ in children with autism spectrum disorders.

The present study explored the relationship between nonverbal IQ and restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in 830 children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The role of chronological age as a moderator of this relationship was also investigated. For many behaviors, there was a significant interaction between nonverbal IQ and chronological age, such that nonverbal IQ (NVIQ) was more strongly related to the prevalence of RRBs in older children. For the majority of such behaviors (e.g. repetitive use of objects, hand and finger mannerisms), RRB prevalence was negatively associated with NVIQ. H

The "Sensory Paradox": Exploring the Positive Association Between Hyper- and Hypo-Responsivity to Sensory Stimuli in Autism and Beyond.

BACKGROUND: Differences in sensory processing are a core feature of autism spectrum disorder. Hyper- and hyporesponsivity to sensory stimuli have historically been conceptualized as separate constructs but may co-occur within individuals. Sensory processing may impact both lower and higher-level cognitive processes; thus, it is crucial to understand the relationships between hyper- and hyporesponsivity within and across modalities, as well as the relationship between sensory processing and other aspects of development in both autistic and typically developing (TD) children. METHODS: In 3-4-ye

[The acquisition of language through finger spelling in a child with auditory agnosia (author's transl)].

A child with auditory agnosia for verbal and nonverbal sounds was reported. He was born without difficulty and his early development was normal. At the age of 14 months, he suffered from herpes simplex encephalitis and fell in a trance. Soon after he recovered from the illness, he found not to pay any attention to sounds and not to speak any words. He was referred to Teikyo University hospital at 2.5 years of age for the hearing measurement. The average threshold of conditioned orientation reflex audiometry at 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz were 85 dB, while the threshold of auditory brain stem respons

NOD-m: a novel clinical score for predicting hearing loss in inherited metabolic disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Inherited metabolic disorders (IMD) are rare genetic conditions resulting from disruptions in metabolic pathways, often leading to multisystemic complications. Hearing loss (HL) is a significant but under-recognized manifestation of IMD. Its prevalence, subtypes, timing, and systemic associations remain poorly characterized. This study aims to systematically evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of HL in a large cohort of patients with IMD, emphasizing associated clinical and laboratory findings. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 996 patients diagnosed with IM

Advancing observer-reported outcome measurement: development of the MOOD-AS for observing distress in Angelman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Angelman syndrome (AS) often experience profound communication impairment and intellectual disability, and as a result, are often unable to self-report on their experiences of emotional distress, including experiences of anxiety. However, existing measures of anxiety primarily depend on verbal descriptions of internal states, making them unsuitable tools for assessing the nature and severity of distress through observer-report for this population. To address this gap, we developed the Measure of Observable Outcomes of Distress in Angelman Syndrome (MOOD-AS), a nove

A Therapeutic Game for Sexually Abused Children and Adolescents (Vil Du?!): Exploratory Mixed Methods Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Talking about experiences of sexual abuse in therapy is difficult for children and adolescents. Possible reasons for this difficulty are a lack of vocabulary to describe the situation or feelings of shame, fear, and self-blame associated with sexual abuse. The serious game Vil Du?! was developed to help children open up about their sexual abuse experiences. Vil Du?! is a nonverbal communication game that resembles a dress-up game in which children can show the therapist what happened to them. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory evaluation study examines which working elements of the game

Facial nerve transfer for facial reanimation with parotidoplasty approach.

BACKGROUND: Facial paralysis has a profound impact on quality of life in affected individuals, primarily through loss of verbal and nonverbal communication. Common facial nerve reanimation techniques include coaptation to the masseteric or hypoglossal nerve. Most techniques require nerve grafts to achieve a tension-free neurorrhaphy. Our report aims to show a surgical adaption to current facial reanimation procedures using a partial parotidoplasty approach in order to avoid challenges caused by interpositional nerve grafts through primary neurorrhaphy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The modified surgi

Randomized controlled trial of vitamin D supplementation in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a frequent developmental disorder characterized by pervasive deficits in social interaction, impairment in verbal and nonverbal communication, and stereotyped patterns of interests and activities. It has been previously reported that there is vitamin D deficiency in autistic children; however, there is a lack of randomized controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation in ASD children. METHODS: This study is a double-blinded, randomized clinical trial (RCT) that was conducted on 109 children with ASD (85 boys and 24 girls; aged 3-10 years). The ai

Intervention targeting development of socially synchronous engagement in toddlers with autism spectrum disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Social and communication impairments are core deficits and prognostic indicators of autism. We evaluated the impact of supplementing a comprehensive intervention with a curriculum targeting socially synchronous behavior on social outcomes of toddlers with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). METHODS: Fifty toddlers with ASD, ages 21 to 33 months, were randomized to one of two six-month interventions: Interpersonal Synchrony or Non-Interpersonal Synchrony. The interventions provided identical intensity (10 hours per week in classroom), student-to-teacher ratio, schedule, home-based par

A Review on Autism Spectrum Disorder: Pathogenesis, Biomarkers, Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological Interventions.

Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complicated developmental disease characterized by persistent difficulties in social interaction, speech and nonverbal communication, and restricted/ repetitive activities. Our goal is to deliver a step ahead awareness on neurodevelopment in ASD through early behavioral screenings, genetic testing, and detection of various environmental triggers. This would significantly reduce the tally of people with autistic characteristics. As of now, much work is to be done in understanding and treating ASD. Firstly, awareness campaigns must be organized and maintaine
