Evidence for the acquisition of a proteorhodopsin-like rhodopsin by a chrysophyte-infecting giant virus.

Chrysophytes are nanoflagellate protists widespread in aquatic ecosystems with diverse trophic roles as primary producers and bacterivores. Molecular evidence suggests that chrysophytes are commonly infected by giant viruses, but isolates of such virus-host systems have not been reported. Here, we describe the first cultivated chrysophyte-infecting virus, Chrysophyceae Clade H virus SA1 (ChrysoHV), isolated along with its phago-mixotrophic host alga from surface waters in the tropical North Pacific Ocean. The ChrysoHV capsid (290 ± 40 nm diameter) is associated with a loose, sac-like membrane

Effects of terrestrial dissolved organic matter on a bloom of the toxic cyanobacteria, Raphidiopsis raciborskii.

The concentration of coloured terrestrial dissolved organic matter (tDOM) from vegetation appears to be increasing in lakes in some regions of the world, leading to the term brownification. The light attenuating effect of coloured tDOM on phytoplankton growth has been a major focus of attention, but the phytotoxic effects of tDOM, particularly on cyanobacterial blooms, are less well understood. This mesocosm study tested whether coloured tDOM, leached from the leaves of a Eucalyptus tree species, inhibited a naturally occurring bloom of the toxic cyanobacterium, Raphidiopsis raciborskii, in a

Giant viruses specific to deep oceans show persistent presence and activity.

Giant viruses (GVs) of the phyla Nucleocytoviricota and Mirusviricota are large double-stranded DNA viruses that infect diverse eukaryotic hosts and impact biogeochemical cycles. Their diversity and ecological roles have been well studied in the photic layer of the ocean, but less is known about their activity, population dynamics, and adaptive strategies in the aphotic layers. Here, we conducted eight seasonal time-series samplings of the surface and mesopelagic layers at a coastal site in Muroto, Japan, and integrated 18S metabarcoding, metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic data to investigate

Arctic marine ecosystem contamination.

The current state of knowledge of levels, spatial and temporal trends of contaminants in the Arctic marine ecosystem varies greatly among pollutants and among environmental compartments. Levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine (OC) pesticides and some heavy metals such as mercury and lead, in Arctic marine mammals and fish are relatively well documented because of the need for comparisons with biota in more polluted environments and interest in the contamination of native diets. Levels of heavy metals, alkanes, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and OCs in the Arctic Ocean are

Lipid nanocapsules for behavioural testing in aquatic toxicology: Time-response of Eurytemora affinis to environmental concentrations of PAHs and PCB.

The increasing interest for behavioural investigations in aquatic toxicology has heightened the need for developing tools that allow realistic exposure conditions and provide robust quantitative data. Calanoid copepods dominate the zooplankton community in marine and brackish environments. These small organisms have emerged as attractive models because of the sensitivity of their behaviour to important environmental parameters and the significance of self-induced motion in their ecology. Estuarine copepods are particularly relevant in this context because of their incessant exposure to high le

Predicting Consumer Biomass, Size-Structure, Production, Catch Potential, Responses to Fishing and Associated Uncertainties in the World's Marine Ecosystems.

Existing estimates of fish and consumer biomass in the world's oceans are disparate. This creates uncertainty about the roles of fish and other consumers in biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes, the extent of human and environmental impacts and fishery potential. We develop and use a size-based macroecological model to assess the effects of parameter uncertainty on predicted consumer biomass, production and distribution. Resulting uncertainty is large (e.g. median global biomass 4.9 billion tonnes for consumers weighing 1 g to 1000 kg; 50% uncertainty intervals of 2 to 10.4 billion to

Documenting the duration and chlorophyll pigments of an allochthonous Karenia brevis bloom in the Loxahatchee River Estuary (LRE), Florida.

In Fall 2017 a large bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Karenia brevis developed in the Gulf of Mexico. After persisting for months, in Fall 2018 wind and water circulation patterns drove K. brevis towards the east coast of Florida. On September 29, 2018 Palm Beach County, FL beaches were closed due to respiratory and gastrointestinal issues associated with brevotoxins, and effects of brevotoxins were reported from within estuarine segments of the Loxahatchee River Estuary (LRE). This was the first apparent report of a K. brevis bloom impacting inshore portions of the LRE prompting us to questi

Nutrient and other environmental controls of harmful cyanobacterial blooms along the freshwater-marine continuum.

Nutrient and hydrologic conditions strongly influence harmful planktonic and benthic cyanobacterial bloom (CHAB) dynamics in aquatic ecosystems ranging from streams and lakes to coastal ecosystems. Urbanization, agricultural and industrial development have led to increased nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) discharge, which affect CHAB potentials of receiving waters. The amounts, proportions and chemical composition of N and P sources can influence the composition, magnitude and duration of blooms. This, in turn, has ramifications for food web dynamics (toxic or inedible CHABs), nutrient and oxyg

Interactive effects of solar UV radiation and climate change on biogeochemical cycling.

This report assesses research on the interactions of UV radiation (280-400 nm) and global climate change with global biogeochemical cycles at the Earth's surface. The effects of UV-B (280-315 nm), which are dependent on the stratospheric ozone layer, on biogeochemical cycles are often linked to concurrent exposure to UV-A radiation (315-400 nm), which is influenced by global climate change. These interactions involving UV radiation (the combination of UV-B and UV-A) are central to the prediction and evaluation of future Earth environmental conditions. There is increasing evidence that elevated

Interactions between stoneworts (Charales) and waterbirds.

Stoneworts (Charales) are green algae that represent an important food resource for many waterbird species in Europe and elsewhere. Browsing avian herbivores (e.g. swan, goose, duck and coot species) consume Charales plant vegetative parts, by head-dipping, up-ending or diving. A lower fibre content and longer growing season may make Charales as attractive to such herbivores as sympatric submerged higher plant species in some circumstances. Charales respond to environmental stress (e.g. drought) by producing abundant diaspores, in the form of oospores (sexual) and bulbils (asexual), both rich

Harmful algal blooms and their effects in coastal seas of Northern Europe.

Harmful algal blooms (HAB) are recurrent phenomena in northern Europe along the coasts of the Baltic Sea, Kattegat-Skagerrak, eastern North Sea, Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea. These HABs have caused occasional massive losses for the aquaculture industry and have chronically affected socioeconomic interests in several ways. This status review gives an overview of historical HAB events and summarises reports to the Harmful Algae Event Database from 1986 to the end of year 2019 and observations made in long term monitoring programmes of potentially harmful phytoplankton and of phycotoxins in

The Rationale for Using Neridronate in Musculoskeletal Disorders: From Metabolic Bone Diseases to Musculoskeletal Pain.

Neridronate or ((6-amino-1-hydroxy-1-phosphonohexyl) phosphonic acid) is an amino-bisphosphonate (BP) synthetized in Italy in 1986. Bisphosphonates are molecules with a P-C-P bond in their structure that allows strong and selectively binding to hydroxyapatite (HAP) as well as osteoclasts inhibition through different mechanisms of action. Neridronate was initially used to treat Paget disease of the bone, demonstrating effectiveness in reducing bone turnover markers as well as pain. The interesting molecular properties of neridronate foster its wide use in several other conditions, such as osteo

Suppression Effect of Astaxanthin on Osteoclast Formation In Vitro and Bone Loss In Vivo.

Osteoporosis is characterized by a reduction of the bone mineral density (BMD) and microarchitectural deterioration of the bone, which lead to bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. Astaxanthin (AST) has a variety of biological activities, such as a protective effect against asthma or neuroinflammation, antioxidant effect, and decrease of the osteoclast number in the right mandibles in the periodontitis model. Although treatment with AST is known to have an effect on inflammation, no studies on the effect of AST exposure on bone loss have been performed. Thus, in the present study, we

Advanced Technologies for Large Scale Supply of Marine Drugs.

Marine organisms represent a source of unique chemical entities with valuable biomedical potentialities, broad diversity, and complexity. It is essential to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply of marine natural products (MNPs) for their translation into commercial drugs and other valuable products. From a structural point of view and with few exceptions, MNPs of pharmaceutical importance derive from the so-called secondary metabolism of marine organisms. When production strategies rely on marine macroorganisms, harvesting or culturing coupled with extraction procedures frequently remain t
