Sensory conflict compared in microgravity, artificial gravity, motion sickness, and vestibular disorders.

UNLABELLED: Perceptual disturbances and motion sickness are often attributed to sensory conflict. We investigated several conditions: head movements in microgravity, periodic motions in 1-g, and locomotion with vestibular disorders. In every case, linear vectors such as linear and gravitational acceleration are crucial factors, as previously found for head movements in artificial gravity, and thus the importance of measuring linear vectors emerges as a common theme. By modeling the sensory conflict between the vestibular and somatosensory systems, we computed a measure of linear conflict known

Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire Scores Highlight Specific Benefits of Adjunctive Glottoplasty With Voice Therapy in Treating Voice Feminization.

BACKGROUND: Treatment options to assist patients to produce a more perceptually feminine voice include voice therapy (VT) and surgeries to elevate pitch such as the Wendler glottoplasty (WG). The Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire (TWVQ) is a validated quality of life measure for trans women's self-reported perceptions of their voice and is frequently administered before and after such interventions. The 30 statements broadly pertain to how feminine a patient feels their voice is, how effortful it is to produce their voice, and how their voice impacts them psychosocially, making it a useful and s

Dissociation between melodic and rhythmic processing during piano performance from musical scores.

When performing or perceiving music, we experience the melodic (spatial) and rhythmic aspects as a unified whole. Moreover, the motor program theory stipulates that the relative timing and the serial order of the movement are invariant features of a motor program. Still, clinical and psychophysical observations suggest independent processing of these two aspects, in both production and perception. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to dissociate between brain areas processing the melodic and the rhythmic aspects during piano playing from musical scores. This behavior requires

Altered neuronal response during rapid auditory processing and its relation to phonological processing in prereading children at familial risk for dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a learning disability affecting 5-17% of children. Although researchers agree that DD is characterized by deficient phonological processing (PP), its cause is debated. It has been suggested that altered rapid auditory processing (RAP) may lead to deficient PP in DD and studies have shown deficient RAP in individuals with DD. Functional neuroimaging (fMRI) studies have implicated hypoactivations in left prefrontal brain regions during RAP in individuals with DD. When and how these neuronal alterations evolve remains unknown. In this article, we investigate functio

Mechanisms of cross-modal plasticity in early-blind subjects.

A variety of studies have demonstrated enhanced blood oxygenation level dependent responses to auditory and tactile stimuli within occipital cortex as a result of early blindness. However, little is known about the organizational principles that drive this cross-modal plasticity. We compared BOLD responses to a wide variety of auditory and tactile tasks (vs. rest) in early-blind and sighted subjects. As expected, cross-modal responses were larger in blind than in sighted subjects in occipital cortex for all tasks (cross-modal plasticity). Within both blind and sighted subject groups, we found

Environmental enrichment increases paired-pulse depression in rat auditory cortex.

Temporal features are important for the identification of natural sounds. Earlier studies have shown that cortical processing of temporal information can be altered by long-term experience with modulated sounds. In a previous study, we observed that environmental enrichment dramatically increased the response of cortical neurons to single tone and noise burst stimuli in both awake and anesthetized rats. Here, we evaluate how enrichment influences temporal information processing in the auditory cortex. We recorded responses to repeated tones and noise bursts in awake rats using epidural evoked

Effect of simulated bilateral cochlear distortion on speech discrimination in normal subjects.

Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss may introduce grossly dissimilar cochlear distortion at the two ears, causing abnormal demands to be made upon the cortical analytical centres which normally receive congruent information. As a result, the prescription of binaural hearing aids may be a handicap rather than a help. In order to explore this possibility, 10 normal subjects were presented with simulated, dissimilar cochlear distortion at the two ears. Discrimination scores with binaural presentation were poorer than the best monaural score and there were clear indications that in the former, su

Humans need auditory experience to produce typical volitional nonverbal vocalizations.

Human nonverbal vocalizations such as screams and cries often reflect their evolved functions. Although the universality of these putatively primordial vocal signals and their phylogenetic roots in animal calls suggest a strong reflexive foundation, many of the emotional vocalizations that we humans produce are under our voluntary control. This suggests that, like speech, volitional vocalizations may require auditory input to develop typically. Here, we acoustically analyzed hundreds of volitional vocalizations produced by profoundly deaf adults and typically-hearing controls. We show that dea

Awake craniotomy for assisting placement of auditory brainstem implant in NF2 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) may be the only opportunity for patients with NF2 to regain some sense of hearing sensation. However, only a very small number of individuals achieved open-set speech understanding and high sentence scores. Suboptimal placement of the ABI electrode array over the cochlear nucleus may be one of main factors for poor auditory performance. In the current study, we present a method of awake craniotomy to assist with ABI placement. METHODS: Awake surgery and hearing test via the retrosigmoid approach were performed for vestibular schwannoma resections

Frequency-specific hearing outcomes in pediatric type I tympanoplasty.

IMPORTANCE: Middle ear disease is the primary cause of hearing loss in children and has a significant impact on language development and academic performance. Multiple prognostic factors have previously been examined, but there is little published data regarding frequency-specific hearing outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between type I tympanoplasty in a pediatric population and frequency-specific hearing changes, as well as the relationship between several prognostic factors and graft retention. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective medical chart review (February

Dichotic phase effects on frequency following responses reveal phase variant and invariant harmonic distortion products.

The dichotic frequency following responses (FFR) have been used in studies to infer about dichotic auditory processing. In the present study, we hypothesize that the proximity of the binaural neural generators of the FFR would result in interference of the volume-conducted electrical fields. This might lead to contamination of the scalp-recorded dichotic FFRs due to which it might be difficult to infer about true dichotic processing in the putative neural generators. We investigated this by recording FFRs to binaurally presented 200 Hz pure tone with graded dichotic phase offsets (0°, 90°, 180

The role of stimulus complexity, spectral overlap, and pitch for gap-detection thresholds in young and old listeners.

Thresholds for detecting a gap between two complex tones were determined for young listeners with normal hearing and old listeners with mild age-related hearing loss. The leading tonal marker was always a 20-ms, 250-Hz complex tone with energy at 250, 500, 750, and 1000 Hz. The lagging marker, also tonal, could differ from the leading marker with respect to fundamental frequency (f0), the presence versus absence of energy at f0, and the degree to which it overlapped spectrally with the leading marker. All stimuli were presented with steeper (1 ms) and less steep (4 ms) envelope rise and fall t

Effect of broadband and narrowband contralateral noise on psychophysical tuning curves and otoacoustic emissions.

The relative effectiveness of narrowband and broadband noises in activating the efferent system was assessed by comparing the effect of contralateral stimulation (CS) with such sounds on psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) determined in simultaneous masking, using signal frequencies of 1000 or 2000 Hz. To check that the CS stimuli used did activate the efferent system, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were also measured in the absence and presence of narrowband and broadband CS. The CS had no consistent effect on the masker level at the tips of the PTCs. A broadband pink noise

The timing and temporal patterns of eye blinking are dynamically modulated by attention.

A number of human behaviors and movements show self-similar temporal patterns in their occurrence over time. Human walking, finger tapping and heartbeat intervals have fluctuations that are statistically similar at multiple time scales. However, whether eye blinking, which is a unique human behavior that occurs spontaneously, embeds a similar temporal structure within other types of movements is largely unknown. In this study, we used attention-requiring tasks to assess how the temporal pattern of eye blinking is altered in both the second and sub-second time scales. Our results showed that ey

Is the linguistic content of speech less salient than its perceptual features in autism?

Open-ended tasks are rarely used to investigate cognition in autism. No known studies have directly examined whether increased attention to the perceptual level of speech in autism might contribute to a reduced tendency to process language meaningfully. The present study investigated linguistic versus perceptual speech processing preferences. Children with autism and controls were tested on a quasi-open-format paradigm, in which speech stimuli contained competing linguistic and perceptual information, and could be processed at either level. Relative to controls, children with autism exhibited

Assessment of outer hair cell function and blood antioxidant status of rabbits exposed to noise and metal welding fumes.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the interaction between welding fumes and noise in causation of hearing impairment. METHODS: Groups of rabbits (n=6) were exposed to noise, welding fumes or combination of both prior to Distortion Product Otoacoustic-Emissions (DPOAEs) analysis. The function of outer hair cells (OHCs) was examined by DPOAE assessment over a broad range of frequencies. Variations in DPOAE amplitude were compared between control (n=6) and exposed (n=18) groups. RESULTS: The DPOAEs levels measured at different frequencies (1379-6299 Hz) were found to decrease significantly (P<0.05) in

Association of central obesity with the severity and audiometric configurations of age-related hearing impairment.

To investigate the effect of central obesity on the severity and characteristics of age-related hearing impairment (ARHI), we recruited 690 adult subjects with normal or symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). The effects of age, gender, morphometry, habits, systemic diseases, and environmental noise exposure on average pure tone hearing level at low frequencies (pure tone audiometry (PTA)-low) and high frequencies (PTA-high) were analyzed. After adjusting for age, gender, systemic disease, and other variables, waist circumference (WC) showed a significant positive association with PTA-

Temporomandibular joint biomechanics and equine incisor occlusal plane maintenance.

In equine dentistry, the physiological incisor occlusal surface is visually perceived as a plane with a distinct inclination to the head's coronal plane, extending rostro-ventrally to caudo-dorsally. To better understand the formation of this inclined plane and its connection to dental wear, we investigated the hypothesis that it arises from masticatory movements and the considerable distance between mandibular articular heads and the incisor occlusal surfaces, acting as the three points of support for the mandibles. Leveraging data from a large-scale clinical study involving static and dynami

The Interplay of Preference, Familiarity and Psychophysical Properties in Defining Relaxation Music.

BACKGROUND: The stress response has been well documented in past music therapy literature. However, hypometabolism, or the relaxation response, has received much less attention. Music therapists have long utilized various music-assisted relaxation techniques with both live and recorded music to elicit such a response. The ongoing proliferations of relaxation music through commercial media and the dire lack of evidence to support such claims warrant attention from healthcare professionals and music therapists. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of these 3 studies was to investigate the correlational relat
