[Daily life disability associated with dementia].

Daily life disability associated with dementia including Alzheimer disease involves a series of difficulties in performing daily tasks. People with this disability have difficulty in being active individually, participating in society, and carrying out daily tasks. Evidence suggests that its causes are lesions in specific areas of the brain. For example, focal lesions appear to be specifically correlated with symptoms of apraxia and agnosia. In general, cognitive decline in the course of dementing illnesses worsens as brain lesions expand. This may be accompanied by the impairment of other org

Morphology and histology of the alimentary tracts of ambassidae (Cuvier) (Teleostei) in relation to feeding.

The gross morphology and histology of the alimentary tracts of three species of glassy perchlet; Ambassis productus, A. natalensis, and A. gymnocephalus from estuaries on the southeast coast of Africa were investigated. The anatomy of the digestive tracts in all three species was found to be similar. Well-developed dentition and pharyngeal teeth together with a distensible stomach and a low relative gut length (RGL) suggest a predatory and carnivorous habit for all three species. The relative gut lengths of Ambassis species from different estuarine systems are compared‥ Differences in RGL for

The effect of injury on the properties of afferent fibres in the lingual nerve.

The receptor properties of mechanosensitive afferent fibres in the lingual nerve have been studied using electrophysiological techniques in cats. In normal animals some fibres responded only to mechanical stimulation of filiform or fungiform papillae but others also responded when a cold stimulus was applied to the receptive field. Twelve weeks after crushing the lingual nerve, the regenerated fibres had slower conduction velocities but the receptor properties were not significantly different from normal. Twelve weeks after sectioning the lingual nerve, there was a greater reduction in conduct

Anterograde axonal transport and intercellular transfer of WGA-HRP in trigeminal-innervated sensory receptors of rat incisive papilla.

The ultrastructure and identification of WGA-HRP-labeled sensory receptors in the rat incisive papilla (the most anterior part of hard palate) were studied using semiserial thin sections. Various sensory receptors were organized according to three locations: dome region (ventral), chemosensory corpuscle region (medial to orifice of incisive canal), and lateral labium (apposing the incisive canal). In the dome region, the sensory receptors were localized in three sensory zones that were associated with surface ridges (one medial and two lateral). In each of these zones, intraepithelial receptor

Comparative Study of Lingual Papillae, Lingual Glands and Lyssa of the Tongue of Selected Wild Felids (Carnivora, Felidae) in Biological Aspects.

Although much attention has been paid in the literature to the morphology of the tongue in various animal species, including some Felidae, it has not yet been described in detail in the vulnerable Neofelis nebulosa and Panthera leo bleyenberghi and the last concern Lynx lynx and Otocolobus manul. Therefore, the present study aimed to characterize the features of the tongue surface, lingual glands and lyssa in the above-mentioned four selected wild species of the Pantherinae and Felinae subfamilies. Macroscopic, histological, histochemical and ultrastructural analyzes were used in the present w

SCN2B in the Rat Trigeminal Ganglion and Trigeminal Sensory Nuclei.

The beta-2 subunit of the mammalian brain voltage-gated sodium channel (SCN2B) was examined in the rat trigeminal ganglion (TG) and trigeminal sensory nuclei. In the TG, 42.6 % of sensory neurons were immunoreactive (IR) for SCN2B. These neurons had various cell body sizes. In facial skins and oral mucosae, corpuscular nerve endings contained SCN2B-immunoreactivity. SCN2B-IR nerve fibers formed nerve plexuses beneath taste buds in the tongue and incisive papilla. However, SCN2B-IR free nerve endings were rare in cutaneous and mucosal epithelia. Tooth pulps, muscle spindles and major salivary g

Morphological features of the tongue and laryngeal entrance in two predatory birds with similar feeding preferences: common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and Hume's tawny owl (Strix butleri).

The aim of this investigation was to describe the morphological characters of the tongue of two predatory birds with similar feeding preferences, i.e. the common kestrel and Hume's tawny owl. Descriptive information on the lingual morphology of these two birds, particularly Hume's tawny owl, is incomplete. We found that the lingual apex of the owl has an oval, concave, shovel-like form with a bifid lingual tip, while that of the kestrel has the shape of a horny tip-like spoon with a central process in addition to there being several filiform-like papillae on the dorsal surface of the apex and

Functional role for interleukin-1 in the injured peripheral taste system.

The peripheral taste system presents an excellent model for studying the consequences of neural injury, for the damaged nerve and sensory cells and the neighboring, intact neural cells. Sectioning a primary afferent nerve, the chorda tympani (CT), rapidly recruits neutrophils to both sides of the tongue. The bilateral neutrophil response induces transient functional deficits in the intact CT. Normal function is subsequently restored as macrophages respond to injury. We hypothesized that macrophages produce the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1, which contributes to the maintenance of

Separate and distinctive roles for Wnt5a in tongue, lingual tissue and taste papilla development.

Although canonical Wnt signaling is known to regulate taste papilla induction and numbers, roles for noncanonical Wnt pathways in tongue and taste papilla development have not been explored. With mutant mice and whole tongue organ cultures we demonstrate that Wnt5a protein and message are within anterior tongue mesenchyme across embryo stages from the initiation of tongue formation, through papilla placode appearance and taste papilla development. The Wnt5a mutant tongue is severely shortened, with an ankyloglossia, and lingual mesenchyme is disorganized. However, fungiform papilla morphology,

Reflex apnoea response and inflammatory mediators in infants with respiratory tract infection.

The reflex apnoea response to water stimulation was evaluated in infants with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and compared to the response in non-infected infants who had sustained an apparent life-threatening event (ALTE) or were siblings of infants who had died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). RSV-infected infants had a significantly (p < 0.05) reinforced reflex apnoea response compared with non-infected infants. There was a significant negative correlation between the concentration of interleukin 1 beta (IL-I beta) in pharyngeal secretions and the duration of apnoea (p <

Topical ATP Application in the Peripheral Swallowing-Related Regions Facilitates Triggering of the Swallowing Reflex Involving P2X3 Receptors.

The swallowing reflex is a critical component of the digestive process, triggered when food or liquids pass from the oral cavity to the oesophagus. Although adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is involved in various physiological processes, its potential to trigger the swallowing reflex has not been fully explored. This study investigated the ability of ATP to induce the swallowing reflex and examined the involvement of the purinoreceptor P2X3 in this process. We observed that the topical application of exogenous ATP to the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN)-innervated swallowing-related regions dose-dep

Fernando de Castro and the discovery of the arterial chemoreceptors.

When de Castro entered the carotid body (CB) field, the organ was considered to be a small autonomic ganglion, a gland, a glomus or glomerulus, or a paraganglion. In his 1928 paper, de Castro concluded: "In sum, the Glomus caroticum is innervated by centripetal fibers, whose trophic centers are located in the sensory ganglia of the glossopharyngeal, and not by centrifugal [efferent] or secretomotor fibers as is the case for glands; these are precisely the facts which lead to suppose that the Glomus caroticum is a sensory organ." A few pages down, de Castro wrote: "The Glomus represents an orga

Morphological specializations of the buccal cavity in relation to the food and feeding habit of a carp Cirrhinus mrigala: a scanning electron microscopic investigation.

The buccal cavity of an herbivorous fish, Cirrhinus mrigala, was investigated by scanning electron microscopy to determine its surface ultrastructure. The buccal cavity shows significant adaptive modifications in relation to food and feeding ecology of the fish. The buccal cavity of the fish is of modest size and limited capacity, which is considered an adaptation with respect to the small-sized food items primarily consumed by the fish that could be accommodated in a small space. Modification of surface epithelial cells, on the upper jaw, into characteristic structures-the unculi-is considere

Anatomical Characteristics of Tongue-Innervating Mechanoreceptors.

Mechanosensory innervation of the oral cavity enables us to detect the texture and location of the foods we consume. Our goal was to find a genetic identifier for a mechanoreceptive subtype. Toward this goal, we examined neurons expressing the neurotrophin receptor TrkC (TrkC-tdTomato), parvalbumin (Pvalb), or glutamate transporter, Vglut3. We found that the majority of Pvalb-lineage, Vglut3-lineage, and TrkC-tdTomato neurons innervating the tongue are separate trigeminal neuron populations. Because different papilla types contribute to food detection in different ways, we examined the innerva

Pooled PPIseq: Screening the SARS-CoV-2 and human interface with a scalable multiplexed protein-protein interaction assay platform.

Protein-Protein Interactions (PPIs) are a key interface between virus and host, and these interactions are important to both viral reprogramming of the host and to host restriction of viral infection. In particular, viral-host PPI networks can be used to further our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of tissue specificity, host range, and virulence. At higher scales, viral-host PPI screening could also be used to screen for small-molecule antivirals that interfere with essential viral-host interactions, or to explore how the PPI networks between interacting viral and host genomes co-evo

Time dependent ultrastructural alterations on the skin, eye, barbel and fins of the spawn of Clarias batrachus (Linn. 1758) exposed to UV-B radiation.

Present study highlighted the ultramicroscopic (SEM) alterations of the skin, eye, barbel, and fins of spawn of an air-breathing teleost (Clarias batrachus, Linn. 1758) induced by UV-B radiation (280-320 nm) at a dose (@4.07 × 10-20J/photon/m2) under the time-frame of 5, 10 and 15 min/d in the laboratory condition for the periods of 5 and 10 days. Limnological parameters revealed no significant changes throughout the period of experimentation which were measured by PCS Testr 35 Multi-Parameter. Morphometric analysis revealed that during the extended exposure period of 10 days the spawn size an

Developmental expression pattern of monoamine oxidases in sensory organs and neural crest derivatives.

Serotonin (5-HT) has been shown to act as a morphogen in craniofacial and heart development and in the migration of neural crest derivatives. Some of these structures are capable of capturing 5-HT during development, but nothing is known about the localization of the main monoamine degradation enzymes, monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B, in these developing tissues. We generated a highly specific antibody to MAOB; immunoreactivity is entirely abolished in brain extracts or brain sections of mice lacking MAOB. From the use of this antibody and specific riboprobes, we report that MAOB is expressed

Vertebrate-wide transcriptomic screening identifies immune cell-specific expression of the conserved OR-κ gene.

Vertebrate chemoreceptor genes play a central role in detecting environmental chemical compounds through the olfactory organs and taste buds, enabling the perception of odors and tastants that are critical for survival. Through evolutionary processes, these genes have repeatedly undergone duplication, divergence, and pseudogenization, giving rise to lineage-specific gene repertoires that reflect ecological and behavioral adaptation. While the canonical functions of these chemoreceptors are confined to the nasal and oral cavities, accumulating evidence, particularly in mammals, indicates that s

Increased activity of mesenchymal ALK2-BMP signaling causes posteriorly truncated microglossia and disorganization of lingual tissues.

Proper development of taste organs including the tongue and taste papillae requires interactions with the underlying mesenchyme through multiple molecular signaling pathways. The effects of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and antagonists are profound, however, the tissue-specific roles of distinct receptors are largely unknown. Here, we report that constitutive activation (ca) of ALK2-BMP signaling in the tongue mesenchyme (marked by Wnt1-Cre) caused microglossia-a dramatically smaller and misshapen tongue with a progressively severe reduction in size along the anteroposterior axis and abse
