Glomus tumors are benign neoplasms typically found in the fingers and usually present with localized pain, swelling, and cold sensitivity. Extradigital glomus tumors are rare, and their diagnosis is often delayed due to atypical location and lack of cold sensitivity. In this article, we report a unique case of an extradigital glomangioma, a subset of glomus tumors, masquerading as more common ulnar-sided wrist pathology, such as a triangular fibrocartilage complex tear or extensor carpi ulnaris tendinitis. The patient presented with a two-year history of gradually worsening ulnar-sided wrist p

Pain in the dorsoulnar region of the wrist is a common complaint and may be caused by a variety of pathologies. Longitudinal tears of the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon are among them, and it has recently been noted that these lesions are more frequent than previously thought. Most ECU injuries can be managed conservatively. Surgical treatment is indicated in cases of tendon rupture, especially when associated with instability or injury to the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). In such cases, the procedure should include tendon debridement with resection of inflammatory tissue, deb

We reviewed retrospectively a series of 128 consecutive patients who had wrist arthroscopy at our institution between January 1988 and July 1991. The aim of the procedure was to establish a diagnosis in 27 patients, to challenge a pre-operative diagnosis in 95 patients and to evaluate joint surfaces in six patients. For the 27 patients with a previously unknown diagnosis, the diagnostic sensitivity was 67% and the specificity 100%. Arthrotomy or other intervention was avoided in 18. For the 95 patients with an established pre-operative diagnosis, arthrotomy was avoided in 45: in 26 the desired

INTRODUCTION: The radiocarpal complex is the structure formed by the distal radioulnar, radiocarpal and midcarpal joints; these joints are compartments, each anatomically separated from the other. An appropriate arthrographic study with three-compartment injection better demonstrates the capsuloligamentous structures than conventional radiography. The diagnosis of any condition in this complex may therefore be easier to make.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 1993 to December 1996, twenty-six patients with mild to moderate wrist and carpal sprain and previously examined with radiography, wer

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 7 Tesla (T) and 3 T in patients with clinically suspected injury of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) or the scapholunate ligament (SLL) using wrist arthroscopy as a reference standard.
METHODS: Twenty-four patients scheduled for wrist arthroscopy due to suspected TFCC or SLL injury were examined with 7-T and 3-T MRI before arthroscopy. Four musculoskeletal radiologists independently evaluated the MR examinations in randomized order, and the findings were compared to those at wrist art

Chronic hand and wrist pain is a common presenting complaint. The intricate anatomy results in a variety of pain generators-multiple bones, articular cartilage, intrinsic ligaments, triangular fibrocartilage complex, joint capsules and synovium, tendons and tendon sheaths, muscles, and nerves-in a compact space. The need for imaging and the choice of the appropriate imaging modality are best determined by the patient's presentation, physical examination, and the clinician's working differential diagnosis. Radiography is usually appropriate as the initial imaging study in the evaluation of chro

Background Multiple techniques have been developed to detect a triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) foveal detachment. One commonly used technique to evaluate TFCC integrity, the trampoline test, has had variable reliability. Questions/Purposes The purpose of this biomechanical experiment was to evaluate the suitability of the trampoline test in detecting TFCC foveal detachments. Materials and Methods In each of 10 cadaver arms, TFCC displacement near the ulnar fovea was measured using a plunger with increasing incremental loads in the intact wrist, after ulnar sectioning of the TFCC, a

INTRODUCTION: The chronic instability of the DRUJ should be appropriately treated. Ligament reconstruction in the original technique needs an adequate length of the graft, which needs to be modified in such a case.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old male presented with right wrist pain accompanied by limited movement that has been felt for the last two months. There was an obvious deformity with tenderness. Palpation revealed a positive ballottement and piano-key sign test. An X-ray examination revealed a union fracture one-third distally on the right radius bone with dorsal dislocation of the

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis of the lunate bone (Kienböck's disease), is a condition in which lunate bone, loses its blood supply, leading to necrosis of the bone. There is probably no single cause of Kienbock's disease. Its origin may involve multiple factors, such as the blood supply (arteries), blood drainage (veins), and skeletal variations. Trauma, either isolated or repeated, may possibly be a factor in some cases. This case presented with multifactorial etiology.
CASE REPORT: In the presented case, a patient with negative ulnar variant had injured her right wrist and presented at an

Distal radioulnar joint is a trochoid joint relatively new in evolution. Along with proximal radioulnar joint, forearm bones and interosseous membrane, it allows pronosupination and load transmission across the wrist. Injuries around distal radioulnar joint are not uncommon, and are usually associated with distal radius fractures, fractures of the ulnar styloid and with the eponymous Galeazzi or Essex_Lopresti fractures. The injury can be purely involving the soft tissue especially the triangular fibrocartilage or the radioulnar ligaments. The patients usually present with ulnar sided wrist pai

The prevalence of osteoarthritis of the hand and wrist is high, and a thorough assessment of even subtle cartilage injuries is necessary before surgical interventions. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been established as an important diagnostic tool for the evaluation of hand and wrist disorders, the focus has been on the assessment of the triangular fibrocartilage complex, tendons, ligaments, and the detection of avascular necrosis or occult fractures rather than on cartilage imaging. 3-T MR systems have become more and more widely available and yield an improved signal-to-noise

The wrist is at risk for injury in many athletic endeavors, often in acute falls or dorsiflexion injuries and at other times from repetitive stress involved with fitness routines or specific motions called for in the sport. Dorsiflexion accounts for most wrist problems giving rise to compression injuries dorsally such as scaphoid impaction, triquetrohamate impaction, and occult ganglions. These are seen most often in weight lifters, gymnasts, and push-up enthusiasts. Tension injuries occur on the palmar aspect of the wrist with disruption or attenuation of the supporting ligaments or interosse

BACKGROUND: Report on surgical management of ulnar impaction syndrome secondary to chronic Monteggia fractures are limited, and optimal techniques and outcomes remain unclear. Herein, we report a case in which preoperative stress evaluation followed by diaphyseal-level ulnar-shortening osteotomy led to favorable clinical outcomes.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54-year-old woman with a childhood forearm injury presented with ulnar-sided wrist pain. Imaging revealed ulnar impaction syndrome with foveal triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injury. An asymptomatic anterior radial head dislocation, cons

BACKGROUND: The majority of published literature on ganglion cysts in children has been from a surgical perspective, with no dedicated radiologic study yet performed.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging appearance of ganglion cysts in a series of paediatric MR wrist examinations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-seven consecutive paediatric MR wrist examinations were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of ganglion cysts. Only those studies with wrist ganglia were included. Cysts were assessed for location, size, internal characteristics and secondary effec

Intraarticular step and gap displacements represent the most common indication for surgical treatment of distal radius fractures. Most often, treatment decision making relies only on good-quality plain radiographs taken before and after reduction with measurement accuracy maximized by using the longitudinal axis method. When plain radiographs alone prove insufficient, CT scans or tomograms will significantly improve interobserver and intraobserver reliability of measurements, especially when evaluated using the arc method. Tomography is an effective method for postoperative evaluation of fract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of arthroscopic scapholunate (SL) and/or lunotriquetral (LQ) laxity and triangular fibrocartilaginous complex (TFCC) injuries in patients who have an intraarticular fracture of the distal radius and to correlate these lesions with fracture type. Fifty-seven intraarticular radius fractures, whether or not they were associated with an ulnar styloid fracture, were evaluated and treated by arthroscopy. Scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligament injuries were classified according to the EWAS classification. TFCC lesions were assessed according to P

The aims of this study were to investigate the functional result and rate of osteoarthritis 15-25 years after a TFCC-repair. Forty-seven patients completed the questionnaire Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE), and 43 had new X-rays. Fifty-seven percent had a simultaneous arthroscopy. Sixteen patients had later additional surgery to the wrist, of these eight had a reoperation of the TFCC-injury due to recurrent instability. Radiographs showed that 17.5% had developed radiocarpal osteoarthritis and 34% osteoarthritis in the distal radioulnar joint. The median PRWE result was 22.5. Patients wi

INTRODUCTION: The diagnostic value of clinical tests and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for the investigation of triangular fibrocartilaginous complex (TFCC) lesions is not clear due to a lack of clinical data.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 908 patients who underwent clinical tests and arthroscopy for suspected TFCC lesions at our institution. Further, MR imaging findings concerning the TFCC were gathered. We correlated clinical tests and MR imaging findings with those obtained during arthroscopy, and we calculated sensitivity, specificity, as well as positive and negati

Magnetic resonance (MR) arthrography has been investigated in every major peripheral joint of the body, and has been proven to be effective in determining the integrity of intraarticular ligamentous and fibrocartilaginous structures and in the detection or assessment of osteochondral lesions and loose bodies in selected cases. Several methods could be used to create arthrogram effect during MR imaging, however, direct MR arthrography using diluted gadolinium as the contrast agent is the most commonly used technique and is the most reliable of all. MR arthrography is useful for demonstrating la
