A boy with a neuropathic bladder and a single hydronephrotic kidney developed hyperammonaemic encephalopathy during a urinary tract infection with Klebsiella oxytoca. Although particularly associated with Proteus infections and prune belly syndrome, hyperammonaemia can complicate infection with any urease-producing bacteria if there is urinary stasis.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infections are generally acquired during childhood and affect half of the global population, but its transmission route remains unclear. It is reported that H. pylori can be internalized into Candida, but more evidence is needed for the internalization of H. pylori in human gastrointestinal Candida and vaginal Candida.
METHODS: Candida was isolated from vaginal discharge and gastric mucosa biopsies. We PCR-amplified and sequenced H. pylori-specific genes from Candida genomic DNA. Using optical and immunofluorescence microscopy, we identified and observed bacter

Peptic ulceration is among the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorders characterized by pepsin and gastric acid mediated mucosal damage, as result of imbalance between defensive and offensive processes. The main objective of the current study was to investigate the antiulcer potentials of Polygonum hydropiper crude methanolic ectract (Ph.Cr) in aspirin induced ulcerogenesis using pylorus ligated rat model. In-vitro urease and Proteus mirabilis inhibitory potentials were evaluated using standard protocols. All fractions were analyzed using GC-MS to identify major components. The aspirin induc

Current gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) therapies either systemically suppress gastric acid, risking physiological disruption, or rely on antacid rafts that offer transient, non-responsive neutralization. We address this with a chemistry-centered strategy that spatially localizes proton conversion around the self-positioning raft at the gastric interface. The dynamic H+ conversion equilibrium system (DH+-CES) integrates a CO2-generating calcium alginate raft which physically impedes reflux via its bubble-stabilized architecture for rapid interfacial self-positioning, with an engineered

Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium that infects almost half of the global population and is linked to gastric conditions like peptic ulcers and gastric cancer, as well as other diseases such as neurological disorders, cardiovascular problems, and iron deficiency anemia. Its survival in the acidic stomach environment is due to virulence factors like urease, flagella, and adhesion proteins (BabA, SabA). Current treatments involve a combination of antibiotics (clarithromycin, metronidazole, amoxicillin, tetracycline) and proton pump inhibitors, but increasing antibiotic resistance,

Acidosis is an important immunosuppressive mechanism that leads to tumor growth. Therefore, we investigated the neutralization of tumor acidity to improve immunotherapy response. L-DOS47, a new targeted urease immunoconjugate designed to neutralize tumor acidity, has been well tolerated in phase I/IIa trials. L-DOS47 binds to CEACAM6, a cell-surface protein that is highly expressed in gastrointestinal cancers, allowing urease to cleave endogenous urea into two NH4+ and one CO2, thereby raising local pH. To test the synergetic effect of neutralizing tumor acidity with immunotherapy, we develope

To date, two Helicobacter species, Helicobacter pylori and 'Helicobacter heilmannii' (formerly named 'Gastrospirillum hominis'), have been identified from the human stomach. In this study, we observed non-H. pylori-shaped bacteria in gastric tissue sections and successfully isolated them by cultivation. Elongated bacteria were isolated from a patient with gastric-mucosa-associated lymphoid-tissue lymphoma who had been diagnosed as H. pylori-negative by culture, rapid urease test and histopathology in another hospital. The bacteria were grown only on chocolate agar in a CO2 incubator, appeared

This study examined a possible aetiological agent, namely, Helicobacter pylori, in perforated peptic ulcer disease and its relationship to persisting ulcer. Twenty-nine patients with perforated peptic ulcer underwent simple closure of the perforation at laparotomy. A 13C urea breath test carried out on the eighth day after operation was positive in 24 patients. Fourteen of 17 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy 6 weeks after discharge from hospital had a positive 13C urea breath test. The biopsy urease test performed on mucosal samples taken at endoscopy was positive in 12

Corynebacterium urealyticum is a common skin colonizer with potent urease activity. It is clinically recognized as an opportunistic pathogen causing urinary tract infections. The annotated genome sequence of strain DSM 7111, isolated from the urine of a young boy with an ectopic kidney, provides new insights into the pathomechanisms of this bacterium.

Biochemical testing plays a crucial role in the detection and confirmation of Salmonella spp. Since the cultural characteristics of Salmonella often resemble those of other enteric pathogens, differentiation based solely on growth features can be challenging. Biochemical tests allow for accurate identification by exploiting the distinct metabolic traits of Salmonella. In this study, we described three key tests, including methyl red, hydrogen sulfide production, and urease production, which are particularly important for the confirmation of Salmonella.

Calorimetry is a general method for determination of the rates of zero-order processes, but analysis of the data for the rate constant and reaction enthalpy is difficult because these occur as a product in the rate equation so evaluation of one requires knowledge of the other. Three methods for evaluation of both parameters, without prior knowledge, are illustrated with examples and compared with literature data. Method 1 requires the reaction to be studied in two buffers with different enthalpies of ionization. Method 2 is based on calculation of reaction enthalpy from group additivity functi

It is now accepted that cure of Helicobacter pylori infection will result in healing of chronic active gastritis and will change the natural history of gastroduodenal ulcer disease. A variety of highly sensitive and specific diagnostic methods have been developed over the past few years to establish whether a patient is infected with this organism. The two major categories of diagnostic tests for H. pylori are invasive methods, which require endoscopy, and noninvasive tests in which endoscopy is not necessary. Invasive tests include rapid urease tests, histology, and culture. Noninvasive tests

Helicobacter pylori, the etiologic agent of gastritis and peptic ulceration, may infect the gastric mucosa of over half of the world's population. Despite the high infection rate, symptomatic disease beyond gastritis (characterized by gastric or duodenal ulcer) is noted in a small, but nevertheless significant, fraction of this population. What defines an H. pylori strain as a pathogen that can cause the more serious clinical manifestations? In addition to the more well recognized virulence determinants, such as urease, flagella, and vacuolating cytotoxin, evidence is emerging that the more vi

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is a motile microaerophilic bacterium that colonizes the human stomach. H. pylori infection triggers gastric diseases, such as gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. Stomach represents a barrier for microorganism colonization, particularly because of its high hydrochloric acid concentration. The main mechanism developed by H. pylori to maintain intracellular pH homeostasis in this environment is the urease activity. However, urease negative strains can be also isolated from clinical samples, suggesting that H. pylori presents other components involved in ac

There is a disclosure of the results of one-week eradication therapy (esomeprazole, 20 mg + Flemoxin Solutab, 1,000 mg + Clarithromycin, 500 mg, twice a day) without any subsequent antisecretory therapy. In order to control the healing of non-complicated ulcers of the duodenal bulb, the first control endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) was conducted after 7 days, and the second one was conducted 4 weeks after the termination of patients' treatment. The healing of ulcers of the duodenal bulb was recorded in 89.5% and 89.5% of cases, respectively. A control determination of the H. pylori semi

AIM: To evaluate the predictive value of Helicobacter pylori eradication in the healing of duodenal ulcer.
METHODS: A prospective study of 92 duodenal ulcer patients (diagnosed by endoscopy) with H. pylori infection demonstrated by rapid urease test, positive histology and culture. They were treated with a 7-day regimen of lansoprazole, clarithromycin and amoxicillin. Healing was evaluated in a follow-up gastroscopy performed one month after treatment had finished. Eradication was defined as negative urease test, histology and culture at 30 days and negative urea breath test at 60 days.

H. pylori is currently identified as the dominant risk factor for chronic duodenal ulcer. The effect of surgery in the form of truncal vagotomy and drainage on the H. pylori status is not well known. Forty three patients with obstructed duodenal ulcer who were positive for H. pylori preoperatively by the urease test on the antral mucosal biopsy specimens were recalled for repeat endoscopy and urease test from the same site at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and more than 1 year after surgery. The H. pylori positivity declined from 100% preoperatively to 69%, 71%, 73% and 80% at these intervals pos

Helicobacter pylori appears to be a species with strain diversity, according to studies carried out using various molecular biological techniques. Differences in pathogenicity caused by the strain diversity of H. pylori were therefore investigated. Two hundred and thirty strains were divided into four types by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism, and their relationship to endoscopic diagnosis, ammonia concentration of gastric juice, and urease activity were assessed. With regard to incidence by type, patients infected with type 1, type 2, and type 3 exhibited the
