Extreme temperatures and the epithelial barrier theory.

Extreme temperatures are now recognized as significant global health threats, driving morbidity and mortality across diverse diseases by compromising epithelial barrier integrity and causing periepithelial inflammation. The epithelial barrier theory posits that environmentally induced barrier dysfunction, driven by modern industrial and urban exposures, leads to compromised surfaces of the exposed tissues accompanied by epithelial activation and barrier dysfunction, microbial dysbiosis, loss of commensal bacteria, opportunistic pathogen colonization, bacterial translocation, inflammation and i

Precipitation forecasting utility for proactive agroecosystem management: A case study from the Texas Gulf LTAR site.

Precipitation is a primary driver of plant production across most agroecosystems. As such, enhanced precipitation forecasting will directly benefit agroecosystem management planning and decisions related to stocking rates, crop selection, restoration seedings, and wildfire fuel loads. When precipitation occurs primarily through convective storms, as is the case in the southern Great Plains, precipitation can be extremely dynamic and difficult to forecast. Providing stakeholders accurate estimates of forecast utility would provide them with the information necessary for proactive land managemen

Spectral immune cell profiling reveals modulations in immune cell response to repetitive inhaled organic dust exposure in a high omega-3 fatty acid mouse model.

Exposure of the lungs to particulate matter (i.e. dust, wildfire smoke, air pollution) places individuals at an increased risk for developing chronic respiratory disease. Recent work has demonstrated the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids and their metabolites in promoting the resolution of prolonged inflammation, however a comprehensive understanding of how omega-3 fatty acid balance impacts immune cell populations and crosstalk remains undescribed. We developed a 17-marker, 14-color spectral flow cytometry method to characterize the immunophenotypic changes in the bronchoalveolar space and lung

Repeated exposure to eucalyptus wood smoke alters pulmonary gene and metabolic profiles in male Long-Evans rats.

Exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with both acute and chronic cardiopulmonary illnesses, which are of special concern for wildland firefighters who experience repeated exposure to wood smoke. It is necessary to better understand the underlying pathophysiology by which wood smoke exposure increases pulmonary disease burdens in this population. We hypothesize that wood smoke exposure produces pulmonary dysfunction, lung inflammation, and gene expression profiles associated with future pulmonary complications. Male Long-Evans rats were intermittently exposed to smoldering eucalyptus wood s

The Environment and Headache: a Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this narrative review, we summarize the peer-reviewed literature published between 2017 and 2022 that evaluated ambient environmental risk factors for primary headache disorders, which affect more than half of the population globally. Primary headache disorders include migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), and trigeminal and autonomic cephalalgias (TAC). RECENT FINDINGS: We identified 17 articles that met the inclusion criteria via PubMed or Google Scholar. Seven studies (41%) relied on data from US populations. The remaining studies were conducted in China, Taiwan, Ger

Measurement of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) on Indoor Materials: Method Development.

Wildfire smoke penetrates indoors, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoke may accumulate on indoor materials. We developed two approaches for measuring PAHs on common indoor materials: (1) solvent-soaked wiping of solid materials (glass and drywall) and (2) direct extraction of porous/fleecy materials (mechanical air filter media and cotton sheets). Samples are extracted by sonication in dichloromethane and analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Extraction recoveries range from 50-83% for surrogate standards and for PAHs recovered from direct application to isopropan

Fire severity is more sensitive to low fuel moisture content on Calluna heathlands than on peat bogs.

Moorland habitats dominated by the dwarf shrub Calluna vulgaris provide important ecosystem services. Drought is projected to intensify throughout their range, potentially leading to increased fire severity as moisture is a key control on severity. We studied the effect of low fuel moisture content (FMC) on fire severity by using 2×2m rain-out shelters prior to completing 19 experimental fires in two sites in Scotland (UK): a dry heath with thin organic soils and a raised bog with deep, saturated peat, both dominated by Calluna vulgaris. Reduced FMC of the moss and litter (M/L) layer at both s

When the smoke gets in your lungs: short-term effects of Indonesia's 2015 forest fires on health care use.

BACKGROUND: The forest fires that ravaged parts of Indonesia in 2015 were the most severely polluting of this century but little is known about their effects on health care utilization of the affected population. We estimate their short-term impact on visit rates to primary and hospital care with particular focus on visits for specific smoke-related conditions (respiratory disease, acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) and common cold). METHOD: We estimate the short-term impact of the 2015 forest fire on visit rates to primary and hospital care by combining satellite data on Aerosol Optica

Air pollutants and primary liver cancer mortality: a cohort study in crop-burning activities and forest fires area.

INTRODUCTION: Northern Thailand experiences high levels of air pollution in the dry season due to agricultural waste burning and forest fires. Some air pollutants can enter the bloodstream, and the liver has the role of detoxifying these along with other harmful substances. In this study, we assessed the effects of long-term exposure to air pollutants on liver cancer mortality in this area. METHODS: A cohort of 10,859 primary liver cancer patients diagnosed between 2003 and 2018 and followed up to the end of 2020 were included in the study. Extended time-varying covariates of the annually ave

DI-SPME method for the analysis of fire accelerants in simulated fire debris samples using GC/MS and GC×GC/Q-TOFMS.

Climate change has intensified droughts and heatwaves, increasing wildfire frequency and the release of hazardous pollutants that threaten ecosystems, human health, and air quality. Selective and sustainable analytical methodologies are therefore required for forensic and environmental investigations. One of the most common methods for fire debris analysis is headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME); however, this approach is limited in its ability to capture low-volatility analytes, typically lost during combustion. Here, an alternative strategy integrating direct immersion solid-phase

The role of public health interventions in modifying associations between prenatal exposures to ambient air pollution and extreme heat with child health outcomes: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Exposure during pregnancy to ambient air pollution and extreme heat has been linked to adverse birth, respiratory and neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring. Pregnancy is a sensitive developmental period during which such exposures may have lasting impacts on the offspring. However, it is unclear whether public health interventions modify these associations. This review systematically examined this evidence. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Global Health, Maternity and Infant Care, PubMed, CINAHL and EconLit to identify studies indexed from inception

Climate change, environmental exposures, and breast cancer: advancing climate-resilient oncology through sustainable development goal 13.

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a major determinant of human health, yet its implications for breast cancer prevention, progression, and healthcare delivery remain insufficiently integrated into global cancer control strategies. Breast cancer, the most commonly diagnosed malignancy among women worldwide, is influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, hormonal, environmental, and socioeconomic factors, many of which are being reshaped by climate change. This narrative review examines the intersections between climate change, environmental exposures, and breast cancer within the f

Spatiotemporal metabolomics of tobacco leaves in response to Pseudomonas syringae infection.

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a major economic crop and a model for plant-pathogen interactions, yet the spatiotemporal dynamics of defense metabolism during infection remain poorly characterized. Here, we used MALDI-MSI-based spatial metabolomics to systematically profile tobacco leaves during Pseudomonas syringae infection. Multidimensional analysis of 1,399 annotated metabolites revealed distinct spatiotemporal regulation patterns. Temporally, early infection (12 h postinfection (hpi)) was characterized by increased organic acids and terpenoids, followed by a mid-stage shift toward phen

Emissions of climate-altering species from open vegetation fires in the Mediterranean region - A review on methods and data.

The climate change over the Mediterranean region poses serious concerns about the role of open vegetation fires in the emissions of climate-altering species. The aim of this work is to review the current methodologies for quantifying the emissions of greenhouse gases and black carbon from open vegetation fires, as well as the data provided by four state-of-the-art inventories of emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and black carbon (BC) in the Mediterranean region for the period 2003-2020. A limited number of studies specifically addressed the quantification of

Long-term trends in British Columbia lower mainland air quality: Criteria air pollutants and VOC.

The lower mainland of British Columbia is a geographic region that comprises the districts of Metro Vancouver and the Lower Fraser Valley. It is situated in a complex topographical and coastal location in southwestern British Columbia. Metro Vancouver is Canada's third largest population center. Accessing the Canadian National Air Pollution Surveillance Program (NAPS) database we calculated air pollutant statistics using the Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards (CAAQS) averaging times, numerical forms, and numerical levels for the years 2001to 2020. "Nurse-The Archer" Fighting Against the Hidden Enemy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global threat spreading like a wildfire and taking the world by its storm. It has challenged the healthcare delivery systems and disrupted them in a way no one ever imagined before. We at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India received many patients in the COVID critical care unit (CCU) and found a gradual lack of bundle care compliance resulting in an upsurge of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) amid the patients. Evidences suggesting a possible role of Vitamin D in COVID 19: The missing link.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is spreading like wildfire with no specific recommended treatment in sight. While some risk factors such as the presence of comorbidities, old age, and ethnicity have been recognized, not a lot is known about who the virus will strike first or impact more. In this hopeless scenario, exploration of time-tested facts about viral infections, in general, seems to be a sound basis to prop further research upon. The fact that immunity and its various determinants (e.g., micronutrients, sleep, and hygiene) have a crucial role to play in the defense

Machine Learning Predictions of PM2.5 and Their Applications to Exposure and Health Assessment in the CONUS.

Atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is one of the most important risk factors for various respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. We develop a two-phase data-driven framework that uses geostationary Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrievals to predict hourly PM2.5 at 0.01° × 0.01° resolution and support exposure assessment across multiple spatial and temporal contexts. We use a U-Net-like partial convolutional neural network framework inspired by image inpainting to address missing Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data from the GOES-R geostationary satellite. To fill large spatiotemporal gaps
