Bright triplet and bright charge-separated singlet excitons in organic diradicals enable optical read-out and writing of spin states.

Optical control of electron spin states is important for quantum sensing and computing applications, as developed with the diamond nitrogen vacancy centre. This requires electronic excitations, excitons, with net spin. Here we report a molecular diradical where two trityl radical groups are coupled via a meta-linked fluorene bridge. The singlet exciton is at lower energy than the triplet because electron transfer from one of the radical non-bonding orbitals to the other is spin allowed, set by the charging energy for the double occupancy of the non-bonding level, the Hubbard U. Both excitons g

Can a writing intervention using mainstream Assistive Technology software compensate for dysgraphia and support reading comprehension for people with aphasia?

BACKGROUND: Stroke profoundly affects quality of life (QOL), including loss of employment, reduced social activity, shrinking social networks and low mood. Dysgraphia (impaired writing) is a common symptom of aphasia yet is rarely targeted in rehabilitation. Recent technological advances might challenge this, since much communication is now conducted digitally through writing. The rehabilitation of writing may therefore help to address the wider consequences of stroke and aphasia. AIMS: Can assistive technology (AT) training for people with dysgraphia: (1) improve written output, and are gain

Low-Cost Paper Electrode Fabricated by Direct Writing with Silver Nanoparticle-Based Ink for Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide in Wastewater.

A simple, low cost and user-friendly method for the fabrication of paper electrode (PE) using silver nanoparticles capped with octylamine (AgNPs-OA) is reported for detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in wastewater samples. The PE was prepared by direct writing onto the photo paper using a ball-point pen filled with nanoink (10 wt % of AgNPs-OA in chloroform). The prepared electrode was sintered at 100 °C for 1 h to make it conductive. The PE/AgNPs-OA was used as a working electrode in cyclic voltammetry (CV) for the detection of H2O2. The PE/AgNPs-OA exhibited a wide linear calibration rang

EEG-based time and spatial interpretation of activation areas for relaxation and words writing between poor and capable dyslexic children.

Symptoms of dyslexia such as difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, and/or poor spelling as well as decoding abilities, are easily misinterpreted as laziness and defiance amongst school children. Indeed, 37.9% of 699 school dropouts and failures are diagnosed as dyslexic. Currently, Screening for dyslexia relies heavily on therapists, whom are few and subjective, yet objective methods are still unavailable. EEG has long been a popular method to study the cognitive processes in human such as language processing and motor activity. However, its interpretation is limited to ti

Re-writing the natural history of pain and related symptoms in the joint hypermobility syndrome/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypermobility type.

Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypermobility type (EDS-HT) are two clinically overlapping connective tissue disorders characterized by chronic/recurrent pain, joint instability complications, and minor skin changes. Fatigue and headache are also common, although are not yet considered diagnostic criteria. JHS/EDS-HT is a unexpectedly common condition that remains underdiagnosed by most clinicians and pain specialists. This results in interventions limited to symptomatic and non-satisfactory treatments, lacking reasonable pathophysiologic rationale. In this manus

Learning, attention, writing, and processing speed in typical children and children with ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, and oppositional-defiant disorder.

Learning, attention, graphomotor, and processing speed scores were analyzed in 149 typical control children and 886 clinical children with normal intelligence. Nonsignificant differences were found between control children and children with anxiety, depression, and oppositional-defiant disorder. Control children performed better than children with ADHD and autism in all areas. Children with ADHD and autism did not differ, except that children with ADHD had greater learning problems. Attention, graphomotor, and speed weaknesses were likely to coexist, the majority of children with autism and AD

The experiential structure of dialect writing in new media: a mixed-methods study combining qualitative analysis and experimental perception evaluation.

With the proliferation of social media and digital platforms, dialects are increasingly moving beyond traditional oral contexts into networked writing and digital interaction spaces. Compared to standard languages such as Mandarin, dialectal expressions on social media typically carry stronger emotional valence, interactivity, and regionally specific cultural features. However, existing research has mostly addressed digital dialect phenomena from sociolinguistic or cultural semiotic perspectives, and systematic empirical analyses of how users experientially perceive dialectal expressions and h

Time-evolving self-assembly of a single-component fluorophore enables dynamic emission for temporal information encryption and self-erasing writing.

Time-evolving supramolecular systems capable of autonomously generating multiple emissive states represent a comparatively underexplored dimension for optical information processing, with their realization in single-component platforms featuring intrinsic dynamic controllability being particularly challenging. Herein, we report a tris(cyanostyryl)benzene derivative (TCSE) whose time-dependent self-assembly spontaneously produces distinct emissive states, enabling temporal information encryption within a single-component system. In THF/H2O solution, TCSE initially forms blue-emissive metastable

A teacher's lens on student motivation: a three-year longitudinal study of NCS students' Chinese writing motivation in Hong Kong.

Motivation is fundamental to foreign language learning, yet little longitudinal evidence exists on how young multilingual learners' writing motivation evolves over time, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. To address this gap, this 3-year teacher-researcher study tracked 25 non-Chinese speaking (NCS) primary students' Chinese writing motivation from Grade 4 to Grade 6, guided by Self-Determination Theory. The study addressed two questions: (1) How do motivational orientations evolve across technology-enhanced and experiential writing tasks? (2) What classroom conditions support or undermi

Tuning multi-scale pore structures in carbonaceous films via direct ink writing and sacrificial templates for efficient indoor formaldehyde removal.

The primary challenges impeding the extensive application of adsorption for indoor air purification have been low efficiency and effective capacity. To fill the research gap, we developed carbonaceous net-like adsorption films featuring multi-scale porous structures for efficient indoor formaldehyde removal. By optimizing the interfacial mass transfer and internal diffusion, we designed macro- to mesoscale meshes on the film surface and micro- to nano-scale pores within the materials, which were achieved by direct-ink-writing (DIW) printing and sacrificial template methods, respectively. 3D Laser Writing of Low-Loss Cross-Section-Variable Type-I Optical Waveguide Passive/Active Integrated Devices in Single Crystals.

Optical waveguides fabricated in single crystals offer crucial passive/active optical components for photonic integrated circuits. Single crystals possess inherent advantages over their amorphous counterpart, such as lower optical losses in visible-to-mid-infrared band, larger peak emission cross-section, higher doping concentration. However, the writing of Type-I positive refractive index modified waveguides in single crystals using femtosecond laser technology presents significant challenges. Herein, this work introduces a novel femtosecond laser direct writing technique that combines slit-s

Speech-to-text intervention to support text production among students with writing difficulties: a single-case study in nordic countries.

Studies report that speech-to-text applications (STT) may support students with writing difficulties in text production. However, existing research is sparse, shows mixed results, and lacks information on STT interventions and their applicability in schools. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether a systematic and intensive assistive technology intervention focusing on STT can improve text production. A modified multiple-baseline across-subject design was used involving eight middle school students, four Norwegian and four Swedish. Their STT-produced narrative texts were collected d

Association Between Resting-State Functional Connectivity and Reading in Two Writing Systems in Japanese Children With and Without Developmental Dyslexia.

Introduction: Japanese is unique, as it features two distinct writing systems that share the same sound and meaning: syllabic Hiragana and logographic Kanji scripts. Acquired reading difficulties in Hiragana and Kanji have been examined in older patients with brain lesions. However, the precise mechanisms underlying deficits in developmental dyslexia (DD) remain unclear. Materials and Methods: The neural signatures of Japanese children with DD were examined by using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. We examined 22 dyslexic and 46 typically developing (TD) children, aged 7-14

Linguistic changes in expressive writing predict psychological outcomes in women with history of childhood sexual abuse and adult sexual dysfunction.

An expressive writing treatment was recently reported to reduce depressive symptoms and improve sexual function and satisfaction in a sample of female survivors of childhood sexual abuse (Meston, Lorenz, & Stephenson, 2013). We conducted a linguistic analysis of this data to determine whether pre- to posttreatment changes in participants' language use were associated with the improvements in sexuality and depression. Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), a program that counts the use of word categories within a text, was used to evaluate the impact of several word categories, previously as
