Unconditioned- and Conditioned- Stimuli Induce Differential Memory Reconsolidation and β-AR-Dependent CREB Activation.

Consolidated long-term fear memories become labile and reconsolidated upon retrieval by the presentation of conditioned stimulus (CS) or unconditioned stimulus (US). Whether CS-retrieval or US-retrieval will trigger different memory reconsolidation processes is unknown. In this study, we introduced a sequential fear conditioning paradigm in which footshock (FS) was paired with two distinct sounds (CS-A and CS-B). The treatment with propranolol, a β-adrenergic receptor (β-AR) antagonist, after US (FS)-retrieval impaired freezing behavior evoked by either CS-A or CS-B. Betaxolol, a selective β1-

Working-memory endophenotype and dyslexia-associated genetic variant predict dyslexia phenotype.

Developmental dyslexia, a severe impairment of literacy acquisition, is known to have a neurological basis and a strong genetic background. However, effects of individual genetic variations on dyslexia-associated deficits are only moderate and call for the assessment of the genotype's impact on mediating neuro-endophenotypes by the imaging genetics approach. Using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in German participants with and without dyslexia, we investigated gray matter changes and their association with impaired phonological processing, such as reduced verbal working memory. These endophenoty

Intratympanic steroids: do they acutely improve hearing in cases of cochlear hydrops?

OBJECTIVE: To study the acute effects on hearing of intratympanic dexamethasone in patients with cochlear hydrops. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review. METHODS: Patients who met established criteria for the diagnosis of Ménière's disease or had a history of fluctuating hearing loss and met hearing loss criteria for Ménière's disease, indicating cochlear hydrops, underwent a series of one to three intratympanic injections of dexamethasone in the affected ear. Follow-up audiograms were obtained 1 week after each injection and, in many patients, several months after injection. RESULTS: Fifty pa

A preliminary report on the correlation of vestibular Meniére's disease with electrocochleography and glycerol test.

Objective evaluation of vestibular Meniére's disease has been difficult due to the lack of audiometric findings. Thus inevitably, the existence of vestibular Meniére's disease is constantly being challenged. In recent years, electrocochleography (ECochG) has proved to be a useful tool to verify the presence of endolymphatic hydrops electrophysiologically. To further clarify the nature of this disease, we collected 40 patients prospectively who met the following conditions as diagnostic criteria for clinical vestibular Meniére's disease: i) episodic vertigo, ii) aural fullness, and iii) normal

Natural history of sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

This is a prospective in-depth study of patients with sudden idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss. We found that 65% recover completely to functional hearing levels spontaneously and independent of any type of medical treatment. The majority do so within 14 days and many within the first few days. Prognosis can be predicted according to the slope of the initial audiogram (low-frequency losses do better than high-frequency losses), hearing at 8 kHz, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, in some select instances spatial disorientation symptoms, and speech discrimination scores. There was a very poor

Listening effort among adult cochlear implant users: a protocol for a systematic review and measure-specific meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CIs) are the standard of care for profound deafness, yet clinical success is often measured solely by speech recognition scores. These metrics provide an incomplete picture; they indicate what a patient hears but fail to account for the mental workload required to achieve that performance. OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this meta-analysis is to quantitatively compare the magnitude of listening effort in post-lingually deafened adults using cochlear implants (CIs) versus normal-hearing controls. Secondary goals are to: (1) evaluate within-group CI contrasts under

Hypothalamus as a conductor of the migraine prodrome: A narrative review.

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: This narrative review summarizes evidence implicating a role for the hypothalamus in the prodrome phase of a migraine attack. Prodrome is the earliest phase of the migraine attack. Understanding the migraine prodrome could lead to a better description of how migraine attacks are initiated and identification of targets for acute and preventive migraine treatment. The hypothalamus has been implicated in migraine prodrome via (1) localization of common prodrome symptoms to the hypothalamus; (2) identification of neurotransmitters, peptides, and hormones important in migrain

The pupillary respiratory-phase response: pupil size is smallest around inhalation onset and largest during exhalation.

Respiration shapes brain activity and synchronizes sensory and exploratory motor actions, with some evidence suggesting that it also affects pupil size. However, evidence for a coupling between respiration and pupil size remains scarce and inconclusive, hindered by small sample sizes and limited controls. Given the importance of pupil size in visual perception and as a reflection of brain state, understanding its relationship with respiration is essential. In five experiments using a pre-registered protocol, we systematically investigated how respiratory phase affects pupil size across differe

Tinnitus Suppression with Electrical Stimulation at the Most Basal Contact of the Cochlear Implant Electrode as a Model for Round Window Stimulation.

The objective of this research was to test whether efficient tinnitus suppression could be achieved by electrical stimulation of the single most basal electrode contact of a cochlear implant. This approach simulates the effects of electrical stimulation using a round-window electrode. The study was performed in 10 adult cochlear implant patients showing complete or almost complete tinnitus suppression during electrical stimulation with their standard fitting-MAP. In all patients, tinnitus appeared again when the implant was switched off. Five Nucleus implant (1 CI532, 4 CI24RE CA) users and 5

The Efficacy of a Food Supplement in the Treatment of Tinnitus with Comorbid Headache: A Statistical and Machine Learning Analysis with a Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus, the perception of sound without an external auditory stimulus, affects approximately 10-15% of the population and is often associated with significant comorbidities such as headaches. These conditions can severely impact the quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a food supplement in reducing the symptoms of both tinnitus and headache in patients experiencing these conditions concurrently. METHODS: This prospective study included 32 patients (21 males and 11 females) aged between 23 and 68 years (mean age 49.38 years) who were experienci

Cognitive impairment in chronic migraine compared to pseudotumor cerebri.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to define the prevalence of objective cognitive impairment in a group of chronic migraineurs, and to define how migraineurs with cognitive impairment differed from those without impairment, and in doing so to compare cognitive impairment in chronic migraine to another chronic headache-related disorder already associated with cognitive impairment (i.e. pseudotumor cerebri syndrome). OBJECTIVES: Cognitive impairment in migraine, especially chronic migraine, has been too little studied. Only a few studies have been done, demonstrating that cognitive impairment exists in ch

Spread of activation and interaction between channels with multi-channel optogenetic stimulation in the mouse cochlea.

For individuals with severe to profound hearing loss resulting from irreversibly damaged hair cells, cochlear implants can be used to restore hearing by delivering electrical stimulation directly to the spiral ganglion neurons. However, current spread lowers the spatial resolution of neural activation. Since light can be easily confined, optogenetics is a technique that has the potential to improve the precision of neural activation, whereby visible light is used to stimulate neurons that are modified with light-sensitive opsins. This study compares the spread of neural activity across the inf

Hearing screening and amplifier uptake results in a multidisciplinary head and neck cancer survivorship clinic.

PURPOSE: Hearing loss and tinnitus are prevalent among survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC), but auditory issues are under-addressed in the survivorship literature. The purpose of this study was to describe the hearing loss and management experience of a group of survivors provided with a hearing screening and amplifier assistance if needed during their visit. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 1176 individuals seen in the HNC Survivorship Clinic between December 2016 and October 2020 who interacted with audiology was performed. RESULTS: Of these survivors, 72% failed the 30-dB HL h

A Systematic Review on Serious Games in Attention Rehabilitation and Their Effects.

Attention is a basic and main mental task and can play an important role in the functioning of other brain abilities such as intelligence, memory, learning, and perception, and its deficit occurs in 80% of patients with traumatic brain injury. The use of game-based tools for rehabilitation is rapidly expanding. Cognitive rehabilitation via video games is an emerging hot topic in cognitive science. Serious games serve a specific purpose in addition to entertainment. They can be more engaging than exercises since they replace reward and motivation systems with real-world motivations as a complem

The Effects of 30 Minutes of Artificial Gravity on Cognitive and Sensorimotor Performance in a Spaceflight Analog Environment.

The altered vestibular signaling and somatosensory unloading of microgravity result in sensory reweighting and adaptation to conflicting sensory inputs. Aftereffects of these adaptive changes are evident postflight as impairments in behaviors such as balance and gait. Microgravity also induces fluid shifts toward the head and an upward shift of the brain within the skull; these changes are well-replicated in strict head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR), a spaceflight analog environment. Artificial gravity (AG) is a potential countermeasure to mitigate these effects of microgravity. A previous study d

Exposure to Criticism Modulates Left but Not Right Amygdala Functional Connectivity in Healthy Adolescents: Individual Influences of Perceived and Self-Criticism.

Background: Frequent exposure to criticism is a known risk factor for various adult psychiatric disorders. Adolescents may be even more vulnerable to (parental) criticism, as their imbalanced brain maturation makes them prone to stronger mood changes and less effective emotional regulation. Identifying which adolescent subgroups are more vulnerable than others could be of great clinical relevance. Perceived criticism (PC) and self-criticism (SC), two related but distinct traits, could well be crucial vulnerability factors. Hypotheses: After exposure to criticism during fMRI scanning, rapid cha

Investigating the effects of noise exposure on self-report, behavioral and electrophysiological indices of hearing damage in musicians with normal audiometric thresholds.

Musicians are at risk of hearing loss due to prolonged noise exposure, but they may also be at risk of early sub-clinical hearing damage, such as cochlear synaptopathy. In the current study, we investigated the effects of noise exposure on electrophysiological, behavioral and self-report correlates of hearing damage in young adult (age range = 18-27 years) musicians and non-musicians with normal audiometric thresholds. Early-career musicians (n = 76) and non-musicians (n = 47) completed a test battery including the Noise Exposure Structured Interview, pure-tone audiometry (PTA; 0.25-8 kHz), ex

How are results of EEG activation procedures associated with patient perception of seizure provocative factors? A single-center cross-sectional pilot study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between subjectively perceived seizure provocative factors or inhibitors and objectively recorded changes in epileptiform activity (EA) during EEG activation procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Consenting epilepsy patients (≥18 years old) were asked to complete a questionnaire by indicating whether items on a list provoke, inhibit or have no effect on their seizures. A scalp EEG was recorded afterwards to evaluate baseline epileptiform activity and its change (increase/decrease in frequency) during a set of activation procedures

Binaural Pitch Fusion in Children With Normal Hearing, Hearing Aids, and Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Binaural pitch fusion is the perceptual integration of stimuli that evoke different pitches between the ears into a single auditory image. Adults who use hearing aids (HAs) or cochlear implants (CIs) often experience abnormally broad binaural pitch fusion, such that sounds differing in pitch by as much as 3 to 4 octaves are fused across ears, leading to spectral averaging and speech perception interference. The main goal of this study was to measure binaural pitch fusion in children with different hearing device combinations and compare results across groups and with adults. A seco

A selective deficit in imageable concepts: a window to the organization of the conceptual system.

Nissim, a 64 years old Hebrew-speaking man who sustained an ischemic infarct in the left occipital lobe, exhibited an intriguing pattern. He could hold a deep and fluent conversation about abstract and complex issues, such as the social risks in unemployment, but failed to retrieve imageable words such as ball, spoon, carrot, or giraffe. A detailed study of the words he could and could not retrieve, in tasks of picture naming, tactile naming, and naming to definition, indicated that whereas he was able to retrieve abstract words, he had severe difficulties when trying to retrieve imageable wor
