[Ambulatory management of moderately and severely malnourished children in the rural health district of Kapolowe in Shaba (Zaire)].

In Kapalowe rural health district, hospitalisation of malnourished children is restricted to complicated cases; once the complication is under control or eliminated, the child's treatment is continued at home, based on a 13 weeks contract, between parents and health centre. The parents commit themselves to feed their child four times a day (two porridge and two family dish portions), to consult once a week at the health centre and to welcome a weekly home visit. The objective of this visit is to support the parents, to detect possible problems and to reach the roots for this particular child.

[Health care organization and health in a region of Zaire].

Kampene is a roughly 10,000 inhabitants village in Kivu, eastern region of Republic of Zaire. The equatorial rainforest in river Zaire basin surrounds it, far from the main and most crowded roads. Climate is warm and wet, rainfalls constant throughout ten months a years. Eighty seven per cent of the population of Kampene and of its administrative district (around 100,000 inhabitants) work in agriculture. Most of the remainder gets by on mineral search and mining (tin, cassiterite, gold). Health facilities and their organisation should be set up as according to Zaire Health Planning, worked out

Peripheral Administration of isoD7-Aβ Exacerbates Motor Deficits and Tau Pathology in P301S Mice.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder leading to dementia, disability, and premature death. Beta-amyloid (Aβ) and tau pathology are considered key components of its pathogenesis; however, the role of peripheral amyloid load in modulating pre-existing tau pathology remains understudied. We hypothesized that peripheral amyloid load could exacerbate tau pathology through mechanisms potentially linked to the disruption of the Akt/glycogen synthase kinase-3β-associated signaling pathway, which could lead to increased behavioral deficits and progression of

Prevalence estimates of sickle cell disease among children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is a scarcity of data reporting on the burden of sickle cell disease across many African settings, particularly among children, who have the highest risk of preventable morbidity and mortality in the absence of early diagnosis and care. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of sickle cell disease and the absolute number of paediatric cases in sub-Saharan Africa to inform policy and service responses. METHODS: For this systematic review and modelling analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, Global Health (CABI), and African Journals Online (AJOL) for studies published from Jan 1,

Bacteriological Profile of Diabetic Foot Ulcer With Special Reference to Biofilm Formation.

Introduction Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by abnormally high sugar levels in the blood for prolonged periods of time. The world's largest number of diabetics resides in India, making it the world's diabetic capital, with a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) incidence of around 8-17%. Due to the polymicrobial and multidrug resistant (MDR) nature of DFUs, antimicrobial susceptibility testing is of high importance to help treat patients effectively and prevent the development of MDR bacteria. The ability to form biofilms is a significant additive to virulence of an organism that

Genotypic and phenotypic features of MRSA with an incomplete hemolysis phenotype in a tertiary teaching hospital in China.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a common bacterial pathogen responsible for hospital- and community-acquired infections and typically exhibits a β-hemolytic phenotype. Notably, MRSA with an incomplete hemolytic phenotype (SIHP-MRSA) has been reported in few studies and has been shown to display altered virulence and resistance to last-resort antibiotics. However, the detailed genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of SIHP-MRSA clinical isolates remain unclear. This study aims to analyze the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of SIHP-MRSA clinical isola

Luteolin alleviates airway remodeling in asthma by inhibiting the epithelial-mesenchymal transition via β-catenin regulation.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a prevalent long-term inflammatory condition that causes airway inflammation and remodeling. Increasing evidence indicates that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) holds a prominent implication in airway reconstruction in patients with asthma. Flavonoids obtained from Chinese Materia Medica (CMM), such as Luteolin (Lut), exhibit various beneficial effects in various asthma models. Lut has been shown to mitigate various asthma symptoms, including airway inflammation, hyperresponsiveness, bronchoconstriction, excessive mucus production, pulmonary autophagy, and neutroph

Efficacy and safety of acoziborole in patients with human African trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense: a multicentre, open-label, single-arm, phase 2/3 trial.

BACKGROUND: Human African trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense (gambiense HAT) in patients with late-stage disease requires hospital admission to receive nifurtimox-eflornithine combination therapy (NECT). Fexinidazole, the latest treatment that has been recommended by WHO, also requires systematic admission to hospital, which is problematic in areas with few health-care resources. We aim to assess the safety and efficacy of acoziborole in adult and adolescent patients with gambiense HAT. METHODS: This multicentre, prospective, open-label, single-arm, phase 2/3 study recruit

Al amyloidosis.

UNLABELLED: DEFINITION OF THE DISEASE: AL amyloidosis results from extra-cellular deposition of fibril-forming monoclonal immunoglobulin (Ig) light chains (LC) (most commonly of lambda isotype) usually secreted by a small plasma cell clone. Most patients have evidence of isolated monoclonal gammopathy or smoldering myeloma, and the occurrence of AL amyloidosis in patients with symptomatic multiple myeloma or other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders is unusual. The key event in the development of AL amyloidosis is the change in the secondary or tertiary structure of an abnormal monoclonal LC,

Use of ribavirin in viruses other than hepatitis C. A review of the evidence.

Ribavirin is a molecule with antiviral activity against different viruses. In clinical practice, it has made its niche almost exclusively for the treatment of the hepatitisC virus. However, there are other diseases in which it could be of benefit and it has the advantage of being suitable for oral, intravenous and inhaled administration. We conducted a review of the indications of the main drug agencies (Spanish, European and American) and other possible indications, mainly haemorrhagic fevers and coronavirus.

Analysis and insights of cardiac amyloidosis: novel perception of rare diseases in cardiology.

BACKGROUND: Amyloidosis is a rare systemic disease, while cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is nothing more than a chronic disease that causes fatal damage to the structure and function of the heart. The pathogenesis of CA is elusive, the clinical manifestations are diverse and lack of specificity, and the treatment and prognosis of different subtypes vary widely. It is of great practical significance to deepen the understanding of CA. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The clinical data of 39 patients with CA admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University and Fujian Medical University Uni

Safety and efficacy of oral fexinidazole in children with gambiense human African trypanosomiasis: a multicentre, single-arm, open-label, phase 2-3 trial.

BACKGROUND: Fexinidazole has been reported as an effective oral monotherapy against non-severe gambiense human African trypanosomiasis in a recent trial in adults. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of fexinidazole in children across all disease stages of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis. METHODS: We did a multicentre, single-arm, open-label, phase 2-3 trial at eight district hospitals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We recruited children with a Karnofsky score of more than 50, those aged 6 years to younger than 15 years, weighing 20 kg or more, and with confirmed gamb

Low-dose aspirin for the prevention of preterm delivery in nulliparous women with a singleton pregnancy (ASPIRIN): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth remains a common cause of neonatal mortality, with a disproportionately high burden in low-income and middle-income countries. Meta-analyses of low-dose aspirin to prevent pre-eclampsia suggest that the incidence of preterm birth might also be decreased, particularly if initiated before 16 weeks of gestation. METHODS: ASPIRIN was a randomised, multicountry, double-masked, placebo-controlled trial of low-dose aspirin (81 mg daily) initiated between 6 weeks and 0 days of pregnancy, and 13 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy, in nulliparous women with an ultrasound confirming
