CT-derived estimation of cochlear morphology and electrode array position in relation to word recognition in Nucleus-22 recipients.

This study extended the findings of Ketten et al. [Ann. Otol. Rhinol. Laryngol. Suppl. 175:1-16 (1998)] by estimating the three-dimensional (3D) cochlear lengths, electrode array intracochlear insertion depths, and characteristic frequency ranges for 13 more Nucleus-22 implant recipients based on in vivo computed tomography (CT) scans. Array insertion depths were correlated with NU-6 word scores (obtained one year after SPEAK strategy use) by these patients and the 13 who used the SPEAK strategy from the Ketten et al. study. For these 26 patients, the range of cochlear lengths was 29.1-37.4 mm

The brain's orienting response (novelty P3) in patients with unilateral temporal lobe resections.

The brain's orienting response is a biologically primitive, yet critical cognitive function necessary for survival. Though based on a wide network of brain regions, the lateral prefrontal cortex and posterior hippocampus are thought to play essential roles. Indeed, damage to these regions results in abnormalities of the novelty P3 or P3a, an event-related potential (ERP) sign of the orienting response. Like other ubiquitous markers of orienting, such as the galvanic skin response, the P3a habituates when novel events are repeated. Here, we assessed habituation of the P3a in patients who had un

Sex differences in rapid auditory processing deficits in ectopic BXSB/MpJ mice.

Prior research with rodent models, performed predominantly in males, has demonstrated a significant association between focal neocortical malformations (e.g. ectopias and microgyria) and rate-specific auditory processing deficits. In the current study and consistent with prior findings, we report that ectopic male BXSB/MpJ mice exhibit impairments in detecting a two-tone oddball stimulus at short but not long inter-stimulus interval durations when compared to non-ectopic male littermates. However, ectopic female littermates showed no rapid auditory processing deficit when compared to non-ectop

Hearing results in surgery for primary petrous apex lesions.

Hearing preservation is a frequently mentioned phrase in the growing field of skull base surgery. Many authors have attempted to identify prognostic factors for successful hearing preservation, and many have suggested alternative procedures for preserving serviceable hearing. Few have mentioned hearing improvement with skull base surgical procedures. In this article we present the hearing results of 25 surgical procedures for primary petrous apex lesions. These include 13 cholesterol granulomas, 5 cholesteatomas, 4 mucoceles, and 3 eosinophilic granulomas. Surgical approaches included 14 trans

A systematic assessment of safety, tolerability and blinding effectiveness of kilohertz transcranial magnetic perturbation (kTMP).

Objective.Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques are increasingly used to modulate brain activity in basic and translational research. Kilohertz transcranial magnetic perturbation (kTMP) is a recently developed NIBS approach that uses magnetic induction to generate subthreshold electric fields in the brain. kTMP has been shown to modulate cortical excitability while producing no perceptible sensation at the stimulation site. However, its safety and tolerability have not yet been systematically evaluated-a gap this study aims to address.Approach.We conducted sham-controlled experiment

Bi-modal stimulation in the treatment of tinnitus: a study protocol for an exploratory trial to optimise stimulation parameters and patient subtyping.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of a corresponding external acoustic stimulus. Bimodal neuromodulation is emerging as a promising treatment for this condition. The main objectives of this study are to investigate the relevance of interstimulus timing and the choices of acoustic and tongue stimuli for a proprietary bimodal (auditory and somatosensory) neuromodulation device, as well as to explore whether specific subtypes of patients are differentially responsive to this novel intervention for reducing the symptoms of chronic tinnitus. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Thi

Challenges of Cochlear Implant Use for Spatial Hearing in Children and Adolescents With Asymmetric Hearing Including Single Sided Deafness.

This study aimed to determine hearing benefits and challenges for children using cochlear implants (CIs) in one ear and acoustic hearing in the other (bimodal hearing) through hearing aids (HA-CI) or normal hearing (single-sided deafness/SSD-CI). Participants were 34 children with CIs [MAge (SD)=12.2 (3.2) years] and 6 peers with typical hearing/controls [MAge (SD)=13.8 (1.7) years]. Side of better hearing (aural preference) was measured by word recognition in quiet and noise, and spondee-word recognition thresholds in noise co-located/0° or separated (left/right 90°). Effect of Parkinson Disease on Emotion Perception Using the Persian Affective Voices Test.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Emotion perception plays a major role in proper communication with people in different social interactions. Nonverbal affect bursts can be used to evaluate vocal emotion perception. The present study was a preliminary step to establishing the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Montreal Affective Voices (MAV) test, as well as to investigate the effect of Parkinson disease (PD) on vocal emotion perception. METHODS: The short, emotional sound made by pronouncing the vowel "a" in Persian was recorded by 22 actors and actresses to develop the Persian v

Deficit in Central Auditory Processing as a Biomarker of Pre-Clinical Alzheimer's Disease.

Prevention of dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (d/AD) requires interventions that slow the disease process prior to symptom onset. To develop such interventions, one needs metrics that assess pre-symptomatic disease progression. Familiar measures of progression include cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biochemical and imaging analyses, as well as cognitive testing. Changes in the latter can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from effects of "normal" aging. A different approach involves testing of "central auditory processing" (CAP), which enables comprehension of auditory stimuli amidst a distra

Are Vocal Alterations Caused by Smoking in Reinke's Edema in Women Entirely Reversible After Microsurgery and Smoking Cessation?

BACKGROUND: Reinke's edema is a benign lesion of the vocal folds that affects chronic smokers, especially women. The voice becomes hoarse and virilized, and the treatment is microsurgery. However, even after surgery and smoking cessation, many patients remain with a deep and hoarse voice. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to compare pre- and postoperative acoustic and perceptual-auditory vocal analyses of women with Reinke's edema and of women in the control group, who were non-smokers. METHODS: A total of 20 women with videolaryngoscopy diagnosis of Reinke's edema who underwent l

A novel allele of myosin VIIa reveals a critical function for the C-terminal FERM domain for melanosome transport in retinal pigment epithelial cells.

Mutations in the head and tail domains of the motor protein myosin VIIA (MYO7A) cause deaf-blindness (Usher syndrome type 1B, USH1B) and nonsyndromic deafness (DFNB2, DFNA11). The head domain binds to F-actin and serves as the MYO7A motor domain, but little is known about the function of the tail domain. In a genetic screen, we have identified polka mice, which carry a mutation (c.5742 + 5G > A) that affects splicing of the MYO7A transcript and truncates the MYO7A tail domain at the C-terminal FERM domain. In the inner ear, expression of the truncated MYO7A protein is severely reduced, leading

Fitting range of the BAHA Intenso.

Audiometric characteristics of a recently introduced more powerful, behind-the-ear, BAHA sound processor, the BAHA Intenso, were evaluated in 23 patients with contra-indications for using conventional hearing aids. All patients had mixed hearing loss with boneconduction thresholds ranging between 30 and 50 dB HL. Boneconduction gain, defined as the difference in aided free-field detection thresholds and unaided boneconduction thresholds, was calculated at the octave frequencies between 500 Hz and 4 kHz. Median boneconduction gain of the Intenso ranges from 0 dB at 500 ;Hz to 12 ;dB at 2 kHz wi
