Body dissatisfaction is improved but the ideal silhouette is unchanged during weight recovery in anorexia nervosa female inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Public health is a core governmental responsibility, with ministries or departments of health responsible for setting and ensuring adherence to standards, managing performance and instituting reforms as required. Although North Queensland (NQ), Australia has a well-developed health infrastructure, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities in its public health surveillance and response system. Globally, research has highlighted how human and cultural elements ("system software") influence the effectiveness of infrastructure, governance, and data systems ("system hard

Do schema processes mediate links between parenting and eating pathology?

OBJECTIVE: Adverse parenting experiences are commonly linked to eating pathology. A schema-based model of the development and maintenance of eating pathology proposes that one of the potential mediators of the link between parenting and eating pathology might be the development of schema maintenance processes--mechanisms that operate to help the individual avoid intolerable emotions. METHOD: To test this hypothesis, 353 female students and 124 female eating-disordered clients were recruited. They completed a measure of perceived parenting experiences as related to schema development (Young Pa

Let eating disorder patients decide: Providing choice may reduce early drop-out from inpatient treatment.

Premature drop-out from treatment is a highly prevalent phenomenon among eating disorder (ED) patients. In a specialized inpatient treatment unit a major change was made in the admission strategy in 2001, giving a maximum of personal choice to the patients. A quasi-experimental research was carried out comparing 87 patients treated till 2000 ('old' strategy) with 87 patients treated from 2001 on ('new' strategy). The results indicate that the provision of choice at the beginning of treatment significantly reduced drop-out during the first weeks of inpatient treatment. No differences between bo

Binge eating is associated with right orbitofrontal-insular-striatal atrophy in frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Neurophysiologic studies on human and nonhuman primates implicate an orbitofrontal-insular-striatal circuit in high-level regulation of feeding. However, the role of these areas in determining feeding disturbances in neurologic patients remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: To determine brain structures critical for control of eating behavior, we performed a prospective, laboratory-based, free-feeding study of 18 healthy control subjects and 32 patients with neurodegenerative disease. MR voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to identify regions of significant atrophy in patie

Risk of schizophrenia among people with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A nationwide population-based cohort study.

High comorbidity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been reported in patients with schizophrenia. The sequence of OCD and schizophrenia onset might clarify the underlying pathophysiological relationships between these two disorders, but available evidence is limited. In this study, we used a population-based cohort to investigate the risk of schizophrenia in people with newly diagnosed OCD. Patients who were first diagnosed with OCD from 2000 to 2013 were selected from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Research Database. The non-OCD group was randomly sampled, and matched with the OCD

Cost-effectiveness of guided self-help treatment for recurrent binge eating.

OBJECTIVE: Adoption of effective treatments for recurrent binge-eating disorders depends on the balance of costs and benefits. Using data from a recent randomized controlled trial, we conducted an incremental cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) of a cognitive-behavioral therapy guided self-help intervention (CBT-GSH) to treat recurrent binge eating compared to treatment as usual (TAU). METHOD: Participants were 123 adult members of an HMO (mean age = 37.2 years, 91.9% female, 96.7% non-Hispanic White) who met criteria for eating disorders involving binge eating as measured by the Eating Disorde

Body dissatisfaction, ethnic identity, and disordered eating among African American women.

Initial research suggested that only European American women developed eating disorders (Garner, 1993), yet recent studies have shown that African American women do experience them (e.g., Lester & Petrie, 1998b; Mulholland & Mintz, 2001) and also may be negatively affected by similar sociocultural variables. In this study, we examined a sociocultural model of eating disorders for African American women but included the influences of ethnic identity (e.g., Hall, 1995; Helms, 1990). Participants (N = 322) were drawn from 5 different universities. They completed measures representing ethnic ident

Remission of eating disorder during pregnancy: five cases and brief clinical review.

Eating disorder during pregnancy is associated with a diversity of adverse outcomes and is of potential danger to both mother and child. There is, however, a tendency for remission of the eating disorder during pregnancy with improvement of symptoms such as restrictive dieting, binging and purging, and some women actually manage to put the disease behind them. This case report describes five women with different eating disorders and focuses on the symptomatology during pregnancy and in the months postpartum. The discussion deals with the possible psychological, social and endocrinological reas

Efficacy of sibutramine for the treatment of binge eating disorder: a randomized multicenter placebo-controlled double-blind study.

OBJECTIVE: Preliminary evidence suggests that the antiobesity agent sibutramine is effective in the treatment of binge eating disorder, impacting both binge eating and weight. This study is the first large-scale, multisite, placebo-controlled trial to test the efficacy of sibutramine in binge eating disorder. METHOD: Participants (N=304) who met DSM-IV criteria for binge eating disorder were randomly assigned to 24 weeks of double-blind sibutramine (15 mg) or placebo treatment. The outcome measures included the frequency of eating binges (primary outcome), binge day frequency, body mass index

Acute methylphenidate treatments reduce sucrose intake in restricted-fed bingeing rats.

Recent evidence suggests that methylphenidate HCl may be effective at limiting the frequency and the amount of binge eating. The present study investigated if daily treatments with methylphenidate reduced the bingeing-like behavior observed in restricted-fed adult male rats. Three groups (n = 6) received peripheral injections of methylphenidate in doses of 1.5 or 0.75 mg/kg/day, or saline, 3 days prior and 7 days during a previously characterized intermittent feeding regimen that results in a gradual increase of sucrose and food intake. The higher, but not the lower, dose of methylphenidate re

Artificially Sweetened Beverages Beyond the Metabolic Risks: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

We carried out a review of the available literature on the effects that artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) such as diet soda (DS) have on health, particularly those not related to incident diabetes mellitus, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. A search of scientific articles was carried out using 11 different databases: PubMed, Cochrane, LILACS, MEDLINE Ovid, JAMA Network, IBECS, Cumed, Scopus, SciELO, MEDLINE-EBSCO, and Taylor & Francis Online. Articles published in the last 10 years were considered, considering cross-sectional studies, retrospective or prospective cohort studies, case-cont

Virtual Reality-Based Avatar Intervention for Eating Disorders: Mixed Methods Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing interest in developing novel psychological interventions for eating disorders, with an emphasis on targeting maintaining factors. One hypothesized mechanism underlying illness maintenance is the experience of an "inner eating disorder voice," which reinforces maladaptive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Preliminary studies suggest that the eating disorder voice is common among patients and is linked to greater illness severity. OBJECTIVE: This single-arm, mixed methods pilot feasibility study aimed to evaluate a novel virtual reality (VR)-based therapy targeti
