[Q-ACP: a questionnaire for evaluating visual and gestural complaints in patients with posterior cortical atrophy].

INTRODUCTION: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a clinical neurodegenerative syndrome associated with atrophy in parieto-occipital cortices, and characterized by prominent disorders of higher visual processing, affecting both dorsal and ventral streams. METHODS: We used a questionnaire (Q-ACP) specifically designed to assess visual and praxis dysfunctions in PCA. The Q-ACP contains 32 items (combined in 12 domains) aimed at describing everyday deficiencies that patients or caregivers notice about visual and gestural domains. It was administered to 34 patients with PCA (MMSE = 20.0 ± 5.1) wh

[Dystypia after ischemic stroke: a disturbance of linguistic processing for Romaji (Romanized Japanese)?].

"Dystypia", characterized by an impairment of typing on a keyboard, is a unique neurobehavioral syndrome. A 77-year-old right-handed woman developed a relatively selective impairment of typing after ischemic stroke. The MRI documented new scattered ischemic lesions in the middle cerebral artery territory of the left hemisphere and an old infarct lesion in the frontal area of the right hemisphere. The standard neuropsychological tests showed no aphasia, normal praxis, intact visuospatial ability, and a mild visual memory disturbance. The detailed analysis documented severe impairment of writing

Handwriting characteristics among secondary students with and without physical disabilities: a study with a computerized tool.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the handwriting characteristics of secondary school students with and without physical disabilities (PD). With the use of a computerized Chinese Handwriting Assessment Tool (CHAT), it was made possible to objectively assess and analyze in detail the handwriting characteristics of individual students. Fifty participants (age range: 15-19-years-old) were recruited from one mainstream secondary school and 20 participants (age range: 17-24-years-old) were recruited from two secondary schools for students with PD. They were asked to perform three

Promoting linguistic complexity, greater message length and ease of engagement in email writing in people with aphasia: initial evidence from a study utilizing assistive writing software.

BACKGROUND: Improving email writing in people with aphasia could enhance their ability to communicate, promote interaction and reduce isolation. Spelling therapies have been effective in improving single-word writing. However, there has been limited evidence on how to achieve changes to everyday writing tasks such as email writing in people with aphasia. One potential area that has been largely unexplored in the literature is the potential use of assistive writing technologies, despite some initial evidence that assistive writing software use can lead to qualitative and quantitative improvemen

Inflectional spelling deficits in developmental dyslexia.

The goal of this study was to examine past-tense spelling deficits in developmental dyslexia and their relationship to phonological abilities, spoken morphological awareness and word specific orthographic memory. Three groups of children (28 9-year-old dyslexic, 28 chronological age-matched and 28 reading/spelling age-matched children) completed a battery of tests including spelling regularly inflected words (e.g., kissed) and matched one-morpheme words (e.g., wrist). They were also assessed on a range of tests of reading and spelling abilities and associated linguistic measures. Dyslexic chil

Cooccurrence of problems in activity level, attention, psychosocial adjustment, reading and writing in children with developmental coordination disorder.

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the cooccurrence of problems in activity level, attention, reading, writing and psychosocial adjustment of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). A parent-report questionnaire, the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire - Chinese version (DCDQ-C), was used to screen first to third graders from 13 mainstream schools in Taipei. Two standardized motor tests were then administered to those who scored below 10% on the DCDQ-C. Tests of activity level, attention, reading, writing and psychosocial adjustment were then administer

Naturalistic action impairments in dementia.

Naturalistic actions are everyday tasks (e.g. cooking) that require one to use multiple objects and sequence steps to achieve a goal. Naturalistic action impairment has been attributed to executive dysfunction [Higher cortical functions in man. New York: Basic Books, 1966], semantic knowledge degradation [Brain 111 (1988) 1173], and, more recently, general limitations in cognitive resources [Neuropsychology 12 (1998) 13]. Action impairments were explored in 51 dementia participants with the short form of the multi-level action test (MLAT-S). A clinical neuropsychological test protocol was also

Cognitive neuropsychological analysis and neuroanatomic correlates in a case of acute anomia.

We describe an analysis of lexical processing performed in a patient with the acute onset of an isolated anomia. Based on a model of lexical processing, we evaluated hypotheses as to the source of the naming deficit. We observed impairments in oral and written picture naming and oral naming to definition with relatively intact semantic processing across input modalities, suggesting that output from the semantic system was impaired. In contrast to previous reports, we propose that this pattern represents an impairment that arises late in semantic processing prior to accessing mode-specific verb

The compositionality of lexical semantic representations: clues from semantic errors in object naming.

We present evidence that semantic errors in object naming can arise not only from impairment to the semantic system but also from damage to input and output processes. Although each of these levels of disruption can result in similar types of semantic errors in object naming, they have different types of consequences for performance on other lexical tasks, such as comprehension and naming to definition. We show that the analysis of the co-occurrence of semantic errors in naming with different patterns of performance in other lexical processing tasks can be used to localise the source of semant

Language-specific dysgraphia in Korean stroke patients.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated how changes in the writing of 14 Korean stroke patients reflect the unique features of the Korean writing system. BACKGROUND: The Korean writing system, Han-geul, has both linguistic and visuospatial/constructive characteristics. In the visuospatial construction of a syllable, the component consonant(s) and vowel(s) must be arranged from top-to-bottom and/or left-to-right within the form of a square. This syllabic organization, unique to Korean writing, may distinguish dysgraphia in Korean patients from the disorder in other languages, and reveal the effects of str

Longitudinal effects of Alzheimer disease on discourse production.

As part of a 5-year study of the longitudinal effects of Alzheimer disease (AD) on language, discourse samples from three patients diagnosed with AD and three matched normal controls were analyzed. A picture-description task was used to elicit comparable samples of discourse. Subjects were asked to describe the "Easter Morning" picture by Norman Rockwell. Samples were tape recorded, transcribed, and scored using eight measures of discourse production. These measures successfully quantified the changes in quantity and quality observed in the discourse of AD patients over time. Results revealed

Ideomotor apraxia without aphasia and aphasia without apraxia: the anatomical support for a double dissociation.

This study aimed to verify the existence of a double aphasia/apraxia dissociation. Apraxic patients without aphasia and aphasic patients without apraxia were included in a consecutive series of patients with cortical or subcortical CT documented vascular lesions in the left hemisphere. Of 699 patients, 10 were found to be apraxic but not aphasic and 149 aphasic but not apraxic. These findings indicate an aphasia/apraxia double dissociation. This suggests that praxis and language make use of two different, partly overlapping networks.

[Early diagnosis of herpes simplex virus encephalitis by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in patients with normal MRI].

Since treatment of herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE) is most effective when started early, a sensitive and specific method for early diagnosis would be of great benefit. MRI and CT are commonly used for this purpose. In this study, we presented two patients who had serologically confirmed HSVE and had normal CT and MRI, but were diagnosed as having HSVE by means of SPECT in the early stage. Case 1 was a 56-year-old man who suddenly developed alexia. On admission, physical and neurological examination were unremarkable except for alexia, agraphia, acalculia, and left-right disorientation

A connectivity model of the anatomic substrates underlying Gerstmann syndrome.

The Gerstmann syndrome is a constellation of neurological deficits that include agraphia, acalculia, left-right discrimination and finger agnosia. Despite a growing interest in this clinical phenomenon, there remains controversy regarding the specific neuroanatomic substrates involved. Advancements in data-driven, computational modelling provides an opportunity to create a unified cortical model with greater anatomic precision based on underlying structural and functional connectivity across complex cognitive domains. A literature search was conducted for healthy task-based functional MRI and

Writing errors and anosognosia in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with dementia.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with dementia (ALS-D) is known to exhibit characteristics of frontotemporal dementia. However, in clinical situations, it is often difficult to evaluate their cognitive functions because of impaired voluntary speech and physical disabilities. In order to identify characteristic and diagnostic cognitive symptoms of relatively advanced ALS-D patients, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical features of seven cases of clinically definitive ALS who had dementia, impaired voluntary speech, and physical disability. Their medical records showed that six out of sev

Traumatic aphasia in children and adults: a comparison of clinical features and evolution.

We compared the performance on test of language, apraxia, acalculia and intelligence of 32 children--age 5 to 16 years--and 31 adults, seen at our Aphasia Unit for the sequelae of a brain trauma. Logorrhea was never present among children who had nonfluent aphasia more frequently than adults. Apraxia and acalculia were equally present in the two groups. Twelve children and 15 adults of the first study were retested at variable distance from trauma. No group difference was found in the recovery of auditory comprehension (Token Test) or oral expression (oral confrontation naming and telling-of-a

Multiple patterns of writing disorders in dementia of the Alzheimer type and their evolution.

This paper reports the results obtained from a writing task given to 23 Italian patients suffering from mild to moderate dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT). Spelling performance was tested with a task that taps the sub-word-level (spelling of regular words and nonwords), and the lexical route (spelling of regular and irregular words), in line with contemporary models of writing. Each patient's performance was classified according to the emergence of dissociated patterns of damage between regular words and nonwords and between regular and irregular words. The 23 DAT patients span the whole
