Outcomes of Cataract Surgery at a Referral Center.

PURPOSE: To report the outcomes of cataract surgery at a large referral eye hospital and to identify factors associated with less than excellent visual outcomes. METHODS: Hospital records of patients, who had undergone age-related cataract extraction (1,285 procedures) within a two-year period were sampled randomly for 353 patients (405 eyes) and baseline characteristics were recorded. Up to three causes of visual loss (contributory reasons) were considered and the principal cause of "less than excellent outcome," i.e., best spectacle corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) <20/25 was defined as the

Pediatric IOL implantation: the KKESH experience.

BACKGROUND: Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is increasingly accepted as a means of correcting pediatric aphakia. However, few large series have been reported. We present our experience over the past 6 years. METHODS: Charts were reviewed of 84 patients (88 eyes) 8 years old or younger who underwent IOL implantation at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital between January 1989 and March 1995. An attempt was made to correlate visual outcome with patient variables, and refractive outcome was assessed. RESULTS: Despite a high percentage of patients with penetrating trauma (24%) and a significa

Artificial Intelligence in Ocular Transcriptomics: Applications of Unsupervised and Supervised Learning.

Transcriptomic profiling is a powerful tool for dissecting the cellular and molecular complexity of ocular tissues, providing insights into retinal development, corneal disease, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. With the expansion of microarray, bulk RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), and single-cell RNA-seq technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a key strategy for analyzing high-dimensional gene expression data. This review synthesizes AI-enabled transcriptomic studies in ophthalmology from 2019 to 2025, highlighting how supervised and unsupervised machine learning (ML) methods ha

Research Progress Concerning a Novel Intraocular Lens for the Prevention of Posterior Capsular Opacification.

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is the most common complication resulting from cataract surgery and limits the long-term postoperative visual outcome. Using Nd:YAG laser-assisted posterior capsulotomy for the clinical treatment of symptomatic PCO increases the risks of complications, such as glaucoma, retinal diseases, uveitis, and intraocular lens (IOL) pitting. Therefore, finding how to prevent PCO development is the subject of active investigations. As a replacement organ, the IOL is implanted into the lens capsule after cataract surgery, but it is also associated with the occurrence

Recent developments in the management of congenital cataract.

Congenital cataract is a rare eye disease, one of the leading treatable causes of low vision in children worldwide. Hereditary cataracts can be divided in syndromic and non-syndromic cataracts. Early diagnosis in congenital cataracts is key to reach good visual function. Current surgical techniques, that combine microincision cataract extraction and primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, have improved childhood cataract outcome. Complications include posterior capsule opacification (PCO), aphakic or pseudophakic glaucoma, uveitis, pupil displacement and IOL decentration. A recent study u

Sterically blocking adhesion of cells to biological surfaces with a surface-active copolymer containing poly(ethylene glycol) and phenylboronic acid.

Graft copolymers were designed that could spontaneously bind to biological surfaces and block subsequent recognition and adhesion at those surfaces. Phenylboronic acid (PBA) moieties in the polymer backbone provided binding to surfaces, forming reversible covalent complexes with cis-diols found in many biological molecules. Pendant poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) side chains sterically protected those surfaces from subsequent interactions with other proteins and cells. The PEG and PBA grafting ratios on these poly-L-lysine-graft-(PEG;PBA) copolymers [PLL-g-(PEG;PBA)] were varied, and the polymers

[Diagnostic errors when referring patients for cataract surgery].

AIM: To study the frequency of patients with macular pathology being wrongly diagnosed with cataract and possible reasons for this to occur. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 1390 patients (1390 eyes), in whom cataract turned out to be not the main cause of visual impairment, were recruited as research subjects. To reveal the reasons for misdiagnosis, we resorted to methods of ophthalmic examination that are available at ambulatory care facilities, i.e. visual acuity measurement, slit lamp biomicroscopy of the anterior and posterior eye segments, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy. RESULTS: I

Current and future concepts of the design of the intraocular lens.

Anterior chamber lenses are currently much less popular than posterior chamber lenses. They are mainly used in conjunction with intracapsular cataract extraction, as a secondary lens implant, and as a back up lens in case of intraoperative complications of extracapsular cataract extraction. A major disadvantage of anterior chamber lenses is improper sizing. Rigid lenses cause the greatest ocular tenderness and present serious problems with errors in sizing but they are the easiest to explant. Semiflexible and flexible lenses show a greater tendency to develop peripheral anterior synechiae. Thi

Methotrexate in ocular manifestations of Behcet's disease: a longitudinal study up to 15 years.

BACKGROUND: Ocular manifestations of Behcet's disease (BD) need aggressive treatment to prevent severe loss of vision or blindness. Cytotoxic drugs are the main therapeutic agents and the first line treatment. Methotrexate is the least toxic, used mainly for posterior uveitis. We present here the outcome of eye lesions with methotrexate and prednisolone, in a longitudinal study of up to 15 years, on 682 patients (5447 eye-years of follow-up). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Methotrexate was started at 7.5-15 mg/week. Prednisolone was added at 0.5 mg/kg/daily, then adjusted as needed. INCLUSION CRITERI

[Results and complications of surgery of congenital cataract].

Results of surgery for congenital cataract were studied according to age of implantation, type and polarity. Each forms combined, visual acuity in logMAR is divided by a median of 0.45 (5/10) in bilateral cataracts and 0.7 (2/10) in the unilateral. The precocity of the surgery allows a better prognosis, but exposes to more complications, especially glaucoma. Complications as inflammatory diseases, glaucoma, capsular opacification, refractive error, residual myopic shift, and retinal complications are discussed.
