Background/Objectives: Total scapulectomy for malignant scapular tumors remains a major reconstructive challenge because resection removes the osseous framework, muscular insertions, and biomechanical support required for shoulder function. Patient-specific three-dimensional (3D)-printed implants may improve anatomical reconstruction, but the indications and surgical principles underlying successful total scapular replacement remain poorly defined. Methods: This retrospective single-center case series included the first three consecutive patients who underwent total scapulectomy followed by im

BACKGROUND: Whether or how the position of the humeral tray (inlay or onlay) in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) affects outcomes is unclear. Our goal was to compare the clinical and radiographic results of RSA systems with inlay vs. onlay designs but with similar neck shaft angles (NSAs) and lateralized glenospheres.
METHODS: We screened the institutional database at our tertiary academic center for patients who underwent primary RSA (with a lateralized glenosphere and a 135° NSA) from 2009 through 2017. The indication for surgery was glenohumeral osteoarthritis with glenoid bone loss (Wa

PURPOSE: Covered stent grafts (SGs) are currently being used in a wide variety of situations to maintain function and patency of hemodialysis access circuits. Stent grafts are rarely placed across the elbow joint (EJ), however, due to fear of stent fracture. This study reports on the experience and patency rates with SGs across the EJ.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April 2020 to August 2023, all procedures with SGs placed across the EJ were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 21 patients with SGs placed across the EJ were included in the study. The Covera Vascular Covered Stent (BD, Franklin L

BACKGROUND: Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) with second-generation Trabecular Metal™ implants (Zimmer, Warsaw, IN, USA) has shown good short-term outcomes. Differences in outcomes between cemented and uncemented fixation are unknown. This study compared the clinical, radiographic, and patient-rated outcomes of TSA with cemented vs. uncemented TM glenoids at minimum 5-year follow-up.
METHODS: Patients who underwent anatomic TSA with second-generation TM glenoid components for primary osteoarthritis were identified for minimum 5-year follow-up. The patients were divided into 2 groups: cemente

UNLABELLED: This study aims to describe the first clinical results in the treatment of dislocated olecranon fractures with 2.2-mm, fine-threaded wires with a washer. Furthermore, in the second part of the article, the stability of these new implants has been compared to standard tension band wiring in a sawbone model.
PATIENTS: The radiological and clinical outcomes in 24 patients (mean age: 53.6 years) with 24 isolated Mayo type I and II fractures of the olecranon were evaluated in a prospective study after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with a new fixation device (FFS; Orthofix

Radial head and neck fractures are one of the most common elbow fractures, comprising 2% to 5% of all fractures, and 30% of elbow fractures. Although uncomplicated Mason type I fractures can be managed nonsurgically, Mason type II-IV fractures require additional intervention. Mason type II-III fractures with 3 or fewer fragments are typically treated with open reduction and internal fixation using 2 to 3 lag screws. Transverse radial neck involvement or axial instability with screw-only fixation has historically required the additional use of a mini fragment T-plate or locking proximal radius

Fourteen patients in whom open reduction and internal fixation could not be achieved satisfactorily had a total elbow arthroplasty for non-union of a supracondylar humeral fracture. All patients had an established non-union, and ten had had from one to four previous attempts at internal fixation. The average age at the time of operation was sixty-five years. The average duration of follow-up was five years, with a minimum of two years. The average preoperative elbow score was 17 points, with both pain and functional disability present. The average postoperative score was 84 points; there were

We retrospectively reviewed the results of primary total elbow arthroplasty for the treatment of an acute fracture of the distal aspect of the humerus in twenty consecutive patients (twenty-one elbows) who had a mean age of seventy-two years (range, forty-eight to ninety-two years) at the time of the injury. The patients were managed between November 1982 and October 1992. The presence of rheumatoid arthritis in nine patients (ten elbows) influenced the choice of treatment. The mean interval between the injury and the total elbow arthroplasty was seven days (range, one to twenty-five days). Th

There is little information about the management of peri-prosthetic fracture of the humerus after total shoulder replacement (TSR). This is a retrospective review of 22 patients who underwent a revision of their original shoulder replacement for peri-prosthetic fracture of the humerus with bone loss and/or loose components. There were 20 women and two men with a mean age of 75 years (61 to 90) and a mean follow-up 42 months (12 to 91): 16 of these had undergone a previous revision TSR. Of the 22 patients, 12 were treated with a long-stemmed humeral component that bypassed the fracture. All the

BACKGROUND: Blunt trauma causing brachial artery injury in a young patient is very rare. Cases of brachial artery injury may be associated with closed elbow dislocation or instability. Elbow dislocation may not be evident clinically and radiologically on initial presentation.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case of a 37-year-old, right-hand dominant, Malay man who fell approximately 6 meters from a rambutan tree and his left arm hit the tree trunk on his way down. He was an active tobacco smoker with a 20 pack year smoking history. On clinical examination, Doppler signals over his radial and uln

The open distal humeral fracture associated with the major loss of the articular surface and bony structure is a challenging problem for orthopedic surgeons. In this case report, we describe a case of complete missing lateral column of the distal humerus with severe articular destruction of capitellum and lateral trochlear ridge which was treated with the patient-specific implant created with three-dimensional printing technology. Apart from anatomic replacement of the articular surface, the lateral collateral ligament complex and extensor muscle which are the key soft tissue stabilizers of el

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively review the results of Coonrad-Morrey semi-constrained total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) for the treatment of different elbow disorders.
METHODS: Between December 2003 and April 2008, 30 patients with different kinds of elbow disorders including elbow fracture, non-healing elbow fracture, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis were treated with TEA using the semi-constrained Coonrad-Morrey elbow replacement prostheses. One patient had bilateral total elbow replacements. There were 22 females and 8 males, with a mean age of 66 years (47 to 78).
RESULTS: Twenty patie

Although elbow dislocations are common orthopaedic lesions, vascular complications remain rare. We report the cases of three patients who presented with a rupture of the brachial artery after closed posterior dislocation, which is even more uncommon. Arteriograms were performed in all cases because of the persistent absence of pulses at the wrist after emergency reduction. In each patient, the treatment consisted of the insertion of reversed end-to-end saphenous bridges. None of them presented mid-term vascular complications (mean follow-up, 17 months). Brachial artery disruption can result fr

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) is a well-established replacement strategy to treat irreparable massive rotator cuff tears and cuff tear arthropathy. In patients with forward (FF) deficits combined with a loss of external rotation (ER), RSA with latissimus dorsi transfer (LDT), which was initially used for brachial plexopathies, has been addressed to restore both functional deficits. The aim of the study is to assess mid-term clinical and radiological outcomes of concomitant RSA with LDT in patients with significant preoperative external rotation lag greater than 30 degr

In recent years, myoelectric interfaces using surface electromyogram (EMG) signals have been developed for assisting people with physical disabilities. Especially, in the myoelectric interfaces for robotic hands or arms, decoding the user's upper-limb movement intentions is cardinal to properly control the prosthesis. However, because previous experiments were implemented with only healthy subjects, the possibility of classifying reaching-to-grasping based on the EMG signals from the residual limb without the below-elbow muscles was not investigated yet. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the

PURPOSE: Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) is a viable treatment for complex radial head fracture. Whereas elbow stability and function is typically restored at short- to mid-term follow-up, the outcome in higher-demand populations is not well defined. We sought to characterize the functional and occupational outcomes following RHA in an active duty military population with intense upper extremity demands.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all U.S. military service members undergoing primary RHA from 2010 and 2013 with a minimum of 2-year follow-up. Patient-based, injury-relate

Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a relatively uncommon cause of glenohumeral arthritis. Previous retrospective reviews of shoulder arthroplasty for AVN have shown very good results in small numbers of patients. This study prospectively evaluated a consecutive series of 21 shoulders in 19 patients treated with the same modular prosthesis at a single institution. Of the shoulders, 8 developed AVN after a proximal humeral fracture, 1 was associated with a massive rotator cuff tear, 10 developed after corticosteroid therapy, and 2 were idiopathic. The patients, 14 women and 5 men, with a mean age of 54

BACKGROUND: Stemless reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) was developed to preserve humeral bone stock and facilitate revision surgery. While short-term outcomes are promising, mid-term data beyond five years remain limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical and radiographic outcomes at a minimum follow-up of five years after implantation of a stemless reverse shoulder prosthesis. We hypothesized that metaphyseal fixation would demonstrate sustained clinical function and stable radiographic integration at mid-term follow-up.
METHODS: This retrospective case series inclu
