INTRODUCTION: The main goal of this study was to assess the feasibility of a head-mounted display (HMD) providing telemedicine neurosurgical support during a decompressive craniectomy by a military surgeon who is isolated from readily available neurosurgical care. The secondary aim was to assess the usability perceived by the military surgeon and to evaluate technical aspects of the head-mounted display.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: After a standard concise lecture, 10 military surgeons performed a decompressive craniectomy on a AnubiFiX-embalmed post-mortem human head. Seven military surgeons used

BACKGROUND: Aesthetic neuromodulator injections of the upper face are frequently performed to temporarily block muscular actions of the periorbital muscles to ultimately reduce skin rhytids. However, the adverse event rate in the literature for toxin-induced blepharoptosis ranges from 0.51% to 5.4%.
OBJECTIVE: To identify access pathways by which injected neuromodulator product can travel from extra- to intra-orbital and therefore affect the levator palpebrae superioris muscle.
METHODS: Nine non-embalmed human body donors were investigated in this study with a mean age at death of 72.8 (16.1

Background Silicone dye injection is a well-described technique for studying vascular anatomy. Plastic surgeons routinely participate in cadaveric workshops and are involved in the preparation of vascular-labeled cadavers. However, sparse literature is available on dye studies of extracranial head and neck vessels, even with anatomists, and the preparation of these cadavers is a daunting task. Materials and Methods In this study, we describe a straightforward technique of silicone dye injection for extracranial head and neck vasculature and its application for filler injection training and o

BACKGROUND: We compared the spread of an injectate into the thoracic sympathetic chain resulting from a single-injection intertransverse process (ITP) block with that of a single-injection PV block at the T2 level.
METHODS: Sixteen soft-embalmed cadavers were used. The right hemithorax was randomly allocated to receive either an ultrasound-guided single-injection ITP block or ultrasound-guided single-injection PV block at the T2 vertebral level, with the opposite block administered to the other side. Approximately 10 mL of latex dye solution was injected into each hemithorax using a random al

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive endoscopic approaches in cranial base surgery have been developing in the past decades. The transorbital (TO) route is one promising alternative, yet its adequacy for intracranial vascular lesions remains unclear. The present anatomic work aimed to test the feasibility and to provide a qualitative description of the endoscopic TO approach for the anterior circulation, namely the internal carotid artery and the middle cerebral artery.
METHODS: Seven embalmed adult cadaveric specimens (12 sides) were used in the study. Each side was approached in 3

BACKGROUND: The exact anatomical entity behind the term superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) remains poorly understood. The different interpretations of the term SMAS by anatomists, surgeons, and histologists have caused confusion. This article aims to provide clarity regarding this term and the relevant anatomy.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted to uncover the variety of descriptions of the term SMAS. A feasibility study, followed by a conclusive series of standardized layered dissections complemented by histologic analysis and sheet plastination, was performed on 50 cadaver

BACKGROUND: The ultrasonic aspirator micro claw tool (UAmCT) can be used to remove the bone of the internal auditory canal (IAC) during vestibular schwannoma resection via the retrosigmoid approach (RSA) without the risk of a spinning drill shaft. However, the thermal profile of the UAmCT during IAC removal has not been reported.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the thermal profile of the UAmCT during access of the IAC to that of a conventional high-speed drill (HSD) and to present an illustrative case of this application.
METHODS: IAC opening via RSA was performed in 5 embalmed cadaveric specimens usi

OBJECTIVE: A recent spurt in incidence of meralgia paresthetica to 0.1-81% due to minimally invasive anterior approach to hip joint has resulted in reinterest in anatomy of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). Familiarity with variations in the course of LFCN will reduce the morbidity associated with orthopedic procedures around the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and inguinal ligament (IL).
METHODS: Twenty five adult human formalin embalmed cadavers were dissected. Course and relations of nerve to ASIS, IL and sartorius muscle was noted, distance of nerve from ASIS at IL was measured

PURPOSE: This report describes a bilateral persistent median artery (PMA) originating from the ulnar artery and terminating at different levels of the upper limb. The PMA coexisted with a bilateral bifid median nerve (MN) and two bilateral interconnections (ICs characterized with the symbol -) of the MN with the ulnar nerve (UN) (MN-UN) and a unilateral reverse IC (UN-MN). Emphasis was given to the artery's developmental background.
METHODS: The PMA was identified in an 80-year-old formalin-embalmed donated male cadaver.
RESULTS: The right-sided PMA terminated at the wrist, posterior to the

PURPOSE: The tarsal tunnel (TT) is a fibro-osseous anatomical space coursing from the medial ankle to the medial midfoot. This tunnel acts as a passage for both tendinous and neurovascular structures, including the neurovascular bundle containing the posterior tibial artery (PTA), posterior tibial veins (PTVs) and tibial nerve (TN). Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is the entrapment neuropathy that describes the compression and irritation of the TN within this space. Iatrogenic injury to the PTA plays a significant role in both the onset and exacerbation of TTS symptoms. The current study aims to

BACKGROUND: The heel is a complex anatomical region and is very often the source of pain complaints. The medial heel contains a number of structures, capable of compressing the main nerves of the region and knowing its anatomical topography is mandatory. The purpose of this work is to evaluate if tibial nerve (TN) and its main branches relate to the main anatomical landmarks of the ankle's medial side and if so, do they have a regular path after emerging from TN.
METHODS: The distal part of the legs, ankles and feet of 12 Thiel embalmed cadavers were dissected. The pattern of the branches of

Background The median artery (transitory artery) represents the forearm's embryonic arterial axis. At 8th week of gestation retreats into a little canal that supplies the median nerve. Later, ulnar and radial arteries take its place. Adults may still have it in either a palmar or an antebrachial pattern. The persistent median arteries are a long, angular arterial that extends to the hand's palmar surface. The median artery only partially recedes in the antebrachial type. Objective To identify the median artery distribution in the adult Nepalese population. Method Twenty-five adult human cadave

The far-lateral (FL) approach is a classic neurosurgical technique that enables access to the craniocervical junction, which includes the lower clivus, the anterior foramen magnum, and the first two cervical vertebrae. The FL approach also provides access to the inferior cranial nerves (i.e., CN IX, CN X, CN XI, and CN XII), distal portions of the vertebral artery (VA), and inferior basilar trunk. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) technology as well as dissections allow for a better understanding of the spatial relationships between anatomical landmarks and neurovascular structures enc

Surgical interventions involving the sympathetic trunk are increasingly performed to alleviate symptoms of several disorders such as hyperhidrosis. Anatomical variation has been highlighted as one of the main causes behind surgical failure and symptoms recurrence following surgeries conducted on the chain or its surroundings. This study therefore aimed to record anatomical variants within spinal segments C8-T10 of the sympathetic trunk. Thirty Thiel-embalmed cadavers were investigated bilaterally. The stellate ganglion was recorded on 29 sides. Its size was significantly greater in males and o

BACKGROUND: Extracranial to intracranial bypass is used to augment and/or replace the intracranial circulation for various pathologies. The superficial temporal artery is the mainstay donor for pedicled bypasses to the anterior circulation but can be limited by its variable size, low native flow rates, and potential scalp complications. Interposition grafts such as the radial artery or greater saphenous vein are alternatives but are sometimes limited by size mismatch, length needed to reach the extracranial circulation, and loss of inherent vascular elasticity. Interposition grafts between the

Despite advances in needle positioning techniques, nerve damage still occurs after regional anesthesia. Recognized causes include local anesthetic toxicity, subperineural injection, high subepineural fluid injection pressures and subepineural hematoma after forceful needle--nerve contact. We hypothesize that subperineural injection is still possible, but less likely to be the cause of nerve damage because needle penetration of fascicles and mechanical damage is difficult to achieve. High-resolution (75 µm) 40 MHz micro-ultrasound images of pig axillae show short-bevelled 22 g, 0.7 mm wide block

BACKGROUND: The benefits of using cadaveric humans in surgical training are well documented, and knowledge of the latest endovascular techniques is essential in the daily practice of vascular surgeons. Our study explores the feasibility of an affordable human cadaveric model with pulsatile and heated antegrade perfusion for reliable and reproducible endovascular or surgical simulation.
METHODS: We undertook cannulation of 7 human cadavers embalmed in a saturated salt solution to create a left-to-right central perfusion with a heated solution, from the ascending thoracic aorta to the right atr

INTRODUCTION: Although bicondylar arthroplasty showed great functional results, it encounters some difficulties to be performed routinely. On the other hand, arthroscopic techniques tend to replace open surgical techniques in sports medicine but strive to be developed in the field of arthroplasty. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of a micro-invasive bi-compartmental knee arthroplasty using both arthroscopic and robotic technologies (A-BiUKA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on complete fresh-frozen and embalmed cadaveric specimens. The main criterion of judgment was t
