Effects of a soluble essential oil additive on inflammatory response, epithelial integrity, and performance of broilers subjected to an experimental infectious bronchitis virus challenge.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) remains one of the major respiratory pathogens affecting broiler production, compromising performance, respiratory integrity, and immune function. This study evaluated the effects of a water-soluble additive containing eucalyptus, camphor, mint, and copaiba essential oils administered either by environmental spraying or through the drinking water to broilers subjected to an experimental IBV challenge. A total of 280 one-day-old Cobb 500 male broilers were allocated to four treatments: nonchallenged control, IBV challenge (challenged untreated group), IBV chall

Lignin Selection Improves the Performance of Porous Carbon Nanofiber Electrodes in Freestanding Supercapacitors.

Lignin is an attractive precursor for renewable carbon materials due to its low cost and comparatively high carbon yield. The resulting carbons may be used in energy storage devices (supercapacitors and batteries) and structural composites. Since lignin has substantial variability in its chemical structure, influenced by its botanical origin and the method of extraction, this work explores the effect of lignin type on the structure and performance of porous carbon materials, using electrospun carbon nanofibers applied as freestanding supercapacitor electrodes as an example. Precursor nanofiber

Methyl jasmonate-loaded chitosan nanoparticles and biochar improve maize thermotolerance.

Heat stress is a major abiotic constraint that severely limits maize (Zea mays L.) productivity under changing climate conditions. This study explored a novel integrative strategy to enhance thermotolerance in maize through the combined application of methyl jasmonate-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (MJNPs) and eucalyptus-derived biochar (EBB). Methyl jasmonate was nano-encapsulated using the ionic gelation method and characterized by SEM, TEM, and FTIR analyses, which confirmed uniform spherical nanoparticles and effective surface functionalization. A greenhouse experiment was conducted under c

Relationship Between Understory Plant Diversity and Soil Physicochemical Properties in Four Vegetation Restoration Forest Types in the Latosol Gully Erosion Area on Hainan Island.

Studying the relationships between understory plant diversity and soil physicochemical properties aids in understanding the sustainable development of plantation forests. Vegetation restoration in latosol gully erosion areas plays a key role in preventing soil erosion. Variations in understory plant diversity and soil physicochemical properties in areas that have undergone vegetation restoration subsequent to gully erosion are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the understory species composition, importance values, plant diversity, and soil physicochemical properties and explo

Effect of pyrogallol nanocomposite on miRNA and its associated pathways during radiation-induced toxicity in small intestine of irradiated Balb/C mice.

Cancer is the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells that changes the structure of nearby cells or tissues. Cancer treatment strategies include surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy. Radiation therapy is one of the most frequently used cancer treatment modalities. Ionizing radiation not only kills cancer cells but also affects surrounding normal cells, causing extensive damage to all organs including the liver, kidneys, and intestines. Thus, identifying radioprotective agents is crucial to reduce the side effects of radiotherapy. Recently, nanocomposites have played a cruci

A new topical formulation enhances relative diclofenac bioavailability in healthy male subjects.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT: • Therapy with topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) relies on the ability of the active drug to penetrate the skin in sufficiently high amounts to exert a clinical effect, which is linked to the specific galenic properties of the formulation. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS: • This phase 1 study characterizes the transdermal penetration and plasma exposure of different dose levels with galenic differences of a novel topical diclofenac formulation under development and indicates greater diclofenac penetration through the skin when compared with

Ethiopian Medicinal Plants Used for Respiratory Tract Disorders: Ethnomedicinal Review.

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) refer to infections in any part of the respiratory tract, which are common, with most of the world's population contracting at least one infection annually. These infections are becoming important causes of death and morbidity due to the rapid development of antimicrobial resistance that has resulted in reduced efficacy of existing drugs. Different local societies residing in Ethiopia have been reported to use traditional medicinal plants to treat RTIs. Nevertheless, up-to-date summarized data on the diversity of plants used in the traditional medicine syste

Concordance of clinical and environmental isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii by random amplification of polymorphic DNA analysis and PCR fingerprinting.

Sixty-one clinical and forty-nine environmental isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii from Australia and the United States were analyzed by random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD), using 12- to 22-mer primers in pairs, and/or PCR fingerprinting with a single primer derived from the microsatellite core sequence of the wild-type phage M13 (5' GAGGGTGGCGGTTCT 3'). Three major genetic profiles were identified by both typing techniques. A single RAPD profile (VGI) predominated among clinical isolates (44 of 48, 92%) and isolates from host eucalypts (45 of 45, 100%) from Australia.

[Prediction of the species distribution of Cryptococcus neoformans throughout Turkey].

Cryptococcus neoformans is a human pathogenic yeast that causes life-threatening infections especially in immunosuppressed patients. The environmental isolation of C.neoformans from Turkey was reported as early as 2004, although this was mostly from Eucalyptus camaldulensis colonization. Successful isolations were also reported from pomegranate (Punica granatum), oriental plane (Platanus orientalis), pine tree (Pinaceae), chestnut (Castanea sativa) and salt cedar (Tamarix hispida). The investigation of the relationship between the bioclimatic factors affecting the environmental isolation sites

Three Togolese aromatic plants' essential oils diurnal variations and their insecticidal activities against the dengue vector Aedesaegypti.

The present reported work deals with the ability of Togolese plants' essential oils (EOs) to act as repellents for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in order to use them as personal protective requirements or actions against mosquito bites and therefore to drastically reduce the risk of contracting dengue or yellow fever. EOs studied here were extracted from dry leaves of Ageratum conyzoides L., Eucalyptus citriodora Hook, and Lantana camara Linn, three plants that were collected at different daytimes (7 a.m., 1 p.m., and 7 p.m.) at various locations in Togo. Using a Clevenger-type device, EOs were obt

Effects of terrestrial dissolved organic matter on a bloom of the toxic cyanobacteria, Raphidiopsis raciborskii.

The concentration of coloured terrestrial dissolved organic matter (tDOM) from vegetation appears to be increasing in lakes in some regions of the world, leading to the term brownification. The light attenuating effect of coloured tDOM on phytoplankton growth has been a major focus of attention, but the phytotoxic effects of tDOM, particularly on cyanobacterial blooms, are less well understood. This mesocosm study tested whether coloured tDOM, leached from the leaves of a Eucalyptus tree species, inhibited a naturally occurring bloom of the toxic cyanobacterium, Raphidiopsis raciborskii, in a

A Recurrent Epiphytotic of Guava Rust on Rose Apple, Syzygium jambos, in Hawaii.

A Neotropical rust of the Myrtaceae, Puccinia psidii Winter, was described from Psidium guajava L., or guava, in Brazil in 1884 (1). It was first discovered in Hawaii on potted Metrosideros polymorpha Gaud. on Oahu in April 2005 (2) with pathogenicity and identity established (3). It spread quickly, and by January 2006, severe outbreaks of this rust occurred statewide on new leaves of Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston, or rose apple. Rose apple, a native to South and Southeast Asia, was introduced to Hawaii in 1825 and is locally abundant to invasive from just above sea level to as high as 1,000 m i
