Assessing the Efficiency of Local Rabies Vaccination Strategies for Raccoons (Procyon lotor) in an Urban Setting.

Raccoon rabies virus (RRV) has been managed using multiple vaccination strategies, including oral rabies vaccination and trap-vaccinate-release (TVR). Identifying a rabies vaccination strategy for an area is a nontrivial task. Vaccination strategies differ in the amount of effort and monetary costs required to achieve a particular level of vaccine seroprevalence (efficiency). Simulating host movement relative to different vaccination strategies in silico can provide a useful tool for exploring the efficiency of different vaccination strategies. We refined a previously developed individual-base

A systematic review and meta-analysis of predictors of human hepatitis E virus exposure in non-endemic countries.

The reported incidence of clinical hepatitis E cases is rising in some non-endemic countries, with concurrent concerns regarding potential hepatitis E virus (HEV) contamination of the blood supply. Therefore, the characterization of major potential sources of human HEV exposure is important to inform risk assessment and public health policy. A systematic review was conducted, including a comprehensive search in six electronic bibliographic databases, verified by hand-searching reference lists of HEV reviews, and a grey literature search, of the broad research question 'what is the evidence of

Enhancing Health Through Access to Nature: How Effective are Interventions in Woodlands in Deprived Urban Communities? A Quasi-experimental Study in Scotland, UK.

High prevalence of poor mental health is a major public health problem. Natural environments may contribute to mitigating stress and enhancing health. However, there is little evidence on whether community-level interventions intended to increase exposure to natural environments can improve mental health and related behaviours. In the first study of its kind, we evaluated whether the implementation of a programme designed to improve the quality of, and access to, local woodlands in deprived communities in Scotland, UK, was associated with lower perceived stress or other health-related outcomes

Comparative Proteomic Analysis of Plant-Pathogen Interactions in Resistant and Susceptible Poplar Ecotypes Infected with Botryosphaeria dothidea.

Poplar are important forestry species in China, but the Botryosphaeria dothidea pathogen causes serious economic losses worldwide. To identify candidate B. dothidea resistance proteins and explore the molecular mechanisms involved in poplar-pathogen interactions, proteomic responses of stem samples from resistant and susceptible poplar ecotypes to B. dothidea were investigated using nanoflow liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with label-free quantitative analysis. We identified 588 proteins, divided into 21 biological process categories including 48 oxidoreductases, 72 hydrolytic e

Occupation, industry, and the risk of prostate cancer: a case-control study in Montréal, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Age, family history and ancestry are the only recognized risk factors for prostate cancer (PCa) but a role for environmental factors is suspected. Due to the lack of knowledge on the etiological factors for PCa, studies that are both hypothesis-generating and confirmatory are still needed. This study explores relationships between employment, by occupation and industry, and PCa risk. METHODS: Cases were 1937 men aged ≤75 years with incident PCa diagnosed across Montreal French hospitals in 2005-2009. Controls were 1994 men recruited concurrently from electoral lists of French-spea

Effects of Neonicotinoid Pesticide Exposure on Human Health: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have identified detectable levels of neonicotinoids (neonics) in the environment, adverse effects of neonics in many species, including mammals, and pathways through which human exposure to neonics could occur, yet little is known about the human health effects of neonic exposure. OBJECTIVE: In this systematic review, we sought to identify human population studies on the health effects of neonics. METHODS: Studies published in English between 2005 and 2015 were searched using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. No restrictions were placed on the type of

Epidemiology of leptospira transmitted by rodents in southeast Asia.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is the most common bacterial zoonoses and has been identified as an important emerging global public health problem in Southeast Asia. Rodents are important reservoirs for human leptospirosis, but epidemiological data is lacking. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We sampled rodents living in different habitats from seven localities distributed across Southeast Asia (Thailand, Lao PDR and Cambodia), between 2009 to 2010. Human isolates were also obtained from localities close to where rodents were sampled. The prevalence of Leptospira infection was assessed by real-time

Age-related evaluation of peripheral circulation of workers with vibration exposure.

This study was designed to clarify the age variation of the indices in the accelerated plethysmography (APG) for fingers and set the standard ageing curve. The indices of APG of workers with exposure to vibration were compared with those of the standard ageing curves. The subjects were 815 male workers, ranging in age from 18 to 66, without exposure to vibration and without history of hypertension, circulatory diseases or diabetes. Their indices of APG are used establishing the standard ageing curves. The workers occupationally exposed to hand-arm vibration were also the subjects to evaluate p

Rubber plantations and drug resistant malaria: a cross-sectional survey in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing spread of artemisinin resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria is a major threat to global health. In response, countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, including Cambodia, have declared ambitious goals to eliminate malaria. Major challenges include the lack of information on the at-risk population-individuals who live or work in or near the forest where the malaria vectors are found, including plantation workers. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap through a cross-sectional survey conducted in rubber plantations in Cambodia in 2014. METHODS: The survey wa

Workplace incivility and employee sleep: The role of rumination and recovery experiences.

This study examines the role of negative work rumination and recovery experiences in explaining the association between workplace incivility and employee insomnia symptoms. Drawing on the perseverative cognition model of stress and the effort-recovery model, we hypothesize a moderated mediation model in which workplace incivility is associated with insomnia symptoms via negative work rumination. This indirect effect is proposed to be conditional on employees' reported level of recovery experiences (i.e., psychological detachment from work and relaxation during nonwork time). In examining this

Grapevine exarcerbates the virulence of Neofusicoccum parvum through an overproduction of the phytotoxin terremutin.

INTRODUCTION: Assessing the virulence of Neofusicoccum parvum (Np) remains challenging due to its broad host range and ability to infect numerous agriculturally and forestry important plant species. As a hemibiotrophic fungus, Np can persist as a latent endophyte before transitioning to a necrotrophic pathogen, with the timing and severity of this shift depending on strain-specific virulence. In grapevine, Np is a major causal agent of Botryosphaeria dieback, secreting phytotoxins that are strongly suspected to drive the Np lifestyle transition to necrotrophy through their tissue-necrotizing a

Lime for Lyme: Treatment of Leaf Litter with Dolomitic Lime Powder Impairs Activity of Immature Ixodes scapularis Ticks.

Background: Tick-borne diseases are an emerging threat to public health throughout the temperate world, leading to a growing field of research aimed at developing and testing intervention strategies for reducing human-tick encounters or prevalence of infection in ticks. Various wide-spectrum chemical acaricides have proven effective for controlling tick populations, but many of these have potential deleterious side-effects on health and the environment. In addition to chemical acaricides, certain compounds such as diatomaceous earth have been shown to have physical acaricidal properties. We hy

Removal of copper from sulfate solutions using biochar derived from crab processing by-product.

Increasing metal demand is accelerating the mining and processing of minerals, however to ensure sustainable growth innovative approaches are required to better manage associated effluents. Biochar from the fast pyrolysis of residues from fishery and forestry operations has been studied as a low-cost, environmentally and economically friendly method for treating mine tailings and processing effluents. However, the bulk of the studies focus on terrestrial biomass (e.g. wood) and do not include potential inhibition/enhancement of adsorption due to pH controlling compounds. In this work biochar g

Utilization of Biomass to Ash: An Overview of the Potential Resources for Alternative Energy.

Climate change and the potential depletion of fossil fuels have increased international demand for alternative and renewable energy sources. In terms of the energy sector, for example, most of the South-East Asian countries (SACs) have a large number of biomass sources due to their vast forest resources and agriculture-based economies. Thus, the critical review was aimed at highlighting the overview of biomass energy in South-East Asia as a dynamically developing region, in order to obtain economic and environmental benefits from the existing sources of biomass in the world. The current review

Trends in cancer risks among Swedish agricultural workers.

The Swedish Cancer-Environment Register was used to study time-related trends in relative risks (RRs) of cancer between 1961 and 1979 in a cohort of 254,417 Swedish men who were employed in agriculture in 1960. The reference cohort consisted of 1,725,845 Swedish men who were gainfully employed in economic activities other than agriculture or forestry in 1960. Altogether 24,763 cancers were observed in the study cohort and 146,900 in the reference cohort, giving an estimated RR for the entire study period of 0.82 (95% confidence interval: 0.81-0.83). The RR for all sites combined increased from
