INTRODUCTION: Hepatic abscess can be defined as an encapsulated collection of suppurative material within the liver parenchyma. Hepatic abscess can be distinguished as pyogenic, amebic, or fungal. Biliary tract disease remains the most common cause of hepatic abscess today, and the most common complications range from pleural effusion, empyema, and bronchohepatic fistula to subphrenic abscess and rupture into the peritoneal cavity, stomach, colon, vena cava, or kidney. A large abscess compressing the inferior vena cava and the hepatic veins may result in Budd-Chiari syndrome. In this report, w

Hepatic tuberculosis (HTB) is a rare manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and represents fewer than 1% of all tuberculosis cases. From an imaging perspective, HTB poses a significant diagnostic challenge because its ultrasonographic appearances are highly variable and frequently mimic hepatic malignancy or pyogenic abscess, often resulting in delayed or incorrect diagnosis. This review focuses on the ultrasonographic features of hepatic and hepatobiliary TB, with reference to the epidemiologic data from Southeast Asia and Taiwan. Ultrasonography remains the most commonly used firs

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) is an emerging cause of community-acquired pyogenic liver abscess (PLA), classically described in East and Southeast Asia. We report two cases of hvKp-associated PLA in Caucasian women of American origin with no history of international travel, animal exposure, or Asian food consumption. Both patients presented with fever and right upper quadrant abdominal pain and were found to have solitary hepatic abscesses on imaging. Blood and abscess cultures confirmed K. pneumoniae with a positive string test (> 5 mm), K2 capsular serotype, and rmpA gene, estab

Ultrasonography revealed evidence of liver abscess in 126 patients who were admitted to one hospital in northeastern Thailand over a 3-year period. There were 50 cases for which a pyogenic bacterial etiology was confirmed; 34 cases (group 1) were caused by Pseudomonas pseudomallei (nine patients died) and 16 cases (group 2) were caused by other bacteria (two patients died). Melioidosis was associated with anemia and underlying diabetes or renal disease; right-upper-quadrant pain and jaundice were more common in group 2 (P less than .05). Blood cultures were positive for bacteria in 68% of grou

We report a 28-year-old woman, pregnant, at 24 weeks, with 3-day history of right-sided chest pain and shortness of breath. Few hours after admission, she delivered a dead baby. She had a history of right partial hepatic lobotomy and cholecystectomy at UK on May 2004 because of multiple pyogenic liver abscesses. Chest examination revealed signs of hydrothorax on the right side. Chest X-ray showed pleural effusion on the right side. Pleural fluid was exudative with high neutrophils. Gram stain and culture showed multiple organisms. CT scan chest and abdomen with contrast, combined with barium e

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a global health issue affecting millions of people worldwide. While pulmonary tuberculosis is common, hepatic tuberculosis is rare and accounts for less than 1% of cases. Diagnosis is challenging owing to nonspecific symptoms and its ability to mimic other hepatic diseases.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 62-year-old male healthcare worker, originally from the Philippines and of Filipino ethnicity, who was initially suspected to have cystic echinococcosis, an epidemiologically uncommon zoonotic disease in both Austria and the Philippines. Echinococc

Cystic lesions of the liver in the adult can be classified as developmental, neoplastic, inflammatory, or miscellaneous. Although in some cases it is difficult to distinguish these entities with imaging criteria alone, certain cystic focal liver lesions have classic computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features, which are important for the radiologist to understand and recognize. Lesions with such features include simple (bile duct) cyst, autosomal dominant polycystic liver disease, biliary hamartoma, Caroli disease, undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma, biliary cystad

Common bile duct (CBD) cancer is a relatively rare malignancy that arises from the biliary epithelium and is associated with a poor prognosis. Here, we report a case of advanced metastatic CBD cancer successfully treated by chemotherapy with gemcitabine combined with S-1 (tegafur+gimeracil+oteracil). A 65-year-old male presented with pyogenic liver abscess. After antibiotic therapy and percutaneous drainage, follow-up computed tomography (CT) showed an enhanced nodule in the CBD. Biopsy was performed at the CBD via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, which showed adenocarcinoma. Ad

BACKGROUND: Since 1985, amoebic liver abscess (ALA) has been a public health problem in northern Sri Lanka. Clinicians arrive at a diagnosis based on clinical and ultrasonographic findings, which cannot differentiate pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) from ALA. As the treatment and outcome of the ALA and PLA differs, determining the etiological agent is crucial.
METHODS: All clinically diagnosed ALA patients admitted to the Teaching Hospital (TH) in Jaffna during the study period were included and the clinical features, haematological parameters, and ultrasound scanning findings were obtained. Aspi

Liver abscess (LA) is a common health problem among children in tropical countries. We conducted a prospective, observational study at a tertiary-care medical college in order to examine the clinico-socio-demographic profile and assess a possible association between certain predictors of a poor outcome in children admitted with LA. Of a total of 53 children, only 24.4% were malnourished. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common organism observed. Amoebic LA was noted in 7.5%. Right-sided pleural effusion was the most common complication recorded (20.7%). The most successful treatment modality

Thirty nine cases of liver abscess--33 pyogenic (LAP) and 6 amebic (LAA)--attended in our hospital between 1980 and 1994, were reviewed. Mean patient age was 55.66 years (LAP) and 35.83 years (LAA), while the relation male/female was 2.3:1 and 5:1 respectively. The most usual underlying pathology in LAP was bile duct disease (39.39%). Four patients with LAA had travelled to endemic areas. Fever was the most frequent clinical finding (71.79%). Echography and/or CT scan confirmed the diagnosis in 32 patients (82.05%), with a sensitivity of 86.66 and 95.65% respectively. Positive cultures were fo

This study aimed to identify the recovery predictors for patients with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) and diabetes who are undergoing antibiotic therapy, and to develop an effective nomogram for predicting the antibiotic treatment duration (ORT). This retrospective study included consecutive PLA patients with diabetes who received antibiotic treatment, with ORT defined as the time from the initiation of antibiotic therapy to its cessation. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the main predictors of ORT. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and a nomogram were subsequently cons

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is an infrequently seen complication of appendicitis that once was common, but now is so rare many textbooks omit the condition entirely. In this report, we document a recent case of post-appendicitis PLA in an eight-year-old Hispanic female treated with a combination of medical and surgical management. We have detailed the course of treatment, both to raise awareness of this uncommon complication of appendicitis and to help provide a guide for other clinicians treating similar cases. While cases of pediatric PLA post-appendicitis are rare in the modern world, time

AIM: Laparoscopic appendectomy is currently the treatment of choice for acute appendicitis in emergency setting. When appendicitis is clinically suspected, an appendicolith can be found in 30% of the patients. Retained or dropped appendicoliths are an uncommon complication that may occur as a consequence of stone expulsion from the appendix, before or during laparoscopic appendectomies. This is very rare with only 30 reported cases of intra-abdominal abscess secondary to an appendicolith in the literature over the past 40 years. The objective of this case report is to illustrate an intrahepati

Purpose Hepatic abscesses remain a significant clinical challenge due to high morbidity and mortality. This research aims to examine the etiological spectrum, management approaches, clinical features, and results in hepatic abscesses in a tertiary care facility in northern India, emphasizing the distinctions among pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs) and amoebic liver abscesses (ALAs). Methods This retrospective study was done at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, analyzing 725 patients with hepatic abscesses over a 10-year period. Patients were included based on confirmed diagnoses of ALAs or PLAs thro

Pyogenic abscess of the liver is viewed here as a surgical disease, which appears to raise doubts as to its actual identity. Though located in a given abdominal organ, such abscesses find it hard to recognize this as their exclusive setting and attempt to shrug off these traditional confines. They aspire, rightly or wrongly perhaps, to symbolize a splanchnic context, though, in actual fact, the latter--at least for contingent, doctrinal reasons--is confined to the bipolar liver-bowel system. This context presents its candidacy as playing a leading role in a disease of such importance as to be
