OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that influence contraceptive initiation among women with medical conditions.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional survey of women 18-45 years old with medical conditions who received contraception consultation from complex family planning specialists at five University of California Medical Centers from June 2014-June 2015. We asked survey participants about factors that influence their decision of choosing and initiating a contraceptive method, how they accessed family planning specialists and the impact of this consultation on their contra

BACKGROUND: The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is a long-acting reversible contraceptive. In 2023, the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) extended its recommended duration of use from 5 to 8 years. This change underlines the need to re-examine the balance of efficacy and risks associated with LNG-IUS.
AIM: To systematically review evidence on contraceptive effectiveness, safety, and acceptability of LNG-IUS, and evaluate its alignment with updated FSRH guidance.
METHOD: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Scopus (April 2025)

UNLABELLED: Background Long-acting reversible contraceptives are an effective means of preventing unwanted pregnancies and associated negative consequences. The Sexual Health and Family Planning Association of Australia has called for efforts to address barriers to the uptake of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) in Australia, where LARC uptake is thought to be low, though comprehensive data describing use and associated factors is scarce. The aims of this study were to describe patterns of prescriptions for the etonogestrel-releasing subdermal implant (SDI) in Australia, 2008-2012,

OBJECTIVE: To explore health care providers' communication practices during contraceptive counseling for women with substance use disorders (SUDs).
STUDY DESIGN: In 2019, we conducted semi-structured phone interviews with a purposive sample of medical doctors and advanced practice nurses (n = 24). A two-member team analyzed these interviews for themes using deductive and inductive techniques and ATLAS.ti to manage the data.
RESULTS: Providers discussed that developing strong interpersonal relationships and trust is critically important to provide effective contraceptive counseling to women w

OBJECTIVE: Women who have abortions are at high risk of contraception discontinuation and subsequent unintended pregnancy. The objective of this analysis was to identify factors associated with choice of highly effective, long-acting, progestin-only contraceptive methods after abortion.
STUDY DESIGN: Women presenting for surgical abortion who selected the levonorgestrel intrauterine device (IUD), the progestin implant or the progestin injection (depot medroxyprogesterone acetate or DMPA) as their postabortion contraceptives were recruited to participate in a 1-year prospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of age on continuation rates of reversible contraceptive methods among females aged 14-19 years and women aged 20-25 years compared with women older than 25 years of age.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 7,472 participants enrolled in the Contraceptive CHOICE Project, a prospective cohort study of women offered no-cost contraception. Our primary objective was to compare 12-month continuation rates between females aged 14-19, 20-25, and 26 years and older. We collected data about method continuation from telephone surveys and chart review. We used Kaplan-Meier su

Long-acting reversible contraception with progestin-only subdermal implants is widely adopted. However, the breast cancer (BC) risk signal attributable to implants remains under-characterized, limiting evidence-based counseling. We systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus, and screened references for observational cohort and case-control studies evaluating progestin-only implant versus non-use hormonal contraception in adolescents and premenopausal women without prior BC. The primary endpoint was incident BC (invasive with/without in situ, per study definition). Maximally adju

INTRODUCTION: Investigating factors associated with contraceptive satisfaction is important to create a basis for tailored contraceptive counseling. In this study, we aimed to explore how sociodemographic characteristics affected women's level of satisfaction and choice of different contraceptive methods, using data collected during a randomized controlled trial (RCT) in the region Örebro County, Sweden.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized data from a previously conducted RCT. Eligible participants were women aged 20-40 years who sought contraceptive counseling. All women who partici

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine contraceptive device, a type of long-acting reversible contraception, is one of the most effective and safe contraceptive methods. In Ethiopia, intrauterine contraceptive device is little known and practised to delay pregnancy. Therefore, this study aimed to assess post-partum intrauterine contraceptive device utilisation and its associated factors among women in Ethiopia.
METHOD: In the current meta-analysis, variables were searched from different electronic database systems, including PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, HINAR, Scopus, Web of Sciences, and Grey liter

OBJECTIVES: Pharmacists are increasingly providing patient-focused services in community pharmacies, including in the area of sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Specific SRH areas have been the focus of research, but a broader perspective is needed to position pharmacists as SRH providers. This review explored research that described and evaluated professional pharmacy services across a broad range of SRH areas.

BACKGROUND: In the Philippines, one in four pregnancies are unintended and 610 000 unsafe abortions are performed each year. This study explored the association between missed opportunities to provide family planning counseling, quality of counseling and its impact on utilization of effective contraception in the Philippines.
METHODS: One-hundred-one nationally representative health facilities were randomly selected from five levels of the health system. Sexually-active women 18-49 years old, wanting to delay or limit childbearing, attending primary care clinics between April 24 and August 8,

OBJECTIVE: The National Survey of Family Growth has been a primary data source for trends in US women's contraceptive use. However, national-level data may mask differences in contraceptive practice resulting from variation in local policies and norms.
STUDY DESIGN: We used the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, a survey of women who are 2-4 months postpartum. Information on women's current method was available for 18 reporting areas from 2000 to 2009. Using the two most recent years of data, we computed the weighted proportion of women using specific contraceptive methods according

Adolescent women aged 19 or younger make up a substantial and growing proportion of women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries. Several key features of the reproductive life course ground the need to disaggregate the contraceptive behaviors of adolescent women from those of older women, including relationship dynamics, resources and autonomy, and cultural and societal expectations regarding sexual activity and childbearing. Despite the importance and unique life course features of adolescent women, we lack the information about their contraceptive dynamics-especially their p

Hormonal contraceptives are highly prevalent. Currently, little is known about Irish hormonal contraceptive trends to date since the 1995 British media contraceptive controversy. The aim of this study was to examine recent trends in contraceptive use in Ireland and to determine the frequency of co-prescriptions with important interacting medications. Approximately 40% of the Irish population are prescribed 70% of total medicines under the Irish GMS scheme. Medicines were identified using the WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification system. Regression analysis was used to examin

Reversible contraceptives empower women to prevent unintended pregnancies and enable family planning. However, the need for frequent dosing with pills or injections often leads to suboptimal medication adherence and reduced effectiveness-an issue common to many chronic conditions. Long-acting drug delivery implants offer a compelling alternative by enabling autonomous, multi-year drug release, thereby improving real-world adherence and treatment outcomes. However, user acceptability and access are limited by need for invasive insertion and surgical end-of-life removal, particularly in low-reso

Objective: To describe referral patterns and attendance at follow-up visits for patients who received contraceptive counseling via telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic. Study Design: This is a prospective study of patients seen remotely during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. We tracked referral rates, referral reasons, in-person visit show rates, and additional visits. We also administered a patient survey at 6 months. Using Stata SE 16, we conducted a multivariable modified Poisson regression with robust error variances to examine the predictors of attending an
