Neuroinflammatory Gene Expression Alterations in Anterior Cingulate Cortical White and Gray Matter of Males With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Evidence for putative pathophysiological mechanisms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including peripheral inflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, white matter alterations, and abnormal synaptic overgrowth, indicate a possible involvement of neuroinflammation in the disorder. Neuroinflammation plays a role in the development and maintenance of the dendritic spines involved in glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmission, and also influences blood-brain permeability. Cytokines released from microglia can impact the length, location or organization of dendritic spines on excitatory and i

The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS-2) in school-age children with Down syndrome at low risk for autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Little is known about how autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms present in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Some behaviors may be symptomatic of comorbid ASD or more broadly representative of the DS phenotype. A prior research study documented elevated ASD-like symptoms in adolescents and young adults with DS without comorbid ASD, using a common ASD risk screening tool-the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS). The current study applied a similar approach to younger children with DS using the SRS-2. The primary aim was to document patterns of ASD-like symptoms in childre

Clinical interview skills and identification of emotional disorders in primary care.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to study the relationship between the clinical interview skills of primary care physicians and their psychodiagnostic ability during office visits. METHOD: Ten doctors took part in the study, and 233 patients were assessed. The patients were seen and diagnosed by their physicians and interviewed afterward by a psychiatrist using the Present State Examination. All the interviews with the primary care physicians were recorded on videotape, and the Physician's Skills Observation Scale was used to analyze 10 interviews per doctor, five psychiatric cases and

Low Versus High Levels of Social Cognition Impairment and Their Associations With Specific Schizophrenia Symptom Domains.

OBJECTIVE: Social cognition is defined as the ability to construct mental representations about oneself, others, and one's relationships with others to guide social behaviors, including referring to mental states (cognitive factor) and understanding emotional states (affective factor). Difficulties in social cognition may be symptoms of schizophrenia. The authors examined associations between two factors of social cognition and specific schizophrenia symptoms, as well as a potential path from low-level affective perceptual social cognition to high-level social cognition, which may be associate

Normative Data For Nonverbal Memory Tests In A Sample Of Deaf Adults that use French Sign Language.

OBJECTIVE: Specific cognitive functioning is described among people with prelingual deafness who use sign language. This would be linked to sensorial deprivation from a premature age and associated with early exposure to sign language leading to a different organization of visuo-attentional and linguistic processes in deaf people, and thus to specific functioning of the nonverbal memory system. Due to a lack of validation, psychometric tests cannot be used to assess cognitive and memory disorders in deaf people who communicate in French Sign Language. METHODS: We previously transposed the val

Longitudinal predictors of French word reading difficulties among French Immersion children.

In Canada, approximately 12% of school-aged children are enrolled in French Immersion (FI), with some provinces estimating close to 30%. FI programs are intended to produce bilingual individuals who can functionally communicate in both of Canada's official languages. Yet, we are currently underinformed as to how to identify children with French word reading difficulties in such programs. Within this context, and in the interests of informing early identification of second language reading challenges, we examined early English predictors of French word reading difficulties. We also examined pot

Mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) - like exogenous sequences are associated with sporadic but not hereditary human breast carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Pragmatic language weaknesses, a core feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are implicated in externalizing behavior disorders (Gremillion & Martel, 2014). Particularly in a clinical setting, these co-occurring externalizing disorders are very common in autism; rates of Attentional Deficit-Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) are as high as 83% (ADHD) and 73% (ODD; Joshi et al., 2010). It is possible that pragmatic language weaknesses impact the ability to effectively communicate one's needs, which may lead autistic children to utilize externaliz

Mental retardation in teenagers: prevalence data from the Niagara region, Ontario.

OBJECTIVES: There are few Canadian prevalence studies of mental retardation (MR); those that do exist were conducted prior to the era of community integration. We undertook a population-based study to explore mental health disturbances in young persons with MR. The first requirement was to identify a population with MR and to establish its prevalence. Here, we report data on the prevalence of MR in a population aged 14 to 20 years. METHOD: We conducted the study in the Niagara Region of Ontario, which has a population base of around 400,000. Researchers worked closely with schools and with ag

Bilingualism predicts executive function resilience after COVID-19 in aging.

Bilingualism has been associated with enhanced executive functions (EFs), particularly attentional control, and may confer protection against cognitive decline in older age. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as a factor negatively affecting EF in older adults. Bilingualism might offer resilience against these COVID-related cognitive declines, especially in late adulthood, by bolstering cognitive reserve. The present study collected data from 312 community-dwelling individuals spanning the adult lifespan (aged 18 to 80) to address two goals. Goal 1 was to identify a latent str

The application of a neuropsychological measure of executive working memory in older adults with memory impairment.

The component of working memory that the frontal cortex subserves is frequently characterized as the executive working memory (EWM). This study applied a neuropsychological measure of EWM (NPM-EWM) in older adults with memory impairment to investigate the EWM. Thirty-two older adults from the community were recruited as older healthy controls (OHCs), and 58 older adults from a memory clinic were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia (MD). Significant differences were found among the three groups in the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), the Chinese version of Mini-Menta

Prospective Trial of CPAP in Community-Dwelling Adults with Down Syndrome and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

Adults with Down syndrome (DS) are predisposed to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), but the effectiveness and acceptability of continuous positive airway pressure treatment (CPAP) in this group has rarely been formally assessed. This study was designed as a pilot randomised, parallel controlled trial for one month, continuing as an uncontrolled cohort study whereby the control group also received the intervention. Symptomatic, community-dwelling DS individuals exhibiting ≥10 apnoeas/hypopneas per hour in bed on a Type 3 home sleep study were invited to participate in this study, with follow-up a

Higher order language competence and adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND: Clinic and community-based epidemiological studies have shown an association between child psychopathology and language impairment. The demands on language for social and academic adjustment shift dramatically during adolescence and the ability to understand the nonliteral meaning in language represented by higher order language becomes essential. OBJECTIVES: : This article reports on the association between difficulties in higher order language skills, reading, cognition, and social-emotional adjustment in adolescents. METHOD: : 144 clinic-referred and 186 comparison youth aged

AI-Powered Simulation for Nursing Education: Mixed Methods Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Traditional simulation-based nursing education is often constrained by high costs, resource intensity, and limited scalability. AI-powered simulations offer dynamic, scalable, and personalized alternatives. However, the empirical evidence regarding their pedagogical effectiveness and learner acceptance remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically evaluate and synthesize evidence on the effectiveness and learner perceptions of AI-powered simulations in nursing education. Early Intervention Influences 9-Year Speech, Language, Cognitive, and Quality-of-Life Outcomes in Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing Children.

OBJECTIVES: Early identification of congenital deafness enables early intervention, but evidence on the influence of age at fitting of hearing aids (HAs) or cochlear implants (CIs) on outcomes in school-aged children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) is limited. This study (1) described developmental outcomes and health-related quality of life in DHH children; and (2) examined the relationships among demographic factors, including age at fitting of HAs or CIs, and outcomes. DESIGN: This prospective cohort study included participants in a population-based study who were followed up at 9 ye

How Informal Carers Support Video Consulting in Physiotherapy, Heart Failure, and Cancer: Qualitative Study Using Linguistic Ethnography.

BACKGROUND: Informal carers play an important role in the everyday care of patients and the delivery of health care services. They aid patients in transportation to and from appointments, and they provide assistance during the appointments (eg, answering questions on the patient's behalf). Video consultations are often seen as a way of providing patients with easier access to care. However, few studies have considered how this affects the role of informal carers and how they are needed to make video consultations safe and feasible. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify how informal carers, u

Estimated Prevalence of Nonverbal Learning Disability Among North American Children and Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in visual-spatial processing but not in reading or verbal ability; in addition, problems in math calculation, visual executive functioning, fine-motor skills, and social skills are often present. To our knowledge, there are no population-based estimates of the prevalence of NVLD in community samples. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of the NVLD cognitive profile in 3 independent samples of children and adolescents from studies centered around brain imaging in the US and Canada. DE
