Noise-induced Hearing Loss Among Dental Personnel in a University Hospital: Occupational Noise Exposure and Lifestyle Factors - A Cross-sectional Analytical Study.

BACKGROUND: Sensorineural hearing loss is influenced by multiple factors, with occupational noise exposure being the key contributor. Dental personnel are routinely exposed to high-frequency sounds from clinical instruments. Although average clinic noise levels are typically below the 85 dBA threshold, cumulative exposure and high peak levels may increase the risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). This study assessed the workplace noise characteristics, prevalence, and risk factors for NIHL among dental personnel. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 184 staff members at

Blood From Both Ears: A Hidden Mandibular Condyle Fracture Revealed by Otorrhagia.

Otorrhagia following mandibular trauma may appear straightforward; however, underlying external auditory canal (EAC) fractures and associated condylar injuries can be easily overlooked without targeted evaluation. We present the case of an 88-year-old man who developed bilateral ear bleeding and hearing loss after falling and striking his chin. Computed tomography revealed bilateral mandibular condyle fractures with associated fractures of the anterior walls of both EACs. The canals were filled with hematoma, and hearing loss was presumed to result from mechanical obstruction. Otoscopic examin

Unilateral Bleomycin-induced Interstitial Pneumonitis Mouse Model With Both a Healthy and a Diseased Lung.

BACKGROUND/AIM: A standard mouse model of pulmonary fibrosis has been created by intratracheal or intraperitoneal administration of bleomycin. However, a difficulty presented by this traditional method is its high mortality rate of more than 50% after bleomycin administration. In this study, we aimed to establish a unilateral lung disease model and to assess its feasibility and usefulness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After 6-week-old C57BL/6 mice were anesthetized, a 1.7Fr microcatheter was advanced into the trachea using an otoscope. Then, 1.0 mg/kg of bleomycin was injected into bilateral lung a

Delayed-onset hearing loss in first-grade students who previously passed the newborn hearing screening.

INTRODUCTION: Newborn hearing screening is essential for the early detection of hearing loss, enabling timely intervention that supports communication and academic success. However, some children may develop delayed-onset hearing loss, which can go undetected without ongoing monitoring. Even mild hearing loss can affect educational development, highlighting the importance of preschool hearing screening. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of delayed-onset hearing loss in first-grade students who had previously passed newborn hearing screening, emphasizing the need for early identifi

Surgical Outcomes of Collagen Patch Versus Fat Plug in the Repair of Tympanic Membrane Perforations: A Prospective Study.

Small perforations of the tympanic membrane (TM) remain a common concern in otology, with potential consequences such as recurrent infections, conductive hearing loss, and cholesteatoma formation if left untreated. Conventional grafting materials like temporalis fascia are widely accepted, but minimally invasive office-based alternative, including collagen patch and fat plug, are increasingly recognized for their efficacy and patient convenience. This prospective study was conducted at Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Chrompet, Chennai, and included 46 patients aged 20-50 years with s

NLRP3 Inflammasome in Otitis Media With Effusion: Insights From Mouse Models and Human Samples.

PURPOSE: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a prevalent pediatric condition, yet its molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. The NLRP3 inflammasome is known to regulate inflammation in various diseases, but its role in OME remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate NLRP3 activation in OME using both a murine model and clinical samples. METHODS: Experimental OME was induced in mice via intratympanic injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). On day 3 postinduction, middle ear tissues and lavage fluid were collected. Nlrp3 mRNA expression was assessed by qPCR, while cleaved casp

Development and In Vivo Evaluation of a Novel Bioabsorbable Polylactic Acid Middle Ear Ventilation Tube.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a widespread condition that causes hearing impairment, particularly in pediatric populations. Existing non-absorbable tubes often require elective or unplanned removal surgery. Bioabsorbable polylactic acid (PLA) offers a promising alternative due to its inherent biocompatibility and tunable degradation characteristics. In this study, we designed, fabricated, and comprehensively evaluated a novel PLA middle-ear ventilation tube. METHODS: Bioabsorbable PLA tubes were designed and fabricated based on commercial models. In vitro biocompatibility wa

Accuracy of Video Otoscopy in Predicting the Presence of Middle Ear Effusion in Children Compared to Tympanometry: A Diagnostic Study.

IMPORTANCE: Middle ear effusion (MEE) is the primary cause of conductive hearing impairment among children, predominantly occurring up to the age of two years. The gold standard for detecting MEE is tympanometry (Grayson-Stadler, Eden Prairie, Minnesota). This study explores a less costly alternative, the video otoscope (Inventis S.R.L, Padova, Italy). OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to compare video otoscopy with tympanometry in terms of its ability to diagnose MEE. The secondary objective is to explore the prevalence of MEE in special populations. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective

Serous otitis media as a cause for language delay following cleft palate repair-A case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Serous otitis media (SOM), also called otitis media with effusion (OME) or glue ear, is a collection of non-purulent fluid within the middle ear space. Children with cleft palate are more prone to develop this condition. This is caused by impaired eustachian tube function in cleft palate. They may present with hearing loss, delayed speech, and language development or poor social behavior. This is a significant cause of conductive hearing loss in the early speech-forming years of their life. Even after an early surgical repair of palate, speech and language defects ar

Wideband Absorbance Pattern and its Diagnostic Value in Adults with Middle Ear Effusions and Tympanic Membrane Perforation.

BACKGROUND:: Middle ear effusion (MEE) and tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) are difficult to distinguish using existing immittance techniques, necessitating the use of a separate test battery. Wideband absorbance (WBA) tympanometry is a new enhanced technique, and studies have shown a reliable WBA pattern to identify middle ear disorders. Thus, the study was performed to determine the WBA across the frequencies in ears with MEE, TMP, and compared with normal hearing individuals. METHODS:: A total of 109 ears with TMP and 122 ears with MEE in the age range of 22-50 years were compared with

In Vivo Optical Characterization of Middle Ear Effusions and Biofilms During Otitis Media.

Otitis media (OM), a common ear infection, is characterized by the presence of an accumulated middle ear effusion (MEE) in a normally air-filled middle ear cavity. While assessing the MEE plays a critical role in the overall management of OM, identifying and examining the MEE is challenging with the current diagnostic tools since the MEE is located behind the semi-opaque eardrum. The objective of this cross-sectional, observational study is to non-invasively visualize and characterize MEEs and bacterial biofilms in the middle ear. A portable, handheld, otoscope-integrated optical coherence tom

Deficiency in vitamin D is associated with bilateral hearing impairment and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss in older adults.

Hearing impairment and vitamin D (VD) deficiency are both public health concerns. The purpose of the study was to examine whether VD deficiency and hearing impairment, specifically sensorineural hearing loss, are associated. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2001-2006, 2009-2012) were used in this cross-sectional study. The pure-tone average (PTA) was calculated for each ear at low speech frequencies of 0.5 to 4.0 kHz (LPTA) and higher frequencies of 3.0 to 8.0 kHz (HPTA). Hearing impairment was defined as >25 dB (LPTA/HPTA) and was further divided to "unilateral
