Chemical risk cues impact fish behavior and thermal tolerance, but effects vary with predation experience.

In response to predation risk in their microhabitat, prey can use chemical risk cues to modulate their antipredator behaviors. However, prey experience with predators may alter the response to predator odors. Using two experiments and lake-side assays, we asked whether inter- and intraspecific experience with an invasive predator affected behavior and thermal tolerance of prey fishes in Lake Nabugabo, Uganda, a lake that experienced the introduction of the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus) in the early 1960s. In doing so, we evaluated how warming and predation risk can interact to impact

Beaked whale (Ziphiidae) foraging along Australia's Northwest Shelf.

Beaked whales are elusive deep-diving odontocetes, and their distribution and foraging ecology remain poorly documented in Australian waters. This study presents a passive acoustic monitoring (PAM)-based assessment of beaked whale foraging activity along Australia's Northwest Shelf-a continental shelf region with features typically conducive to beaked whale sustenance. The area is also of economic significance due to ongoing offshore oil and gas production, commercial fishing, and commercial shipping, raising concerns about potential impacts on these deep-diving cetaceans. This study collected

Visual pursuit behavior in mice maintains the pursued prey on the retinal region with least optic flow.

Mice have a large visual field that is constantly stabilized by vestibular ocular reflex (VOR) driven eye rotations that counter head-rotations. While maintaining their extensive visual coverage is advantageous for predator detection, mice also track and capture prey using vision. However, in the freely moving animal quantifying object location in the field of view is challenging. Here, we developed a method to digitally reconstruct and quantify the visual scene of freely moving mice performing a visually based prey capture task. By isolating the visual sense and combining a mouse eye optic mo

The mite Machrocheles robustulus (Mesostigmata, Macrochelidae) a new promising natural enemy of Haemonchus contortus (Strongylida, Trichostrongylidae).

BACKGROUND: Antiparasitic resistance in sheep necessitates non-chemical strategies for gastrointestinal strongylosis control. We have evaluated the potential of three predatory mite species-Macrocheles robustulus, Macrocheles muscaedomesticae and Rhabdocarpais consanguineus-to reduce transmission of the nematode Haemonchus contortus by preying on infective larvae. METHODS: Under laboratory conditions, mites were exposed to mixed prey environments containing housefly Musca domestica eggs and H. contortus third-stage (L3) larvae. Predation was first monitored over 8 h. This was followed by a mo

Implications of predator species richness in terms of zoonotic spillover transmission of filovirus diseases in Africa.

BACKGROUND: A rich biodiversity of predators has been suggested to suppress the risk of zoonotic spillover by regulating prey abundance and behavior. We evaluated the association between predator species richness and spillover events of Ebolavirus and Marburgvirus in Africa. METHODS: Historical records of filovirus outbreaks, along with ecological, geographical and socioeconomic factors, were considered in this environmental study. We used the maximum entropy approach (Maxent modeling) and stacked species distribution models to estimate predator species richness. Logistic regression analyses

Toxin variation among salamander populations: discussing potential causes and future directions.

Amphibians produce defensive chemicals which provide protection against both predators and infections. Within species, populations can differ considerably in the composition and amount of these chemical defenses. Studying intraspecific variation in toxins and linking it to environmental variables may help us to identify the selective drivers of toxin evolution, such as predation pressure and infection risk. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in the unique toxins produced by salamanders from the genus Salamandra: the samandarines. Despite this attention, intraspecific variation has lar

Expression of Genes Involved in Offensive and Defensive Phenotype Induction in the Pituitary Gland of the Hokkaido Salamander (Hynobius retardatus).

Amphibians exhibit phenotypic plasticity, which allows flexible adaptation to fluctuating environments. Although genes involved in expression of plastic phenotypes have been identified, the endocrine bases of plastic responses are largely unknown. Larvae of the Hokkaido salamander (Hynobius retardatus) plastically display distinct phenotypes, an "offensive phenotype" characterized as larger body with broadened gape and a "defensive phenotype" characterized as enlarged gills and tail and less active behavior, in the presence of prey larval amphibians and predatory larval dragonfly, respectively

Effect of Pesticides on Biological Control Potential of Neoscona theisi (Araneae: Araneidae).

The present study was designed to record the effect of λ-cyhalothrin, Bifenthrin, and Glyphosate on the mortality, avoidance behavior, foraging activity, and activity of Acetylcholine esterase (AChE) and Carboxylesterase (CarE) in Neoscona theisi (Walckenaer, 1841). Highest mortality (70%) in N. theisi was recorded against λ-cyhalothrin. However, Glyphosate was found to be least toxic. Spider spent less time on insecticides/herbicide-treated surfaces. Insecticides/herbicide-treated N. theisi consumed less prey than untreated control spiders. Similarly, when N. theisi were offered insecticide/h

The assassin bug Pristhesancus plagipennis produces two distinct venoms in separate gland lumens.

The assassin bug venom system plays diverse roles in prey capture, defence and extra-oral digestion, but it is poorly characterised, partly due to its anatomical complexity. Here we demonstrate that this complexity results from numerous adaptations that enable assassin bugs to modulate the composition of their venom in a context-dependent manner. Gland reconstructions from multimodal imaging reveal three distinct venom gland lumens: the anterior main gland (AMG); posterior main gland (PMG); and accessory gland (AG). Transcriptomic and proteomic experiments demonstrate that the AMG and PMG prod

Directional Hydrodynamic Sensing by Free-Swimming Organisms.

Many aquatic organisms detect the presence of moving objects in their environment, such as predators, by sensing the hydrodynamic disturbances the movements produce. The resultant water flow is readily detectable by stationary organisms, but free-swimming organisms are carried with the surrounding water and may not detect the bulk surrounding flow, which limits the available information about the source. We have developed a theory that clarifies what information is contained in disturbances generated by an attacking predator that is available to a free-swimming organism and might be extracted

Evaluation of Bioinsecticides for Management of Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and the Effect on the Whitefly Predator Delphastus catalinae (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Organic Squash.

Organic zucchini squash is a high-value vegetable crop in Florida and potential exists to expand its production throughout the state. A lack of knowledge on the effectiveness of organic products and their integration with natural enemies is an important constraint to the regulation of pest populations in organic squash production in Florida. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of insecticides labeled for organic production that can be used for management of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B, on organically grown squash; and to determine the effects of the most efficient

Neural circuits underlying tongue movements for the prey-catching behavior in frog: distribution of primary afferent terminals on motoneurons supplying the tongue.

The hypoglossal motor nucleus is one of the efferent components of the neural network underlying the tongue prehension behavior of Ranid frogs. Although the appropriate pattern of the motor activity is determined by motor pattern generators, sensory inputs can modify the ongoing motor execution. Combination of fluorescent tracers were applied to investigate whether there are direct contacts between the afferent fibers of the trigeminal, facial, vestibular, glossopharyngeal-vagal, hypoglossal, second cervical spinal nerves and the hypoglossal motoneurons. Correlates between feeding ecology and mercury levels in historical and modern arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus).

Changes in concentration of pollutants and pathogen distribution can vary among ecotypes (e.g. marine versus terrestrial food resources). This may have important implications for the animals that reside within them. We examined 1) canid pathogen presence in an endangered arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) population and 2) relative total mercury (THg) level as a function of ecotype ('coastal' or 'inland') for arctic foxes to test whether the presence of pathogens or heavy metal concentration correlate with population health. The Bering Sea populations on Bering and Mednyi Islands were compared to Ice

Potential targets aimed at by spitting cobras when deterring predators from attacking.

When threatened, spitting cobras eject venom towards the face of an aggressor. To uncover the relevant cues used by cobras for face recognition we determined how often artificial targets equipped with or without eyes elicited spitting behavior. In addition, we measured whether and how target shape and size influenced the spitting behavior of cobras. Results show that oval- and round-shaped targets were most effective, while triangles with the same surface area as oval 'face like' targets hardly elicited spitting. The likelihood of spitting depended on neither the presence, the spatial arrangem

Why the long face? The mechanics of mandibular symphysis proportions in crocodiles.

BACKGROUND: Crocodilians exhibit a spectrum of rostral shape from long snouted (longirostrine), through to short snouted (brevirostrine) morphologies. The proportional length of the mandibular symphysis correlates consistently with rostral shape, forming as much as 50% of the mandible's length in longirostrine forms, but 10% in brevirostrine crocodilians. Here we analyse the structural consequences of an elongate mandibular symphysis in relation to feeding behaviours. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Simple beam and high resolution Finite Element (FE) models of seven species of crocodile were anal

Protective perfumes: the role of vegetative volatiles in plant defense against herbivores.

Herbivore damage to leaves and other vegetative tissues often stimulates the emission of volatile compounds, suggesting that these substances have a role in plant defense. In fact, ample evidence has accumulated in the last few years indicating that volatiles from vegetative plant parts can directly repel herbivores, such as ovipositing butterflies and host-seeking aphids. Volatiles have also been demonstrated to protect plants by attracting herbivore enemies, such as parasitic wasps, predatory arthropods and possibly even insectivorous birds. Even below ground herbivory results in the release

Prey envenomation does not improve digestive performance in Taiwanese pit vipers (Trimeresurus gracilis and T. stejnegeri stejnegeri).

It has been a common belief that snake venom may help in the digestion of its prey, although direct examples and supporting evidence have not been sufficient. To address this, the present study examined whether preinjecting natural amounts of pit viper venom into experimental mice may accelerate their digestion by the snakes or gain energy benefit as compared to the control without the envenomation. Live adults of two Asian pit viper species Trimeresurus gracilis and T. stejnegeri stejnegeri, which inhabit the cold and warm environment respectively, were the subjects studied herein. A natural

Coevolution of diet and prey-specific venom activity supports the role of selection in snake venom evolution.

The processes that drive the evolution of snake venom variability, particularly the role of diet, have been a topic of intense recent research interest. Here, we test whether extensive variation in venom composition in the medically important viper genus Echis is associated with shifts in diet. Examination of stomach and hindgut contents revealed extreme variation between the major clades of Echis in the proportion of arthropod prey consumed. The toxicity (median lethal dose, LD(50)) of representative Echis venoms to a natural scorpion prey species was found to be strongly associated with the

Brominated flame retardants and other organobromines in Norwegian predatory bird eggs.

A set of 62 unhatched eggs was collected from six different predatory bird species throughout Norway after incubation period was completed. They were analysed for PBDE, PBB, TBBP A and naturally occurring halogenated compounds. BDE 47, 99 and 153 were the dominating congeners, with species dependent PBDE patterns. BDE 153 was observed as the most abundant congener in eggs of peregrine falcon, golden eagle and merlin. The highest PBDE level (sum of nine congeners) was found in eggs of white-tailed sea eagle with up to 800ng/gww (median sumPBDE: 184ng/gww), followed by eggs of peregrine falcon a

The effect of alternative prey on the dynamics of imperfect Batesian and Müllerian mimicries.

Both Batesian and Müllerian mimicries are considered classical evidence of natural selection where predation pressure has, at times, created a striking similarity between unrelated prey species. Batesian mimicry, in which palatable mimics resemble unpalatable aposematic species, is parasitic and only beneficial to the mimics. By contrast, in classical Müllerian mimicry the cost of predators' avoidance learning is shared between similar unpalatable co-mimics, and therefore mimicry benefits all parties. Recent studies using mathematical modeling have questioned the dynamics of Müllerian mimicry,
