Comparison of cytotoxic and apoptosis-inducing effects of MTA, propolis, and propolis-MTA on immature dental pulp stem cells.

BACKGROUND: Pulpotomy is a treatment option for the preservation of pulp vitality in primary teeth with extensive caries. Propolis is a natural resinous substance with optimal antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immune-regulatory properties. Thus, this study aimed to compare the cytotoxic and apoptosis-inducing effects of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), propolis, and MTA-propolis on immature dental pulp stem cells (IDPSCs). METHODS: In this in vitro, experimental study, primary IDPSCs were exposed to propolis, MTA, and MTA-propolis for 24 and 72-h. The cytotoxicity and apoptosis-inducing

Endodontic Treatment of a Traumatic Tusk Fracture With Exposed Pulp in an Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus).

Tusk fracture in elephants is a common incident often resulting in pulp exposure and pulpitis. Extensive lavage, endodontic therapy, direct pulp capping, or extraction are treatment options. In this report, the successful management of a broken tusk of a juvenile male Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) including morphological analysis of the tusk tip 2 years after surgery are presented. Treatment was carried out under barn conditions and included antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and partial pulpotomy with direct pulp capping. Immediate pain relief was reached. The fractured tusk was preserved

Ferric sulfate versus dilute formocresol in pulpotomized primary molars: long-term follow up.

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of ferric sulfate (FS) to that of dilute formocresol (DFC) as pulp dressing agents in pulpotomized primary molars. Ninety-six primary molars in 72 children were treated by a conventional pulpotomy technique. Fifty-eight teeth were treated by a FS solution for 15 sec, rinsed, and covered by zinc oxide-eugenol paste (ZOE). In another 38 teeth, a cotton pellet moistened with 20% DFC was placed for 5 min, removed, and the pulp stumps were covered by ZOE paste. The teeth of both groups were sealed by a second layer of intermediate restorative material

Bilateral Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis Secondary to Dental Infection-Induced Sinusitis: A Case Report.

Cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST) is a rare but severe condition that often arises as a complication of head and facial infections. Sinusitis, particularly involving the sphenoid or ethmoid sinuses, is a common precursor. A five-year-old boy presented to the pediatric intensive care unit with fever, ear pain, and eyelid swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed rare bilateral CST with significant intracranial arterial narrowing. Cultures from the ear grew Fusobacterium necrophorum. Subsequent dental examination identified multiple untreated carious lesions, pulpal necrosis, and abscesses. C

Monoradicular Primary Maxillary Left Second Molar: A Rare Root Morphology and Review of the Literature.

Understanding the anatomical variations between primary and permanent dentitions and familiarity with the internal and external root morphology are essential for dental practitioners to distinguish root morphological anomalies. A search in dental literature reveals the occurrence of monoradicular molars in primary dentition; especially the monoradicular maxillary primary second molar is extremely rare, returning only five case reports. The present case of a 5-year-and-7-month-old girl presented with experience of severe pain in her upper left back area. After taking the medical and dental hist

Comparison of bioactive material failure rates in vital pulp treatment of permanent matured teeth - a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is the gold standard for vital pulp treatment (VPT), but its superiority over novel calcium silicate-based cements in permanent teeth lacks systematic evidence. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of these materials in VPT through a network meta-analysis. A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science until January 20, 2024. The inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials involving VPT with biomaterials and reversible or irreversible pulpitis diagnoses in mature permanent teeth. The primary outcome was t

Adaptive instrumentation of root canals in primary teeth using XP-endo shaper: a case series.

Dental caries is indeed the biggest cause of tooth loss, particularly in the primary dentition. In primary teeth with carious pulp involvements, endodontic intervention in the form of pulpotomy (removal of only the coronal pulp) or pulpectomy (removal of coronal and radicular pulp) is advocated. Pulpectomy can be laborious and time-consuming, especially when using traditional hand endodontic files to shape root canals. In paediatric dentistry, motorised nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary instrumentation has proved significant in enhancing the quality of pulpectomy. In primary dentition, however, t

Dental disease in type 3 Von Willebrand disease: a neglected problem.

Type 3 Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a rare, severe, autosomal recessive bleeding disorder. In our institution, we follow 17 children with type 3 VWD. We have observed a high prevalence of dental disease in these patients prompting us to undertake a retrospective review of our cohort of patients with type 3 VWD to catalogue the extent of their dental disease. Sixteen of these patients have been assessed by our dentistry department. Five children have undergone minor dental procedures (e.g. restorations, stainless steel crowns) and seven major procedures (e.g. dental extractions, pulpotomies

Is there life after Buckley's Formocresol? Part I -- a narrative review of alternative interventions and materials.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To present a narrative review of the currently available alternative interventions and materials to formocresol pulpotomy for the management of extensive caries in the primary molar, and (2) to produce a clinical protocol for pulp therapy techniques in the extensively carious primary molar. INTRODUCTION: The International Agency for Research on Cancer has recently classified formaldehyde as carcinogenic to human beings. Since Buckley's Formocresol contains 19% formaldehyde in its full strength and, therefore, 1% in a 20% dilution, a safer alternative should be identified. MET

Considerations for the direct pulp capping procedure in primary teeth: a review of the literature.

In reviewing the various studies concerning the direct pulp capping procedure in primary teeth, using rigid criteria for case selection and procedure appears to insure a significant amount of success. It is acknowledged that vital primary pulp tissue is capable of healing without resorting to complete pulpectomy, although statistically direct pulp capping has been found to be less successful in primary teeth than indirect pulp therapy or coronal amputation (pulpotomy). To achieve success for direct pulp capping in primary teeth, the considerations involve: selecting teeth with minimal or no cl

Management strategies for pulpitis in vital permanent teeth in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

PURPOSE: Vital pulp treatment (VPT), including pulp capping and pulpotomy, is a conservative approach designed to maintain pulp vitality and health in reversible and partially irreversible pulpitis cases, particularly in children and adolescents with immature or mature permanent teeth. Despite extensive research, the comparation of various VPTs remains uncertain. This study evaluated the efficacy of different VPT techniques and capping materials, including calcium hydroxide (CH), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and other pulp-protecting agents (PPA), and explored heterogeneity across trials,

Dens evaginatus: literature review, pathophysiology, and comprehensive treatment regimen.

Dens evaginatus (DE) is an uncommon dental anomaly, having been well documented since 1925. It occurs primarily in people of Asian descent and is exhibited by protrusion of a tubercle from occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth, and lingual surfaces of anterior teeth. Tubercles have an enamel layer covering a dentin core containing a thin extension of pulp. These cusp-like protrusions are susceptible to pulp exposure from wear or fracture because of malocclusion, leading to pulpal complications soon after eruption. Endodontic intervention of permanent teeth with immature roots is unpredic for in

Treatment of the endodontic emergency: a decade later.

A questionnaire was sent to diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics to determine changing trends in the treatment of endodontic emergencies since Dorn's survey 10 yr ago. There is a definitely greater trend toward complete instrumentation of the root canals to the apex regardless of the emergency condition than there was a decade ago. The number of respondents who leave teeth open when the pulp is nonvital has dropped dramatically in the past decade. When there is no periapical involvement, over one third of the respondents are completing treatment in one visit. A decrease in the use o

Development of a method to detect and quantify prostaglandin E2 in pulpal blood from cariously exposed, vital primary molar teeth.

AIM: The aim of this in vitro study was to detect and quantify an established marker of inflammation, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), in blood samples harvested from radicular pulp stumps after coronal pulp amputation. METHODOLOGY: Harvesting was achieved by a paper strip 'dip-stick' method and the volume of each sample estimated before storage at -80 degrees C. A competitive, plate-based enzyme immunoassay technique (EIA) was developed for detection and quantification of the inflammatory mediator assumed to be present in blood samples. Since this technique had not previously been used to assess pul
