Draft genome sequence, and a sequence-defined genetic linkage map of the legume crop species Lupinus angustifolius L.

Lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) is the most recently domesticated crop in major agricultural cultivation. Its seeds are high in protein and dietary fibre, but low in oil and starch. Medical and dietetic studies have shown that consuming lupin-enriched food has significant health benefits. We report the draft assembly from a whole genome shotgun sequencing dataset for this legume species with 26.9x coverage of the genome, which is predicted to contain 57,807 genes. Analysis of the annotated genes with metabolic pathways provided a partial understanding of some key features of lupin, such as th

High-fructose diet elevates myocardial superoxide generation in mice in the absence of cardiac hypertrophy.

OBJECTIVE: Dietary fructose intake has increased considerably in recent decades and this has been paralleled by an increase in the incidence of insulin resistance, especially in children and adolescents. The impact of a high-fructose diet on the myocardium is not fully understood. The aims of this study were to characterize the murine metabolic and cardiac phenotypes associated with a high-fructose diet and to determine whether this diet imparts differential effects with age. METHODS: Juvenile (4 wk) and adult (14 wk) C57Bl/6 mice were fed a 60% fructose diet or isoenergetic control (starch)

Microbial short-chain fatty acids: a bridge between dietary fibers and poultry gut health - A review.

The maintenance of poultry gut health is complex depending on the intricate balance among diet, the commensal microbiota, and the mucosa, including the gut epithelium and the superimposing mucus layer. Changes in microflora composition and abundance can confer beneficial or detrimental effects on fowl. Antibiotics have devastating impacts on altering the landscape of gut microbiota, which further leads to antibiotic resistance or spread the pathogenic populations. By eliciting the landscape of gut microbiota, strategies should be made to break down the regulatory signals of pathogenic bacteria

Roles and mechanisms of Pueraria lobata radix in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The root of Pueraria montana var. lobata (Willd.) Ohwi, known as Pueraria lobata radix (PLR), is a medicinal and edible herb. In traditional Chinese medicine, PLR has historically been revered for its efficacy in "generating fluids to quench thirst" to treat metabolic disorders such as wasting-thirst syndrome (diabetes) and for its ability to alleviate alcohol intoxication. These traditional applications parallel the modern management of metabolic dysfunction and liver injury, providing an ethnopharmacological basis for its use in treating metabolic dysfunction-

Exploring virulence and stress response in Entamoeba histolytica: insights from clinical strains.

Amebiasis, caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica, is a significant parasitic infection affecting millions of people worldwide, particularly in developing regions. Elucidating the mechanisms by which this parasite invades host tissues and circumvents immune defenses is essential for advancing therapeutic strategies. Key virulence factors such as Gal/GalNAc lectin, amebapore, and proteases enable the parasite to adhere to, invade, and destroy host tissues. This study aimed to identify novel virulence-related genes in clinical E. histolytica strains by analyzing their gene expression prof

Type 2 polysaccharide storage myopathy in Quarter Horses is a novel glycogen storage disease causing exertional rhabdomyolysis.

BACKGROUND: Both type 1 (PSSM1) and type 2 polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM2) are characterised by aggregates of abnormal polysaccharide in skeletal muscle. Whereas the genetic basis for PSSM1 is known (R309H GYS1), the cause of PSSM2 in Quarter Horses (PSSM2-QH) is unknown and glycogen concentrations not defined. OBJECTIVES: To characterise the histopathological and biochemical features of PSSM2-QH and determine if an associated monogenic variant exists in genes known to cause glycogenosis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case control. METHODS: Sixty-four PSSM2-QH, 30 PSSM1-QH and 185 con

Hyperoxic ventilation at the critical hematocrit: effects on myocardial perfusion and function.

BACKGROUND: Hemodilution reduces hematocrit (Hct) and blood oxygen content. Tissue oxygenation is mainly preserved by increased cardiac output. As myocardial O2-demands increase, coronary vasodilatation becomes necessary to increase myocardial blood flow. Myocardial ischemia occurs at a critical Hct-value (Hctcrit), with accompanying exhaustion of coronary reserve. Hyperoxic ventilation is known to both reverse peripheral tissue hypoxia at Hctcrit and also to induce coronary vasoconstriction. This study aimed to determine whether hyperoxic ventilation at Hctcrit further exacerbates myocardial

Wilson's disease-associated gut dysbiosis: novel insights into microbial functional alterations, virulence changes, and resistance markers.

BACKGROUND: Although the gut microbiota is associated with a variety of metabolic, inflammatory, and neurological disorders through microbial dysbiosis, current studies on the gut microbiota in Wilson's disease (WD) remain limited. Critical gaps exist in understanding the roles of key functional microbial factors in WD pathogenesis, which hinders the acquisition of mechanistic insights into this disease. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize alterations in the gut microbiome associated with WD, with a particular emphasis on virulence factors (VFs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs),

Prebiotic dietary fibers, gut microbiota, and short-chain fatty acid production: from fermentation mechanisms to clinical translation.

The importance of the gut microbiota in regulating host homeostasis, immune responses, metabolism, and dietary interactions is increasingly recognized. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), microbial metabolites produced through the fermentation of dietary substrates, play a central role in mediating these interactions. Drawing on mechanistic evidence from in vivo studies and insights from in vitro host-microbe fermentation models, this review critically examines how prebiotic dietary fibers have influenced the human gut microbial ecosystem, fermentation pathways, and SCFA production over the past

In-situ synergistic mechanism of wetting and biomineralization in a polymeric surfactant-based microbial composite dust suppressant for dust control in open-pit mines.

Open-pit coal mining produces massive coal dust and has intensified dust pollution. Chemical suppressants have short retention times and poor consolidation, while microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) provides long-term consolidation, a mismatch between rapid moisture loss and slow biomineralization creates a persistent "dust suppression gap." To address these issues, this study developed a novel chemical-microbial composite dust suppressant by integrating sodium starch octenyl succinate (SSOS, a polymeric surfactant), sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), and centrifuged Sporosa
