Gestational exposure to valproic acid (VPA) is known to cause behavioral deficits of sociability, matching similar alterations in human autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Available data are scarce on the neuromorphological changes in VPA-exposed animals. Here, we focused on alterations of the dopaminergic system, which is implicated in motivation and reward, with relevance to social cohesion. Whole brains from 7-day-old mice born to mothers given a single injection of VPA (400 mg/kg b.wt.) on E13.5 were immunostained against tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). They were scanned using the iDISCO method wit

BACKGROUND: Studies using the stress-appraisal-coping model to examine caregiving in schizophrenia and mood disorders are limited.
AIM: This study attempted to examine psychological distress among caregivers of persons with schizophrenia and mood disorders using the framework of the stress-coping theory. The impact of illness-related stressors and caregiver-related factors on caregiver-distress was also explored.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 176 of the 238 selected outpatients with remitted schizophrenia, bipolar and recurrent depressive disorders identified over a 1-year period u

Psychiatric disorders arise due to an interplay of genetic and environmental factors, including stress. Studies in rodents have shown that mutants for Disrupted-In-Schizophrenia-1 (DISC1), a well-accepted genetic risk factor for mental illness, display abnormal behaviours in response to stress, but the mechanisms through which DISC1 affects stress responses remain poorly understood. Using two lines of zebrafish homozygous mutant for disc1, we investigated behaviour and functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis, the fish equivalent of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HP

Cognitive behavior group therapy (CBGT) is effective for social anxiety disorder (SAD), but a substantial proportion of patients do not typically achieve normative functioning. Cognitive behavioral models of SAD emphasize negative self-imagery as an important maintaining factor, and evidence suggests that imagery is a powerful cognitive mode for facilitating affective change. This study will compare two group CBGT interventions, one that predominantly uses verbally-based strategies (VB-CBGT) and another that predominantly uses imagery-enhanced strategies (IE-CBGT), in terms of (a) efficacy, (b

BACKGROUND: In a rapidly urbanizing world, many people have little contact with natural environments, which may affect health and well-being. Existing reviews generally conclude that residential greenspace is beneficial to health. However, the processes generating these benefits and how they can be best promoted remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: During an Expert Workshop held in September 2016, the evidence linking greenspace and health was reviewed from a transdisciplinary standpoint, with a particular focus on potential underlying biopsychosocial pathways and how these can be explored and organiz

The abduction of children in armed conflict is a pervasive global problem with severe physical and psychological consequences. Such traumatic events affect not only children and their families but also the clinicians responsible for supporting recovery. This study examines the subjective experiences and coping strategies of clinicians in Israel who worked with children, adolescents, and their caregivers immediately after release from war captivity. Data were drawn from in-depth interviews with 37 clinicians, including social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, and pediatricians, com

BACKGROUND: Migrants from high to low tuberculosis (TB) incidence countries may benefit from screening for latent TB infection (LTBI), but the optimal approaches and effectiveness are not well described.
METHODS: Our primary objective was to synthesise evidence for cost-effectiveness, and barriers and facilitators to successful implementation, of LTBI screening programmes for migrants entering high income, low TB burden countries. Evidence was synthesised using rapid review methodologies.
RESULTS: 41 studies (including 2 reviews) were included, covering the European region and national progr

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a multisensory experience most often associated with feelings of relaxation and altered consciousness, elicited by stimuli which include whispering, repetitive movements, and close personal attention. Since 2015, ASMR research has grown rapidly, spanning disciplines from neuroscience to media studies but lacking a collaborative or interdisciplinary approach. To build a cohesive and connected structure for ASMR research moving forwards, a modified Delphi study was conducted with ASMR experts, practitioners, community members, and researchers from v

BACKGROUND: Family-based treatment (FBT) is a front-line empirically supported intervention for adolescent anorexia nervosa, but it is often inaccessible to families from lower income backgrounds, as it is most typically available in specialty research and private practice settings. In preparation for a pilot trial of FBT delivered in the home setting, this study qualitatively examined provider perceptions of implementing FBT in lower-income communities.
METHODS: Eating disorder clinicians working in community clinics (therapists, medical doctors, dietitians, and social workers; n = 9) were i

Family interventions have been shown to be effective for adolescents with behavior problems. Current literature supports both adaptive treatments and technology-assisted interventions as highly promising innovations for treating at-risk adolescents. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and test the efficacy of a computer-assisted version of an established office-based multicomponent family therapy. Eighty Hispanic and Black Non-Hispanic adolescents and their families participated in the study and were randomized to either Immediate Computer-Assisted CIFFTA or Delayed Computer-Assis

In recent years this society has heard of the plight of people with spina bifida who have graduated from childrens' to adult services, and of the lack of cohesive medical and counselling services offered to them. In the Manchester area, a joint clinic for adults has recently been set up, consisting of a Neurosurgeon, Nephrologist and Clinical Psychologist. Patients attending are those who attended the joint paediatric clinic who are now 16+ and new referrals from GPs and other consultants. 30 people of appropriate age to attend the clinic were identified, and these were contacted by mail to in

Colombia's history of colonization and subjugation of Black and Indigenous peoples has created a socially stratified society where colorism, the favoring of lighter skin tones over darker ones, persists. In such societies, individuals with darker skin are at greater risk for ethnoracial discrimination and poorer psychosocial adjustment. Adolescents must navigate this context while developing their own ethnic-racial identities (ERIs). This tension warrants exploration into their identity development processes and adjustment; however, these ideas have been understudied in the Global South. Impor

OBJECTIVE: We examined how informal rotating savings and credit associations influence food purchasing and nutrition-related behaviors in urban communities with low income, and we explored their potential as platforms for adding nutrition value to purchasing decisions and behavior change interventions.
DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative realist evaluation guided by an Initial Programme Theory. We analyzed interview and focus group discussion data thematically to identify context-mechanism-outcome configurations shaping decision-making and food choices.
SETTING: Two urban communities with low

Liver diseases constitute the fifth leading cause of death in Mexico, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is one of the main causes. MASLD, formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is estimated to affect one in three adults worldwide, and limited evidence suggests that its prevalence in Mexico may approach 50%. Social and commercial determinants of health are key drivers of this situation, and genetic susceptibility also appears to play a notable role. MASLD is increasingly recognized as a condition requiring multidisciplinary collaboration

We propose a transdiagnostic approach that centers on modes, state-like manifestations of personality that function as cohesive organizational units. Modes are characterized by specific profiles of affects, behaviors, cognitions, and desires that tend to be coactivated. Each mode is typically experienced as having its own distinct experiential and agentic qualities. A mode-based approach to psychopathology builds on recent analytic and methodological developments which demonstrate the value of modeling personality states dynamically, as well as on longstanding theoretical and empirical traditi

BACKGROUND: Lasting regret after gender-affirming surgery (GAS) is a difficult multifaceted clinical scenario with profound effects on individual well-being as well as being a politically charged topic. Currently, there are no professional guidelines or standards of care to help providers and patients navigate this entity. This article summarizes the authors' Transgender Health Program's cohesive multidisciplinary lifespan approach to mitigate, evaluate, and treat any form of temporary or permanent regret after GAS.

BACKGROUND: The burden of diabetes and cardiovascular risk is not uniform across the USA, with much of this disparity tracking differences in socioeconomic status, cultural practices and lifestyle. To further evaluate disparities in these disorders, we assessed the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia in an Old Order Amish community that is characterized by distinctive sociocultural practices that include a very cohesive social structure and limited use of modern technologies and medications. We compared prevalence of these conditions with that of the overall US popul

IMPORTANCE: While the association between economic connectedness and social mobility has now been documented, the potential linkage between community-level economic connectedness and population health outcomes remains unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between community social capital measures (defined as economic connectedness, social cohesion, and civic engagement) and population health outcomes (defined across prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, kidney disease, and obesity).

BACKGROUND: Citizen-led accountability initiatives are a critical strategy for redressing the causes of health inequalities and promoting better health system governance. A growing body of evidence points to the need for putting power relations at the forefront of understanding and operationalizing citizen-led accountability, rather than technical tools and best practices. In this study, we apply a network lens to the question of how initiatives build collective power to redress health system failures affecting marginalized communities in three municipalities in Guatemala.
METHODS: Network ma
