Physalis angulata: A New Natural Host of Tomato chlorosis virus in Brazil.

Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) and Tomato infectious chlorosis virus (TICV) are the two Solanaceae-infecting Crinivirus species (family Closteroviridae) of worldwide importance. In Brazil, only ToCV has been detected under natural conditions infecting tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum), and potato (S. tuberosum), causing foliar chlorosis (1, 3). However, there are no formal reports of alternative weed hosts of ToCV. During crop surveys in Capão Bonito, São Paulo State, Brazil (May 2011), a high incidence (above 20%) of plants of the weed, cut leaf ground cherry (Physa

Dipeptide IF prevents the effects of hypertension-induced Alzheimer's disease on long-term memory in the cortex of spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Hypertension (HTN) is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions; it can damage blood vessels and rupture blood vessels can trap in small vessels. This blockage can prevent blood flow and oxygen delivery to brain cells and can result in Alzheimer's disease (AD). HTN- and AD-mediated long-time memory loss and its treatment remain poorly understood. Plant-derived natural compounds are alternative solutions for effectively treating diseases without any side effects. This study revealed that bioactive peptides extracted from potato hydrolysis suppress HTN-mediated long-term memory (LTM) loss and

Characterization, comparative genomics, and metabolome analysis of Streptomyces tuberiscabiei sp. nov., a novel actinomycete causing potato scab disease in Long Khot, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand.

Three actinomycete strains, WSLK1-3T, WSLK1-4, and WSLK1-5, associated with scabby potato tuber, were characterized using polyphasic and genome-based taxonomy. All strains were found to be Gram-stain-positive, filamentous bacteria, including LL-diaminopimelic acid in cell-wall peptidoglycan. Whole-cell sugars were glucose, mannose, rhamnose, and ribose. MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H10) were major menaquinones; C16:0, isoC16:0, anteiso-C15:0, and anteiso-C17:0 were major cellular fatty acids; diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylinositol mannoside were m

Dietary patterns and breast cancer risk: a study in 2 cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for a role of dietary risk factors in the cause of breast cancer has been inconsistent. The evaluation of overall dietary patterns instead of foods in isolation may better reflect the nature of true dietary exposure in a population. OBJECTIVE: We used 2 cohort studies to identify and confirm associations between dietary patterns and breast cancer risk. DESIGN: Dietary patterns were derived by using a principal components factor analysis in 1097 breast cancer cases and an age-stratified subcohort of 3320 women sampled from 39,532 female participants in the Canadian Study

Long-term induction of defense gene expression in potato by pseudomonas sp. LBUM223 and streptomyces scabies.

Streptomyces scabies is a causal agent of common scab of potato, which generates necrotic tuber lesions. We have previously demonstrated that inoculation of potato plants with phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA)- producing Pseudomonas sp. LBUM223 could significantly reduce common scab symptoms. In the present study, we investigated whether LBUM223 or an isogenic phzC- mutant not producing PCA could elicit an induced systemic resistance response in potato. The expression of eight defense-related genes (salicylic acid [SA]-related ChtA, PR-1b, PR-2, and PR-5; and jasmonic acid and ethylene-related

Potato consumption, by preparation method and meal quality, with blood pressure and body mass index: The INTERMAP study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies have reported associations between higher potato intake and higher blood pressure (BP) and/or risk of hypertension and obesity. These studies rarely considered preparation methods of potatoes, overall dietary pattern or the nutrient quality of the meals. These factors may affect the association of potato intake with BP and body mass index (BMI). This study investigated potato consumption by amount, type of processing, overall dietary pattern, and nutrient quality of the meals in relation to BP and BMI. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses were conducted amon

Potato tuber proteins efficiently inhibit human faecal proteolytic activity: implications for treatment of peri-anal dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Frequent diarrhoea after intestinal resections and faecal incontinence in healthy infants may lead to perianal injury. A causative agent may be a high concentration of pancreatic proteases in faeces. The aim of the present study was to assess whether protease inhibitors are applicable for treating and preventing peri-anal dermatitis by inhibiting the initial cause of the inflammation, the faecal proteases. DESIGN: Proteolytic activity was estimated in faeces of subjects frequently suffering from peri-anal dermatitis: patients with intestinal resections and healthy infants. The dev

Genomic diversity of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora and its correlation with virulence.

We used genetic and biochemical methods to examine the genomic diversity of the enterobacterial plant pathogen Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora. The results obtained with each method showed that E. carotovora subsp. carotovora strains isolated from one ecological niche, potato plants, are surprisingly diverse compared to related pathogens. A comparison of 23 partial mdh sequences revealed a maximum pairwise difference of 10.49% and an average pairwise difference of 2.13%, values which are much greater than the maximum variation (1.81%) and average variation (0.75%) previously reported for

Contact urticaria and protein contact dermatitis in the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases in a period of 12 years.

BACKGROUND: Although occupational contact urticaria (CU) and protein contact dermatitis (PCD) are considered frequent among workers with exposure to proteinaceous materials, data on occupations at risk and the main causes of these occupational skin diseases are relatively limited. OBJECTIVES: To report the causative agents and risk occupations for CU and PCD in the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases (FROD). METHODS: We retrieved from the FROD all recognized cases of CU/PCD in the years 2005-2016. RESULTS: With 570 cases, CU and PCD constituted 11% of all recognized cases of occupatio

Greenhouse and field cultivations of antigen-expressing potatoes focusing on the variability in plant constituents and antigen expression.

The production of plant-derived pharmaceuticals essentially requires stable concentrations of plant constituents, especially recombinant proteins; nonetheless, soil and seasonal variations might drastically interfere with this stability. In addition, variability might depend on the plant organ used for production. Therefore, we investigated the variability in plant constituents and antigen expression in potato plants under greenhouse and field growth conditions and in leaves compared to tubers. Using potatoes expressing VP60, the only structural capsid protein of the rabbit haemorrhagic diseas

Potato-Resistant Starch Supplementation Improves Microbiota Dysbiosis, Inflammation, and Gut-Brain Signaling in High Fat-Fed Rats.

(1) High-fat (HF) diet leads to gut microbiota dysbiosis which is associated with systemic inflammation. Bacterial-driven inflammation is sufficient to alter vagally mediated satiety and induce hyperphagia. Promoting bacterial fermentation improves gastrointestinal (GI) epithelial barrier function and reduces inflammation. Resistant starch escape digestion and can be fermented by bacteria in the distal gut. Therefore, we hypothesized that potato RS supplementation in HF-fed rats would lead to compositional changes in microbiota composition associated with improved inflammatory status and vagal

SHEsisPlus, a toolset for genetic studies on polyploid species.

Currently, algorithms and softwares for genetic analysis of diploid organisms with bi-allelic markers are well-established, while those for polyploids are limited. Here, we present SHEsisPlus, the online algorithm toolset for both dichotomous and quantitative trait genetic analysis on polyploid species (compatible with haploids and diploids, too). SHEsisPlus is also optimized for handling multiple-allele datasets. It's free, open source and also designed to perform a range of analyses, including haplotype inference, linkage disequilibrium analysis, epistasis detection, Hardy-Weinberg equilibri

A "Whirly" transcription factor is required for salicylic acid-dependent disease resistance in Arabidopsis.

Transcriptional reprogramming is critical for plant disease resistance responses; its global control is not well understood. Salicylic acid (SA) can induce plant defense gene expression and a long-lasting disease resistance state called systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Plant-specific "Whirly" DNA binding proteins were previously implicated in defense gene regulation. We demonstrate that the potato StWhy1 protein is a transcriptional activator of genes containing the PBF2 binding PB promoter element. DNA binding activity of AtWhy1, the Arabidopsis StWhy1 ortholog, is induced by SA and is req

Preparation of chitosan/curcumin nanoparticles based zein and potato starch composite films for Schizothorax prenati fillet preservation.

The aim of this study was to develop a zein/potato starch (PS) film based on chitosan nanoparticles incorporated with curcumin (CCN). The CCN film was characterized for encapsulation efficiency, particle size, zeta potential, polydispersity index (PDI), relative release, and DPPH radical scavenging test. Our results showed that the CCN encapsulated effectively curcumin (CUR) (84.8% ± 1.1%) and presented with high oxidation resistance and relative release efficiency. The CCN/zein/PS composite films were round, smooth, and compact. We measured and compared the mechanical properties, oxygen perme

Activation of defense against Phytophthora infestans in potato by down-regulation of syntaxin gene expression.

The oomycete Phytophthora infestans is the causal agent of late blight, the most devastating disease of potato. The importance of vesicle fusion processes and callose deposition for defense of potato against Phytophthora infestans was analyzed. Transgenic plants were generated, which express RNA interference constructs targeted against plasma membrane-localized SYNTAXIN-RELATED 1 (StSYR1) and SOLUBLE N-ETHYLMALEIMIDE-SENSITIVE FACTOR ADAPTOR PROTEIN 33 (StSNAP33), the potato homologs of Arabidopsis AtSYP121 and AtSNAP33, respectively. Phenotypically, transgenic plants grew normally, but showed

Purification and cDNA cloning of a wound inducible glucosyltransferase active toward 12-hydroxy jasmonic acid.

Tuberonic acid (12-hydroxy epi-jasmonic acid, TA) and its glucoside (TAG) were isolated from potato leaflets (Solanumtuberosum L.) and shown to have tuber-inducing properties. The metabolism of jasmonic acid (JA) to TAG in plant leaflets, and translocation of the resulting TAG to the distal parts, was demonstrated in a previous study. It is thought that TAG generated from JA transmits a signal from the damaged parts to the undamaged parts by this mechanism. In this report, the metabolism of TA in higher plants was demonstrated using [12-(3)H]TA, and a glucosyltransferase active toward TA was p

Single and double overexpression of C(4)-cycle genes had differential effects on the pattern of endogenous enzymes, attenuation of photorespiration and on contents of UV protectants in transgenic potato and tobacco plants.

To improve the efficiency of CO(2) fixation in C(3) photosynthesis, C(4)-cycle genes were overexpressed in potato and tobacco plants either individually or in combination. Overexpression of the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) gene (ppc) from Corynebacterium glutamicum (cppc) or from potato (stppc, deprived of the phosphorylation site) in potato resulted in a 3-6-fold induction of endogenous cytosolic NADP malic enzyme (ME) and an increase in the activities of NAD-ME (3-fold), NADP isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), pyruvate kinase (PK), NADP glycerate-3-P dehydrogenase (NADP-GAPDH), and P

First Report of Streptomyces stelliscabiei Causing Potato Common Scab in Michigan.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) common scab can be caused by multiple Streptomyces spp., with S. scabies as a predominant species (2,3). However, according to our survey in August 2007, many symptomatic potato tubers did not have S. scabies in Michigan. To identify the pathogen, potato tubers with scab symptoms were collected from two fields in Michigan, and Streptomyces spp. were isolated using Streptomyces selective medium (STR) (2). Pure cultures of the isolates were obtained by transferring single colonies and incubation at 28°C on STR. Three isolates, designated HER21, HER24, and HER26, wer
