Exploring the impact of lipid metabolism in mammalian oocytes and its implications for assisted reproductive technology outcomes.

In assisted reproductive technolog, both invasive and non-invasive criteria are widely used to identify oocytes and embryos with high developmental potential, with the ultimate goal of improving live birth rates. Since the earliest applications of in vitro fertilization in the 1970s, non-invasive assessment methods have played a central role in evaluating oocyte and embryo competence. These approaches rely primarily on morphological analysis, in-cluding assessment of the mature cumulus-oocyte com-plex (COC), the presence and morphology of the first polar body, zona pellucida thickness, charact

Bioactivity and Molecular Responses of Bitter Gourd Leaf Extracts Against the Invasive Leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii (Diptera: Agromyzidae).

Liriomyza trifolii is a global pest of vegetables and ornamental plants and a major invasive species in China. Long-term irrational use of chemical insecticides has reduced control efficacy, driving interest in plant-derived alternatives. Bitter gourd, Momordica charantia, extracts show potential against various pests, but their effects on L. trifolii are unknown. To address this, host suitability tests were first conducted and revealed that L. trifolii exhibited significantly higher adaptability to kidney bean than to bitter gourd in terms of both oviposition and feeding, and failed to comple

Characterization of Escherichia coli pathogenicity and drug resistance in yolk peritonitis.

Yolk Peritonitis can lead to a rapid decline in egg production, which seriously affects the health of laying hens and the profitability of chicken farms. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the most common cause of yolk peritonitis in laying hens. In this study, bacterial samples were collected from the ovaries and fallopian tubes of laying hens with suspected yolk peritonitis from a laying farm in Jiangsu Province, and their pathogenicity and drug resistance were investigated. Initially, morphological and biochemical detection methods were employed to isolate and identify the pathogenic bacteria. T

The Potential Role of MicroRNA-124-3p in Growth, Development, and Reproduction of Schistosoma japonicum.

The microRNA-124-3p plays an important role in regulating development and neurogenesis. Previous microRNA sequencing analyses of Schistosoma japonicum revealed sja-miR-124-3p differential expression patterns in schistosomes from different hosts and at different developmental stages. This study explores the regulatory role of sja-miR-124-3p in S. japonicum development and reproduction. Quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) showed that the expression level of sja-miR-124-3p in S. japonicum from resistant hosts, such as Microtus fortis, and unsuitable hosts, such as rats and water buff

Air sac trematodes: Morishitium polonicum as a newly identified cause of death in the common blackbird (Turdus merula).

Necropsy of two free-ranging common blackbirds (Turdus merula) found dead in central Italy revealed the presence of a high number of cyclocoelid flukes in the coelomatic cavity. Cyclocoelid flukes primarily infect avian respiratory system. Histologically, air sac walls were covered with a fibrinous exudate containing degenerate heterophils, many trematodes and some colonies of Gram-positive cocci. The superficial bronchi and parabronchi were markedly distended, and the adjacent pulmonary parenchyma was congested and collapsed. Trematodes, surrounded by a mild suppurative to pyogranulomatous in

A New Species of Pentaloculum (Cestoda: "Tetraphyllidea") from the Taiwan Saddled Carpetshark, Cirrhoscyllium formosanum (Orectolobiformes: Parascylliidae).

Collection of cestodes from the Taiwan saddled carpetshark, Cirrhoscyllium formosanum, for the first time led to the discovery of Pentaloculum hoi n. sp. This species provided important insights into the identity of the heretofore monotypic Pentaloculum-known previously only from the blind electric ray, Typhlonarke aysoni, in New Zealand. The new species differs from Pentaloculum macrocephalum in testis number, vitelline follicle and cirrus sac configuration, and in that it is hyperapolytic rather than euapolytic. Maximum-likelihood analysis of sequence data generated for the D1-D3 region of t

New circumscription of freshwater fish parasites Monobothrium diesing, 1863 and Promonobothrium mackiewicz, 1968 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea) using morphological and molecular evidence.

Two genera of caryophyllidean cestodes, Monobothrium Diesing, 1863 and Promonobothrium Mackiewicz, 1968 , from cypriniform fishes (cyprinids and suckers) in the Holarctic Region, are revised using morphological and molecular evidence. Monobothrium, which includes morphologically distinct species that occur in European cyprinids (Cyprinidae) and North American suckers (Catostomidae), is separated into 3 genera. Monobothrium becomes monotypic and is represented by its type species, Monobothrium wageneri Nybelin, 1922 , which occurs in European tench, Tinca tinca (Cyprinidae). Monobothrium auricu

The use of thiamine and thiamine antagonists to investigate the etiology of early mortality syndrome in lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush).

Early mortality syndrome (EMS) is a non-infectious disease affecting lake trout and other salmonids in the Great Lakes and in inland lakes. It is characterised by loss of equilibrium, hyperexcitability, anorexia, and eventually death. EMS is associated with low thiamine and treatment of eggs or fry with thiamine-HCl eliminates symptoms and mortality. To verify the role of the active form of the vitamin as the prophylactic agent, we used thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) to reverse EMS symptoms. We also investigated the ability of specific thiamine antagonists that either block TPP production or int

Postoperative ileo-ileal intussusception following surgical resection of patent omphalomesenteric duct.

A female neonate with patent omphalomesenteric duct was treated by ductal excision. Six days following surgery, she developed vomiting and abdominal distension. On plain radiographs, distended bowel loops with multiple, air-fluid levels consistent with an intestinal obstruction were evident. Sonography demonstrated an ileo-ileal intussusception. At surgery, a 3-cm, ileo-ileal intussusception was noted proximal to the previous Lembert suture site and was manually reduced. Awareness of the possibility of small-bowel intussusception following surgery was critical to ensuring prompt and successful

Left Atrial Ligation in the Avian Embryo as a Model for Altered Hemodynamic Loading During Early Vascular Development.

Due to its four-chambered mature ventricular configuration, ease of culture, imaging access, and efficiency, the avian embryo is a preferred vertebrate animal model for studying cardiovascular development. Studies aiming to understand the normal development and congenital heart defect prognosis widely adopt this model. Microscopic surgical techniques are introduced to alter the normal mechanical loading patterns at a specific embryonic time point and track the downstream molecular and genetic cascade. The most common mechanical interventions are left vitelline vein ligation, conotruncal bandin

Diversity and phylogenetic relationships of 'tetraphyllidean' Clade 3 (Cestoda) based on new material from orectolobiform sharks in Australia and Taiwan.

In an effort to expand knowledge of Clade 3-one of the ten clades that compose the non-monophyletic order 'Tetraphyllidea' all current members of which parasitise orectolobiform sharks-we targeted species of orectolobiform sharks that had not previously been examined for 'tetraphyllidean' cestodes. That work led to the discovery of three new species off Australia and Taiwan. Ambitalveolus gen. n. was erected to accommodate these species. Ambitalveolus costelloae gen. n. et sp. n., Ambitalveolus kempi sp. n., and Ambitalveolus penghuensis sp. n. differ from one another in scolex size, genital p

Interactions between the intestinal cestode Polyonchobothrium clarias (Pseudophyllidea: Ptychobothriidae) from the African sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus and heavy metal pollutants in an aquatic environment in Egypt.

In an aquatic environment, there is a profound and inverse relationship between environmental quality and disease status of fish. Parasites are one of the most serious limiting factors in aquaculture. Therefore, the present investigation was carried out during the period of February-December 2014 to determine the parasitic infections in the African sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus, relative to the capability of internal parasites to accumulate heavy metals. Up to 100 catfish were examined for gastrointestinal helminths and 38% of fish were found to be infected with the cestode Polyonchobo

Mefloquine, a new type of compound against schistosomes and other helminthes in experimental studies.

Up to date, schistosomiasis is still prevalent worldwide. It is estimated that more than 200 million individuals are infected, and 120 million suffer from clinical morbidity. Facing such huge cases of schistosomiasis, only heavy reliance on a single praziquantel for schistosomiasis control does not adapt and may promote the selection and spread of drug-resistant parasites. Therefore, it is an urgent need to develop the new antischistosomal drug. In 2008-2009, the antimalarial drug mefloquine, an arylaminoalcohol compound, has been found to be effective against schistosomes. According to the ex

Expression pattern and substrate specificity of Clonorchis sinensis tyrosinases.

Tyrosinase (TYR) is a copper-containing glycoenzyme that mediates hydroxylation of tyrosine into dihydroxyphenylalanine and oxidation of dihydroxyphenylalanine into dihydroxyphenylalanine quinone. TYRs play pivotal roles in eggshell sclerotisation of trematode parasites, while their comprehensive biochemical properties remain elusive. We characterised genes encoding four TYRs (CsTYR1-4) of Clonorchis sinensis, a causative agent of human hepatobiliary disease. These genes shared tightly conserved amino acid residues, two copper binding catalytic motifs and a cysteine-rich epidermal growth facto
