Addressing water scarcity to support climate resilience and human health.

Water scarcity is projected to affect half of the world's population, gradually exacerbated by climate change. This article elaborates from a panel discussion at the 2023 United Nations Water Conference on "Addressing Water Scarcity to Achieve Climate Resilience and Human Health." Understanding and addressing water scarcity goes beyond hydrological water balances to also include societal and economic measures. We consider five categories of health impacts resulting from deteriorating water qualities and quantities: (1) water-related diseases and water for hygiene, (2) malnutrition and water fo

Windthrow disturbance impacts soil biogeochemistry and bacterial communities in a temperate forest.

AIMS: Forests across the world are subject to disturbance via wind, wildfire, and pest and disease outbreaks. Yet we still have an incomplete understanding of how these stressors impact forest biota-particularly the soil microbes, which govern forest carbon and nutrient cycling. METHODS: Here, we investigated the impact of a severe windstorm on soil bacterial communities in Kielder Forest, a temperate coniferous forest in the north of England. Within ten individual sites, defined by common stand composition and topography, we established 50 m2 plots in undisturbed stands, and in nearby stands

Environmental impacts of three Asian dust events in the northern China and the northwestern Pacific in spring 2021.

In March 2021, China experienced three dust events (Dust-1, 2, 3), especially the first of which was reported as the strongest one in recent ten years. Their environmental impacts have received great attention, demanding comprehensive study to assess such impacts quantitatively. Multiple advanced measurement methods, including satellite, ground-based lidar, online aerosol speciation instrument, and biogeochemical Argo float, were applied to examine and compare the transport paths, optical and chemical properties, and impacts of these three dust events on urban air quality and marine ecosystem.

Poor air quality index on the day of embryo transfer may decrease the rate of embryo transfer success.

The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate whether air quality index (AQI) on the day of embryo transfer (ET) is associated with differences in clinical pregnancy rates (CPR). The study included all patients who underwent either fresh or frozen embryo transfer between June 1 - July 31, 2023 at a single academic fertility centre in New York. During this time, smoke originating from wildfires in Eastern Canada caused significant air pollution in New York. Patients who underwent single euploid embryo transfer were included and analysed separately. The main outcome measure wa

Effects of hydro-meteorological and geological disasters on vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks and routine immunisation amongst children: A scoping review.

Hydro-meteorological and geological disasters can pose serious harm to community health, such as an increased risk of infectious diseases and related mortality. We conducted a scoping review to compile the available literature on the effects of hydro-meteorological and geological disasters on routine immunisation and vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) outbreaks among children and adolescents under 18 years. We searched Medline, Embase, Global Health, Scopus, and Web of Science for original studies and systematic reviews on the topic published by the 21st of October 2024. We included studies tha

CIMS Detection of Hydroxymethyl Hydroperoxide: Insights into Alkene Ozonolysis in a Variety of Environments.

Hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide (HMHP, CH2OHOOH) is produced from the reaction of water vapor with CH2OO, which is the simplest Criegee intermediate and is produced by the reaction of ozone (O3) with a terminal alkene. After formation, HMHP is thought to have a considerable lifetime upward of 1 day due to its reaction with OH, which produces formic acid and formaldehyde. HMHP measurements can therefore provide meaningful insight into atmospheric oxidation processes, especially alkene oxidation. We demonstrate the ability of iodide adduct chemical ionization mass spectrometry (I-CIMS) to detect HMH

A global aerosol model based on the analysis of 30-year ground measurements from AERONET (AEROEX model): Implications for satellite-derived aerosol retrievals.

The AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET), established in 1993, now spreads across 900 global sites, has about three decades of ground-based aerosol measurements. An aerosol model characterizes the physical and optical properties of atmospheric particles used in satellite and ground-based retrievals and climate simulations. Earlier aerosol models, developed using limited data (∼10-12 years, ∼250 sites), could not capture recent environmental shifts and associated changes in aerosol emissions driven by industrialization, land use changes, intensified wildfires, and dust storms. These changes necess

Isolation and sequence-based characterization of a koala symbiont: Lonepinella koalarum.

Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) are highly specialized herbivorous marsupials that feed almost exclusively on Eucalyptus leaves, which are known to contain varying concentrations of many different toxic chemical compounds. The literature suggests that Lonepinella koalarum, a bacterium in the Pasteurellaceae family, can break down some of these toxic chemical compounds. Furthermore, in a previous study, we identified L. koalarum as the most predictive taxon of koala survival during antibiotic treatment. Therefore, we believe that this bacterium may be important for koala health. Here, we isolat

Responses of the digestive tract of the omnivorous northern brown bandicoot, Isoodon macrourus (Marsupialia: Peramelidae), to plant- and insect-containing diets.

The gastrointestinal tract of omnivores such as bandicoots (Marsupialia: Peramelidae) must be able to process foods as different as invertebrates, fungi and plant material. We studied the mechanisms involved in the utilisation by captive northern brown bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus) of insect larvae and milled lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay incorporated into a basal diet of a commercial small carnivore mix. Animals on the plant-basal mix digested less dry matter, energy, lipid, fibre and total nitrogen, but consumed 79% more dry matter than those on the insect-basal mix. Consequently intake of

Estimation of the Emission Factors of the Oxygenated Organic Compounds Generated via Pyrolysis of Eucalyptus and Pine Biomass.

Wood pyrolysis during eucalyptus and pine forest fires causes considerable environmental concern because of the associated release of oxygenated organic compounds (OOCs), such as acetic acid, acetol, and aldehydes. Both estimation of the emission factors (EFs) and mechanistic attribution for these OOCs necessitate pyrolysis conducted under rigorously controlled conditions, specifically, low-temperature regimes and gradual rates in heating protocols, temperature-resolved sampling in pyrolysis gas capturing, and independent contribution evaluation of components-derived OOCs emissionutilizing eu

Enhancing vulnerability assessment through spatially explicit modeling of mountain social-ecological systems exposed to multiple environmental hazards.

The evaluation of the vulnerability of coupled socio-ecological systems is critical for addressing and preventing the adverse impacts of various environmental hazards and devising strategies for climate change adaptation. The initial step in vulnerability assessment involves exposure assessment, which entails quantifying and mapping the risks posed by multiple environmental hazards, thereby offering valuable insights for the implementation of vulnerability assessment methodologies. Consequently, this study sought to model the exposure of coupled social-ecological systems in mountainous regions

Evidence for cytotoxicity and mitochondrial dysfunction in human lung cells exposed to biomass burning aerosol constituents: Levoglucosan and 4-nitrocatechol.

Biomass burning (BB) emissions are one of the largest sources of carbonaceous aerosol, posing a significant risk as an airway irritant. Important BB markers include wood pyrolysis emissions, such as levoglucosan (LG) that is an anhydrous sugar bearing a six-carbon ring structure (i.e., 1,6-anhydro-β-D-glucopyranose). Atmospheric chemical aging of BB-derived aerosol (BBA) in the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx) can yield nitro-aromatic compounds, including 4-nitrocatechol (4NC). There is building evidence that NOx-mediated chemical aging of BBA poses a more serious exposure effect than primary

Changes in aerosol loading before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in China: Effects of anthropogenic and natural aerosol.

Anthropogenic emissions reduced sharply in the short-term during the coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19). As COVID-19 is still ongoing, changes in atmospheric aerosol loading over China and the factors of their variations remain unclear. In this study, we used multi-source satellite observations and reanalysis datasets to synergistically analyze the spring (February-May) evolution of aerosol optical depth (AOD) for multiple aerosol types over Eastern China (EC) before, during and after the COVID-19 lockdown period. Regional meteorological effects and the radiative response were also quanti

Fire severity unaffected by spruce beetle outbreak in spruce-fir forests in southwestern Colorado.

Recent large and severe outbreaks of native bark beetles have raised concern among the general public and land managers about potential for amplified fire activity in western North America. To date, the majority of studies examining bark beetle outbreaks and subsequent fire severity in the U.S. Rocky Mountains have focused on outbreaks of mountain pine beetle (MPB; Dendroctonus ponderosae) in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forests, but few studies, particularly field studies, have addressed the effects of the severity of spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby) infestation on subsequent

Violent deaths following disasters: A retrospective analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Negative mental health outcomes associated with disaster exposure can increase risks of interpersonal and self-directed violence. However, the link between disaster exposure and increased incidence in violent deaths is not clearly established. STUDY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work is to assess the incidence of violent deaths in non-disaster and disaster periods across five distinct disaster events. METHODS: This study uses an ecological, quasi-experimental design to assess violent deaths in pre-disaster and disaster periods across five U.S. states (e.g., North Carolina, O
