Consciousness about own and others' affects: a study of the validity of a revised version of the Affect Consciousness Interview.

This study presents a modified version of the affect consciousness interview (Monsen, Eilertsen, Melgård & Odegård, 1996), intended to capture the individual's affective consciousness. The aim of the modified version - The Affect Consciousness Interview - Revised (ACI-R) - is to measure consciousness about own and others' affects. Three groups of patients (with eating disorder, relational and social problems or stress-related problems), and one non-clinical group were included in the study (N= 95). The results indicated that it was possible to achieve adequate interrater reliability, that the

Are hypomanics the happier normals?

BACKGROUND: Not much is known about hypomanic states in subjects free of major and minor depressive mood disorders. Our aim was to identify and characterise a group of such "pure" hypomanics in relation to a normal control group. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Swiss Zurich study, a stratified epidemiological sample of young adults from the general population, followed from age 20 to 40. "Pure" hypomania was defined as a period of increased activity and decreased need for sleep with consequences (e.g. legal trouble or reactions by others). Minor and major mood disorders were excluded. R

[Eating disorders in children and adolescents. First results of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS)].

Eating disorders are included in the category of mental and behavioural disorders (ICD 10). They are among the most common chronic health problems encountered in children and adolescents. A total of 7,498 children and adolescents (weighted) aged 11 to 17 years answered the SCOFF questionnaire, a screening instrument to identify cases of suspected eating disorder. Parallel to the SCOFF questionnaire, further factors for possible eating disorders, such as the Body Mass Index (BMI), information on abnormal behaviour (using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, SDQ) smoking, sexual and bod

An Interactive, Graphical Tool for Retrospectively Assessing Symptom Frequency and Severity: An Illustration With Eating Disorder Behaviors, Body Weight, and Stress.

There are few assessments that gather valid, highly detailed data on short-term (i.e., weekly) symptom frequency/severity retrospectively. In particular, methodologies that provide valid data for research investigating symptom changes are typically prospective, expensive, and burdensome. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new interactive and graphical assessment tool for gathering detailed information about eating-related symptom frequency/severity retrospectively over a 3-month period. A mixed eating disorder sample ( N = 113) recruited from the community provided symptom data once w

Restraint, hunger, and disinhibition following treatment for binge-eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in total, flexible and rigid restraint, hunger, and disinhibition in obese individuals with Binge-Eating Disorder (BED), and assess whether these variables are associated with binge abstinence at post-treatment and during two-year follow-up. METHOD: A total of 116 obese individuals with BED were randomized to a 20-week treatment trial plus two-year follow-up. Using the Eating Inventory (EI), we assessed these factors at pretreatment, post-treatment, and follow-up time-points and examined their relationship to binge abstinence at post-treatment, 12- and 24-month f

The cDNA 385C to A missense polymorphism of the endocannabinoid degrading enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) is associated with overweight/obesity but not with binge eating disorder in overweight/obese women.

Endocannabinoids are involved in the modulation of eating behavior; hence, alterations of this system may play a role in obesity. Recently, a single nucleotide polymorphism (cDNA 385C to A) of the gene coding for fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), the major degrading enzyme of endocannabinoids, has been found to be associated with obesity. However, the possibility that the FAAH gene cDNA 385C to A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is associated to binge eating disorder (BED), a condition that frequently occurs in obese individuals, has not been investigated. In order to address this issue,

The Effects of Malnutrition and Refeeding on Perioperative Wound Complications in Surgical Patients With Eating Disorders: A Narrative Review.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are eating disorders (EDs) with the highest mortality rate of psychiatric illnesses and medical complications, often due to protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, leading to poor long-term outcomes. Patients with EDs undergo changes in nutritional status that manifest as decreased skin tensile strength, impaired immune function, reduced collagen production, and disrupted electrolyte and fluid balance, thereby increasing the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs), pressure ulcers (PUs), refeeding syndrome (RS), and edema/refee

Age at onset of mental disorders worldwide: large-scale meta-analysis of 192 epidemiological studies.

Promotion of good mental health, prevention, and early intervention before/at the onset of mental disorders improve outcomes. However, the range and peak ages at onset for mental disorders are not fully established. To provide robust, global epidemiological estimates of age at onset for mental disorders, we conducted a PRISMA/MOOSE-compliant systematic review with meta-analysis of birth cohort/cross-sectional/cohort studies, representative of the general population, reporting age at onset for any ICD/DSM-mental disorders, identified in PubMed/Web of Science (up to 16/05/2020) (PROSPERO:CRD4201

Well-being differences and changes in people with somatic and psychiatric disorders or multimorbidities: modelling COVID-19 as a global natural experiment of stress vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: Somatic and psychiatric illnesses and multimorbidities increase stress-vulnerability and decrease well-being. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify high-risk disorder profiles for lower well-being and well-being decline under stress, modelling COVID-19 as a natural experiment. METHODS: The global Collaborative Outcomes Study on Health and Functioning during Infection Times survey assessed the World Health Organization-Five Well-being Index (WHO-5) (0-100) retrospectively pre-pandemic and intra-pandemically. Passive Sensor Data for Characterizing States of Increased Risk for Eating Disorder Behaviors in the Digital Phenotyping Arm of the Binge Eating Genetics Initiative: Protocol for an Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Data that can be easily, efficiently, and safely collected via cell phones and other digital devices have great potential for clinical application. Here, we focus on how these data could be used to refine and augment intervention strategies for binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN), conditions that lack highly efficacious, enduring, and accessible treatments. These data are easy to collect digitally but are highly complex and present unique methodological challenges that invite innovative solutions. OBJECTIVE: We describe the digital phenotyping component of the Bin

Bipolar disorder with binge eating behavior: a genome-wide association study implicates PRR5-ARHGAP8.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with binge eating behavior (BE), and both conditions are heritable. Previously, using data from the Genetic Association Information Network (GAIN) study of BD, we performed genome-wide association (GWA) analyses of BD with BE comorbidity. Here, utilizing data from the Mayo Clinic BD Biobank (969 BD cases, 777 controls), we performed a GWA analysis of a BD subtype defined by BE, and case-only analysis comparing BD subjects with and without BE. We then performed a meta-analysis of the Mayo and GAIN results. The meta-analysis provided genome-wide significant ev

Inflammatory activation and cholinergic anti-inflammatory system in eating disorders.

Dysfunctional serotoninergic regulation and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis overreactivity have been consistently reported in research studies with eating disorders (ED). In addition, the links between stress response, serotonin function, HPA axis and inflammatory mechanisms in ED have also been suggested in a number of studies. In our study, inflammatory parameters in white blood cells were investigated in 26 female patients with ED and 25 healthy control subjects matched for sex, age and ethnicity. Patients were free of medication for at least two weeks at the time of the study. Re

The Weight Influenced Self-Esteem Questionnaire (WISE-Q): factor structure and psychometric properties.

Weight-based self-esteem (WBSE) is hypothesized to be the core cognitive feature of eating disorders. The Weight Influenced Self-Esteem Questionnaire (WISE-Q) was designed to measure the influence of a negatively perceived body image on multiple dimensions of self-esteem, which we believe to be one aspect of WBSE. Study 1 sought to determine the factor structure of the WISE-Q as well as to examine the reliability and concurrent validity of WISE-Q scores among eating disorder and undergraduate student participants. In Study 2, validity was further investigated by examining changes in WISE-Q sco
