3D deformation and dynamics of the human cadaver abdomen under seatbelt loading.

According to accident analysis, submarining is responsible for most of the frontal car crash AIS 3+ abdominal injuries sustained by restrained occupants. Submarining is characterized by an initial position of the lap belt on the iliac spine. During the crash, the pelvis slips under the lap belt which loads the abdomen. The order of magnitude of the abdominal deflection rate was reported by Uriot to be approximately 4 m/s. In addition, the use of active restraint devices such as pretensioners in recent cars lead to the need for the investigation of Out-Of-Position injuries. OOP is defined by an

Multiscale Meniscus Mechanics under Unconfined Compression: Composite Fibril-Reinforced Biphasic Modeling across Infinitesimal to Physiological Cumulative Strain Regimes.

To investigate the mechanical roles of proteoglycan aggregates, interstitial fluid, and the collagen fibrillar network in meniscal mechanics, we developed and experimentally validated a composite fibril-reinforced biphasic (CFRB) model based on a heterogeneous and anisotropic structural description of the meniscus and tested whether shear wave elastography (SWE) could independently reflect matrix‑dominated and fibril‑engaged behavior. Focusing on the pars intermedia, 21+12+(6 × 5) disc specimens underwent unconfined compression across cumulative strains extending into the nonlinear regime to i

Effect of medium and tall hood leading edge vehicle front-end characteristics on pedestrian torso injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Field data analysis has shown that SUVs and pickup trucks cause more torso injuries than sedans, and the rapid increasing proportion of SUVs among the U.S. vehicle fleet will likely increase the importance of pedestrian torso protection. The objective of this study is to use finite element (FE) vehicle and human body models to investigate effects of vehicle front-end geometry and stiffness characteristics on pedestrian injuries, specifically focusing on SUVs and pickup trucks and pedestrian torso injuries. METHODS: Front-end geometries of 74 U.S. vehicles, including 41 with hood le

Modelling the effect of ventricular expansion on white matter in normal pressure hydrocephalus.

The mechanism by which idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) causes cognitive impairment, gait dysfunction and urinary incontinence is unclear. The key radiological feature is ventriculomegaly, and symptoms can be treated with surgery. We hypothesise that ventricular expansion causes clinical effects by stretching and/or compressing white matter tracts. We define disease-specific white matter abnormalities, explore their relationship to clinical features and test whether they can be explained by a computational model of ventricular expansion in iNPH. In this observational study, diff

Plating after tumor curettage in human femora does not efficiently improve torsional stability ex vivo.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatments of benign primary bone tumors of the femur face the challenge of limiting tissue damage and contamination while providing sufficient stabilization to avoid fracture. While no clear treatment guidelines exist, surgical treatment commonly consists of femoral fenestration and curettage with optional filling and plating of the defect. Mono- or bicortical plating of distal femoral defects aim to reduce fracture risk and have been shown to increase axial stability. However, it remains unclear whether plating increases torsional stability of the affected femur. QUESTI

Contact between leaked cement and adjacent vertebral endplate induces a greater risk of adjacent vertebral fracture with vertebral bone cement augmentation biomechanically.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Adjacent vertebral fracture (AVF) is a frequently observed complication after percutaneous vertebroplasty in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compressive fracture (OVCF). Studies have demonstrated that intervertebral cement leakage (ICL) can increase the incidence of AVF, but others have reached opposite conclusions. The stress concentration initially increases the risk of AVF, and dispersive concentrated stress is the main biomechanical function of the intervertebral disc (IVD). PURPOSE: This study was designed to validate the hypothesis that direct contact between th

Can micro-imaging based analysis methods quantify structural integrity of rat vertebrae with and without metastatic involvement?

This study compares the ability of μCT image-based registration, 2D structural rigidity analyses and multimodal continuum-level finite element (FE) modeling in evaluating the mechanical stability of healthy, osteolytic, and mixed osteolytic/osteoblastic metastatically involved rat vertebrae. μMR and μCT images (loaded and unloaded) were acquired of lumbar spinal motion segments from 15rnu/rnu rats (five per group). Strains were calculated based on image registration of the loaded and unloaded μCT images and via analysis of FE models created from the μCT and μMR data. Predicted yield load was a

Plate fixation of prostheses after segmental resection for bone tumours.

This study investigated the concept of using plates to attach endoprostheses to bone after segmental resection for bone tumours in an animal model. Titanium alloy plates integrated with the prosthesis and coated with hydroxyapatite were attached to bone by screws. This type of uncemented fixation relied on the induction of periosteal bone formation into and around the plates to secure the implant to bone. Two, three, and six-slotted plate designs were investigated. On retrieval, each plate was securely fixed by new bone. Bone apposition on the external surface of the plates occurred through a

SDF-1 loaded dECM patch improves cardiac function in rats after myocardial ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) remains a global health challenge, characterized by irreversible cardiomyocyte loss and pathological ventricular remodeling. Myocardial patches provide mechanical support for infarcted myocardium, but conventional biomaterials lack bioactive components to facilitate tissue regeneration. This study introduces a novel therapeutic strategy: a stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1)-loaded decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) (SDF-dECM) patch addressing both biological and biomechanical deficiencies in myocardial repair. METHODS: Porcine left ventricul

Systematic review of biomechanical forces associated with carotid plaque disruption and stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Carotid plaque disruption with release of atheroembolic debris and consequent brain infarction is the primary mechanism for brain injury in patients with carotid stenosis. Disease severity is quantified traditionally by the degree of stenosis, although it is not an accurate marker of stroke risk. It has been proposed that biomechanical forces acting on a carotid plaque may render it vulnerable to rupture by causing adverse remodeling of its morphology or by direct disruption. We conducted a systematic review to assess the forces acting on carotid plaques and their relationship to ad

Retention and fatigue performance of modified polyetheretherketone clasps for removable prosthesis.

PURPOSE: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is considered as an alternative to metal material for removable partial denture (RPD). However, the retentive force is not strong as a metal RPD. This study investigated the retention and fatigue performance of PEEK clasps with different proportions of clasp arm engaging the undercut to verify a new strategy to improve their clinical performance. METHODS: Three groups (n = 10/group) of PEEK clasps with their terminal 1/3, 2/3 and the whole of retentive arms engaging the undercut were fabricated along with a group (n = 10) of conventional cobalt-chrome (CoC

Regional differences in bone mineral density biomechanically induce a higher risk of adjacent vertebral fracture after percutaneous vertebroplasty: a case-comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Adjacent vertebral fracture (AVF) is a frequently observed complication after percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compressive fracture. Biomechanical deterioration initially induces a higher risk of AVF. Studies demonstrated that the aggravation of regional differences in the elastic modulus of different components might deteriorate the local biomechanical environment and increase the risk of structural failure. Considering the existence of intravertebral regional differences in bone mineral density (BMD) (i.e. elastic modulus), it was hypothes

Rib cortical bone thickness variation in adults by age and sex.

Rib fractures are a common and serious outcome of blunt thoracic trauma and their likelihood is greater in older individuals. Osteoporotic bone loss is a well-documented aging phenomenon with sex-specific characteristics, but within rib bones, neither baseline maps of regional thickness nor the rates of bone thinning with age have been quantified across whole ribs. This study presents such data from 4014 ribs of 240 adult subjects aged 20-90. A validated cortical bone mapping technique was applied to clinical computed tomography scans to obtain local rib cortical bone thickness measurements ov

A computational analysis of potential aortic dilation induced by the hemodynamic effects of bicuspid aortic valve phenotypes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a major risk factor for the progression of aortic dilation (AD) because of the induced abnormal blood flow environment in aorta. The differences in the development of AD induced by BAV phenotypes remains unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the potential locations of AD induced by different phenotypes of BAV. The different effects of opening orifice area and leaflet orientation on ascending aortic hemodynamics in Type-1 BAV was investigated by means of numerical simulation. METHODS: Finite element dynamic a

Material properties of mouse cervical tissue in normal gestation.

UNLABELLED: An appropriately timed cervical remodeling process is critical for a healthy delivery, yet little is known about the material property changes of the cervix in pregnancy because obtaining human tissue samples is difficult. Rodent models offer advantages including accurately timed pregnant tissues and genetically altered models. Determining the material properties of the mouse cervix, however, is challenging because of its small size and complex geometry. The aim of this study is to quantify cervical material property changes in a normal mouse pregnancy using a microstructurally-ins

Total hip arthroplasty with cement and use of a collared matte-finish femoral component: nineteen to twenty-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: In the mid- to late 1970s, on the basis of laboratory and finite element data, many surgeons in the United States began using collared matte-finish femoral components and metal-backed acetabular components in their total hip arthroplasties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of the use of one such construct in arthroplasties performed by a single surgeon in a consecutive nonselected patient cohort. METHODS: Between January 1984 and December 1985, 273 patients underwent a total of 304 consecutive nonselected total hip arthroplasties with cement and use

Comparison of Outcomes After Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Using Bioactive Glass-Ceramic Spacer-7 (NOVOMAX-FUSION) and an Allograft Spacer: A Retrospective, Case-Matched, Multicenter Study.

The bioactive glass-ceramic spacer (BGS)-7, a biosynthetic intervertebral fusion material introduced in 2014, has not been the subject of comparative clinical studies on anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery. This study, for the first time, aims to compare the radiological and clinical outcomes of the renewed BGS-7, released in 2019, with those of an allograft spacer. The comparison includes a finite element analysis of the biomechanical properties of each implant, adding a novel dimension to the research. We prospectively followed up on 29 patients who underwent ACDF using BG

Fish swim bladders as valve leaflets enhance the durability of transcatheter aortic valve replacement devices.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has emerged as an effective therapy for inoperable patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). However, calcification-induced limited durability restricts its application. Fish swim bladders (FSB), which are resistant to calcific degeneration, offer a viable solution to this challenge. In this study, we developed a new TAVR device using FSB as the valve leaflet. Furthermore, the in vitro durability, in vivo performance, and size selection of this TAVR device were assessed by an experimental study and finite element analysis. A self-expandable TAVR d
