Antimicrobial activity of different filling pastes for deciduous tooth treatment.

Guedes-Pinto paste is the filling material most employed in Brazil for endodontic treatment of deciduous teeth; however, the Rifocort® ointment has been removed. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial potential of filling pastes, by proposing three new pharmacological associations to replace Rifocort® ointment with drugs of already established antimicrobial power: Nebacetin® ointment, 2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate gel, and Maxitrol® ointment. A paste composed of Iodoform, Rifocort® ointment and Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol (CPC) was employed as the gold standard (G1)

Comparative effects of Myrmecodia sp. extract and infusion on organ function biomarkers, lipid metabolism, and meat lipid profile in avian pathogenic Escherichia coli-infected broiler chickens: Implications for sustainable poultry production within a One Health framework.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a major cause of colibacillosis in broiler chickens, leading to systemic inflammation, organ dysfunction, disrupted lipid metabolism, and compromised meat quality. Growing concerns about antimicrobial resistance necessitate the development of sustainable alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters. Myrmecodia sp., a medicinal plant rich in bioactive flavonoids, tannins, and phenolics, has demonstrated antibacterial and antioxidant properties. However, limited information is available on the comparative effects of different prepara

Evaluation of Viable Mutans Streptococci Colony Count and Its Association with Salivary Immunoglobulin A with Severity of Early Childhood Caries: An Original Research.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Though dental caries has a multifactorial etiology, the specific factor that results in its high rate of transmissibility is the microbial component, that is, mutans streptococci (MS), and its association with protective factors, such as salivary immunoglobulin A (S-IgA). Hence, it is important to identify such risk and protective factors associated with early childhood caries (ECC) using isolation of the colonies based on the fundamental method of colony morphology, adjunct with an advanced fully automated platform, to minimize human errors. Butyric and valeric glycerides alleviate sub-clinical necrotic enteritis effect on performance and gut health of broiler chickens.

Organic acids are readily absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract, which hinders their optimal delivery to segments where gut health issues mostly occur. Glycerol esters of butyric and valeric acid (BVg) are known for their capacity to release acids within the small intestine. This study evaluated the impact of BVg on the performance and gut health of broilers under a sub-clinical necrotic enteritis (NE) challenge. A total of 1200 Cobb 500 chicks were assigned to four treatments: 1) UC- unchallenged control, 2) CC- NE challenged control, 3) BVg- CC plus BVg (1000, 500, 250 g/ton in starte

Metagenomic Insights into the Diverse Antibiotic Resistome of Non-Migratory Corvidae Species on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Antibiotic resistance represents a global health crisis with far-reaching implications, impacting multiple domains concurrently, including human health, animal health, and the natural environment. Wild birds were identified as carriers and disseminators of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and their associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). A majority of studies in this area have concentrated on migratory birds as carriers for the spread of antibiotic resistance over long distances. However, there has been scant research on the resistome of non-migratory Corvidae species that heavily ov

Efficacy of Gentamicin irrigation for the prevention of surgical site infection in brain surgery: A randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs) in neurosurgery remain a significant concern due to their associated high morbidity and mortality. Consequently, implementing the most effective preventive measures is essential. One such strategy, intraoperative antibiotic irrigation, has been widely employed; however, its efficacy continues to be debated. Numerous studies have examined the use of various antibiotics, including streptomycin, bacitracin, gentamicin, rifamycin, amikacin, and vancomycin. Among these, gentamicin has shown promising results in reducing SSI rates, although o

Characterization of spray-dried plasma-induced immune response in Salmonella-challenged broiler chicks.

Spray-dried plasma (SDP) is a functional feed additive that has been established to improve performance and health of livestock. Understanding the effect of SDP in immune response modulation is essential to optimize its use for controlling Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) infection in chickens. This study was conducted to determine the levels of expression of selected cytokine genes in the ileum and cecal tonsil of SE-challenged broiler chicks. In a floor-pen housing, 320 broilers chicks were randomly assigned to 6 treatment groups: CX (unmedicated corn-soybean meal (SBM) basal without SDP), MX (un

Topical or oral antibiotics for children with acute otitis media presenting with ear discharge: study protocol of a randomised controlled non-inferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Around 15%-20% of children with acute otitis media present with ear discharge due to a spontaneous tear or perforation of the eardrum (AOMd). Current guidance recommends clinicians to consider oral antibiotics as first-line treatment in this condition. The opening in the eardrum however should allow topical antibiotics to enter the middle ear directly. Local administration of antibiotics does not expose children to systemic side effects and may put less selective resistance pressure on bacteria. Evidence on the effectiveness of this approach in children with AOMd is lacking. METHO

Two different Clostridium perfringens strains produce different levels of necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens.

Subclinical necrotic enteritis (NE) is primarily caused by the gram-positive bacterium, Clostridium perfringens (Cp). The trend towards removal of in-feed antimicrobials and subsequent increased emergence of infection in poultry has resulted in a wide interest in better understanding of the mechanism behind this disease. The virulence of NE, to a large extent, depends on the virulence of Cp strains. Thus, this study was to assess how 2 different strains of Cp affect performance and gut characteristics of broiler chickens. Ross 308 male broilers (n = 468) were assigned to a 2 × 3 factorial arra
