Laboratory evaluation of a dot-blot enzyme immunoassay for serologic confirmation of illness due to Rickettsia conorii.

Of the 169 United States Army soldiers who deployed on a field training exercise to a remote area of Botswana for two weeks in January 1992, more than 30% developed a febrile illness within five days of their return. A diagnosis of South African tick typhus was suggested by soldiers' exposure to ticks, as well as the presence of eschars and vesicles at the site of tick bites, and tender regional lymphadenopathies. This high attack rate, experienced during such a short exposure period, emphasizes the hazard of illness due to Rickettsia conorii to persons visiting endemic areas. A rapid, diagnos

The Bushman arrow toxin, Diamphidia toxin: isolation from pupae of Diamphidia nigro-ornata.

The Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana use the pupae of the beetle Diamphidia nigro-ornata Ståhl to poison their arrows. Sequential aqueous extraction, ammonium sulfate precipitation, ultrafiltration and chromatofocusing have given an apparently homogeneous active protein from these pupae with an approximate mol. wt of 54,000, an isoelectric point of about 8.0 pH and a lethal potency (minimum lethal dose, MLD) between 5 and 20 micrograms/kg (i.p. mouse). Preliminary pharmacological studies on less purified material show that, after a delay, this Diamphidia toxin causes sustained contra

Burden and changes in HIV/AIDS morbidity and mortality in Southern Africa Development Community Countries, 1990-2017.

BACKGROUND: The 16 Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries remain the epicentre of the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the largest number of people living with HIV/AIDS. Anti-retroviral treatment (ART) has improved survival and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, but the disease remains a serious cause of mortality. We conducted a descriptive epidemiological analysis of HIV/AIDS burden for the 16 SADC countries using secondary data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factor (GBD) Study. METHODS: The GBD study is a systematic, scientific effort by

Change in elevation predicts 100 km ultra marathon performance.

The 100-km ultra-marathon is one of the most popular ultra-marathon distances. While we have a lot of scientific knowledge, no data exist about the influence of race course characteristics and other geographical aspects, on race performance. Therefore, the aims of this study were (i) to investigate where the fastest 100-km races are held and where the fastest runners originate from, (ii) to evaluate a potential influence of specific race characteristics (i.e., influence of elevation and race course characteristics) on performance, and (iii) to assess the influence of individual athlete perform

Evaluation of the sensitivity and specificity of the lateral flow assay, Rose Bengal test and the complement fixation test for the diagnosis of brucellosis in cattle using Bayesian latent class analysis.

This study was conducted to evaluate the sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of the Rose Bengal test (RBT), complement fixation test (CFT), the serum lateral flow assay (LFAserum) and the blood lateral flow assay (LFAblood) for the detection of antibodies to Brucella spp. using Bayesian latent class models (BLCMs). Sera and whole blood were collected from naturally infected cattle reared in smallholder, small-scale commercial and large-scale commercial farms in Zimbabwe (n = 1022) and Botswana (n = 770). The BLCMs were fitted under the assumption that conditional dependences existed between

The effects of trypanosomiasis on rural economy with special reference to the Sudan, Bechuanaland and West Africa.

Trypanosomiasis, both of humans and of livestock, is one of the most important factors restricting economic development in Africa today. The present paper outlines how this disease is limiting agricultural, veterinary and forestry development in the Sudan, Bechuanaland and West Africa. The present tsetse-fly distribution is reviewed. Glossina palpalis and G. morsitans occur in the south Sudan and G. morsitans in the Ngamiland district of Bechuanaland; G. morsitans, G. palpalis and G. tachinoides are the most important species in West Africa. These tsetse flies have altered the cattle distributio

Do not feed the wildlife: associations between garbage use, aggression, and disease in banded mongooses (Mungos mungo).

Urbanization and other human modifications of the landscape may indirectly affect disease dynamics by altering host behavior in ways that influence pathogen transmission. Few opportunities arise to investigate behaviorally mediated effects of human habitat modification in natural host-pathogen systems, but we provide a potential example of this phenomenon in banded mongooses (Mungos mungo), a social mammal. Our banded mongoose study population in Botswana is endemically infected with a novel Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex pathogen, M. mungi, that primarily invades the mongoose host through

Projecting shifts in the distribution of Vachellia tortilis subsp. raddiana in Africa under climate change: a MaxEnt modeling and GIS analysis.

Vachellia tortilis (Forssk.) Hayne subsp. raddiana (Savi) Brenan, a drought-resistant tree native to arid and semi-arid regions of Africa and the Middle East, plays a crucial ecological and socioeconomic role by providing shade, forage, fuelwood, and contributing to soil stabilization and desertification control. To support scientific site selection for artificial planting and assess its current and potential distribution, we used the MaxEnt model combined with ArcGIS to evaluate climatic suitability across Africa based on occurrence records and environmental variables. After ten iterations, t

Human Immunodeficiency Virus Exposure but Not Early Cytomegalovirus Infection Is Associated With Increased Hospitalization and Decreased Memory T-Cell Responses to Tetanus Vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-exposed, uninfected (HEU) infants experience high rates of infectious morbidity. We hypothesized that early cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was associated with increased hospitalization rates and decreased vaccine responses in HEU compared with HIV-unexposed (HUU) infants. METHODS: Among infants enrolled in the Tshipidi study in Botswana, we determined CMV infection status by 6 months of age and compared hospitalization rates and responses to tetanus and Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccines among HEU and HUU vaccinees. RESULTS: Fifteen of 226 (6.6%)

Co-infection with HPV types from the same species provides natural cross-protection from progression to cervical cancer.

BACKGROUND: The worldwide administration of bivalent and quadrivalent HPV vaccines has resulted in cross-protection against non-vaccine HPV types. Infection with multiple HPV types may offer similar cross-protection in the natural setting. We hypothesized that infections with two or more HPV types from the same species, and independently, infections with two or more HPV types from different species, associate with protection from high-grade lesions. FINDINGS: We recruited a cohort of 94 HIV, HPV-positive women from Botswana, with Grade 2 or higher cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Infection

Tracking pathogen transmission at the human-wildlife interface: banded mongoose and Escherichia coli.

A primary challenge to managing emerging infectious disease is identifying pathways that allow pathogen transmission at the human-wildlife interface. Using Escherichia coli as a model organism, we evaluated fecal bacterial transmission between banded mongoose (Mungos mungo) and humans in northern Botswana. Fecal samples were collected from banded mongoose living in protected areas (n = 87, 3 troops) and surrounding villages (n = 92, 3 troops). Human fecal waste was collected from the same environment (n = 46). Isolates were evaluated for susceptibility to 10 antibiotics. Resistant E. coli isol

Effect of vitamin C supplementation on black mineworkers.

Subclinical vitamin C deficiency frequently occurs in Black mineworkers, in spite of an apparently adequate daily intake. A study was undertaken to establish the minimum rate of supplementation that would effectively reduce the incidence of subclinical vitamin C deficiency. Two levels of supplementation were tested in relation to a control group. It was found that a supplementation rate of at least 235 mg/head/day is required to maintain reasonably adequate serum levels. It was also found that effective control measures are required to ensure that the supplement is added to the magou, the stap

Pathological manifestations of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection in wild African lions.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) causes AIDS in the domestic cat (Felis catus) but has not been explicitly associated with AIDS pathology in any of the eight free-ranging species of Felidae that are endemic with circulating FIV strains. African lion (Panthera leo) populations are infected with lion-specific FIV strains (FIVple), yet there remains uncertainty about the degree to which FIV infection impacts their health. Reported CD4+ T-lymphocyte depletion in FIVple-infected lions and anecdotal reports of lion morbidity associated with FIV seroprevalence emphasize the concern as to whether F

Prevalence of maxillary canine-first premolar transposition in a composite African sample.

Transposition of the maxillary canine and first premolar, or Mx.C.P1 transposition, is a rare positional anomaly that may occur more frequently in Caucasian subjects. However, little information exists for nonwhite populations. The purpose of this research was to document the prevalence of Mx.C.P1 transposition in a composite sample from three African localities. Pedi (n=242) and Bushmen (n=143) dental casts and a skeletal sample of Nubians (n=205) were examined for atypical tooth order. Three cases (two Bushmen and one Nubian) of Mx.C.P1 transposition were discovered. The affected individuals

Place susceptibility index mapping at local government scale from population-based survey for Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Place Susceptibility Index (PSI) has the potential to be a critical tool in effectively managing infectious disease outbreaks or natural disasters in Africa. However, PSI availability for the African continent is limited and often, when available, is only at the national or regional level. Thus, lacking the required details to support locally relevant decision-making to support such activities. Here, outlined the method for modeling PSI at the 3rd-order administrative level for selected African Countries. This method combined Bayesian spatial statistical modeling with the utilization of th

Environmental and geographical factors influence malaria transmission in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa.

The malaria burden remains largely concentrated in sub- Saharan Africa. South Africa, a country within this region, has made significant progress toward malaria elimination. However, malaria continues to be endemic in three of its nine provinces: Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), which are located in the northern part of the country and share borders with Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. This study focuses on KZN, where district municipalities report monthly malaria cases ranging from zero to 8,981. Fitting Bayesian zero-inflated models in the INLA R package, we assessed the eff
