Microscopic and molecular characterization of Hepatozoon domerguei (Apicomplexa) and Foleyella furcata (Nematoda) in wild endemic reptiles from Madagascar.

Madagascar is one of the world's top twelve "megadiversity" hot spots hosting unique and threatened flora and fauna. Parasites are a major component of biodiversity but remain largely uncharacterized in wildlife. In this study we combine microscopic and molecular assessment of hemoparasites in endemic reptile species from Madagascar. We detected three distinct parasites: the apicomplexans Hepatozoon and Sarcocystis, and filarial nematodes. The prevalence and intensity of these apicomplexans were low overall, while microfilarial infections in chameleons were relatively high. We detected mixed i

Effect of dietary supplementation of Lawsonia inermis and Acacia nilotica extract on growth performance, intestinal histopathology, and antioxidant status of broiler chickens challenged with coccidiosis.

Avian coccidiosis is one of the many disorders that seriously harm birds' digestive systems. Nowadays the light is shed on using Phytochemical/herbal medicines as alternative natural anti-coccidial chemical-free standards. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the impact of lawsonia inermis powder (LIP), and Acacia nilotica aqueous extract (ANAE), on growth performance, serum biochemical, antioxidant status, cytokine biomarkers, total oocyst count and intestinal histopathology of broiler chickens challenged with coccidiosis. Two hundred and forty-one-day-old Ross chicks were randomly d

Fussing About Fission: Defining Variety Among Mainstream and Exotic Apicomplexan Cell Division Modes.

Cellular reproduction defines life, yet our textbook-level understanding of cell division is limited to a small number of model organisms centered around humans. The horizon on cell division variants is expanded here by advancing insights on the fascinating cell division modes found in the Apicomplexa, a key group of protozoan parasites. The Apicomplexa display remarkable variation in offspring number, whether karyokinesis follows each S/M-phase or not, and whether daughter cells bud in the cytoplasm or bud from the cortex. We find that the terminology used to describe the various manifestatio

The effects of different doses of curcumin compound on growth performance, antioxidant status, and gut health of broiler chickens challenged with Eimeria species.

Supplementation of broiler diets with feed additives such as chemotherapeutic drugs and antibiotics has side effects, meat residues, and antibiotics resistance complications. Plant-derived natural compounds could be safe and easy substitutes for chemical additives. One of the natural compounds is curcumin, the extract from herbal plant Curcuma longa, known for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties which may be effective in reducing coccidia infection in poultry. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of curcumin on Eimeria challenged (C) and nonchallenged (NC) Cobb 500

Differences in fecundity of Eimeria maxima strains exhibiting different levels of pathogenicity in its avian host.

Eimeria maxima is one of the most pathogenic species of avian coccidia, yet it is unknown why different E. maxima strains differ in the pathogenic effects they cause in chickens. The purpose of this study was to determine if a more pathogenic E. maxima strain (APU1) was also more fecund than a less pathogenic E. maxima strain (APU2). At identical doses, E. maxima APU1 always produces greater intestinal lesions and lower weight gain compared to E. maxima APU2. Using a dose response study, median and mean intestinal lesion scores in E. maxima APU1-infected chickens were greater by a score of 1-1

Effect of yeast cell product (CitriStim) supplementation on broiler performance and intestinal immune cell parameters during an experimental coccidial infection.

This experiment studied the effects of whole yeast cell product supplementation on broiler production parameters, fecal coccidial oocyst counts, and local and systemic immune parameters following an experimental coccidial infection. Birds were fed 0, 0.1, or 0.2% whole yeast cell product (CitriStim). At 21 d of age, birds were challenged with live coccidial oocysts. Supplementation with whole yeast cell product increased BW gain between 0 and 12 d (P = 0.01) postcoccidial challenge. Birds supplemented with 0.2% Citristim had better (P = 0.01) feed efficiency between 0 and 12 d postcoccidial in

Prevalence of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys, Babesia canis vogeli, Hepatozoon canis, Bartonella vinsonii berkhoffii, and Rickettsia spp. in dogs from Grenada.

To identify the tick-borne pathogens in dogs from Grenada, we conducted a serologic survey for Ehrlichia canis in 2004 (104 dogs) and a comprehensive serologic and molecular survey for a variety of tick-borne pathogens in 2006 (73 dogs). In 2004 and 2006, 44 and 32 dogs (42.3% and 43.8%) were seropositive for E. canis, respectively. In 2006, several tick-borne pathogens were identified by serology and PCR. DNA of E. canis, Anaplasma platys, Babesia canis vogeli, Hepatozoon canis, and Bartonella sp. were identified in 18 (24.7%), 14 (19.2%), 5 (7%), 5 (7%), and 1 (1.4%) dogs, respectively. Six

Isospora atticorae n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the white-thighed swallow Atticora tibialis (Cassin, 1853) (Passeriformes: Passeri: Hirundinidae) in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The diversity of coccidians in Neotropical wild avifauna remains significantly underestimated, particularly within the family Hirundinidae. While cosmopolitan and widely distributed hosts like Hirundo rustica Linnaeus, 1758 dominate the literature with three described Isospora spp., ecological traits of other swallows may drive different parasitic dynamics. This study provides the first integrative characterization of a coccidian parasite from Atticora tibialis (Cassin, 1853), a resident swallow strictly associated with complex and preserved Neotropical forest biomes. METHODS: Fec

Endoparasites of European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) in Germany and their zoonotic potential: proposed Capillaria ovoreticulata genetically identified as Capillaria putorii.

BACKGROUND: European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) are frequently infected with a variety of endoparasites. The hedgehogs' synanthropic lifestyle results in frequent contact with pets and humans, posing the risk of parasite spillover from a One Health perspective. METHODS: The present study assessed the endoparasite fauna and excretion intensity of 531 European hedgehogs presented at wildlife rehabilitation centres in Germany. Faecal samples were examined by the combined sedimentation-flotation method, the Baermann technique and FASTest® CRYPTO-GIARDIA Strips (MEGACOR Diagnostik GmbH) from

Impacts of Eimeria coinfection on growth performance, intestinal health and immune responses of broiler chickens.

Coccidiosis caused by Eimeria is one of the most severe chicken diseases and imposes huge economic losses to the poultry industry globally. Multi-Eimeria species coinfections are common with the most prevalent combination being mixtures of Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria tenella. Although detrimental impacts of either E. acervulina or E. tenella on chicken health are well recognized, no information is available regarding their coinfection effects so far. This study was designed to investigate the influence of coinfection with E. acervulina and E. tenella on broiler chickens. 144 one-day-old bro

Prevalence Patterns for Enteric Parasites of Chickens Managed in Open Environments of the Western United States.

Growing demand for poultry meat and eggs labeled as organic, cage free, or pasture raised has increased the number of producers that manage chickens outdoors. In these open environments, there are likely diverse enteric parasites sustained by fecal-oral transmission or passage through intermediate invertebrate hosts (e.g., worms and insects) that chickens consume. Enteric parasites can reduce chicken health and productivity, but there are few published data describing the identities or prevalence of these parasites on farms that use open environments in the United States. We surveyed 27 poultr

Assessing the sequencing success and analytical specificity of a targeted amplicon deep sequencing workflow for genotyping the foodborne parasite Cyclospora.

Epidemiological investigations of the foodborne parasitic illness cyclosporiasis can be aided by molecular techniques that enable the identification of genetically related clusters of Cyclospora isolates. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), routine Cyclospora genotyping for the purpose of informing epidemiological outbreak investigations has occurred since 2018 using clinical stool specimens from case patients diagnosed with cyclosporiasis. This approach involves targeted amplicon deep sequencing of eight genotyping markers, followed by bioinformatic processing through a c

Melatonin Administration to Pregnant Ewes for Coccidiosis Control in Their Offspring.

In livestock research, there has been a growing interest in the impact of melatonin on both health and disease conditions. The hypothesis of the present study was that melatonin treatment prenatally could support the immune competence and growth of experimentally infected lambs. This is the first study that aimed to investigate the impact of melatonin administration throughout pregnancy on immunity and oocyst excretion of pre-partum ewes and their offspring after experimental infection with Eimeria species. Thirty pregnant ewes were allocated into five equal groups, ΚΜ, ΚC, CM, CC, and NC, and
