PURPOSE: To compare ferric sulfate (FS) pulpotomy and primary tooth root canal therapy (RCT) in cariously exposed vital pulps of primary incisors.
METHODS: A total of 133 incisors in 50 children were randomly selected to be treated by FS pulpotomy (64) or RCT (69).
RESULTS: Two years after treatment, 77 incisors (41 FS pulpotomy, 36 RCT) were available for clinical and radiographic examination. There was no clinical evidence of pathosis in 78% of FS pulpotomy-treated and 100% of RCT-treated incisors. Two independent pediatric dentists evaluated periapical radiographs of the treated incisors.

Periapical lesions are common pathologies affecting the alveolar bone, often initiated by intraradicular lesions resulting from microbial exposure to dental pulp. These microorganisms trigger inflammatory and immune responses. When endodontic treatment fails to eliminate the infection, periapical lesions persist, leading to bone loss. The RANK/RANKL/OPG pathway plays a crucial role in both the formation and the destruction of the bone. In this study, the objective was to inhibit the RANK/RANKL pathway in vitro within exposed Thp-1 macrophages to endodontic microorganisms, specifically Enteroco

BACKGROUND: Glucocorticoids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are cornerstones in the management of oral inflammatory pathologies. However, their precise causal effects on a range of oral diseases and the underlying genetic mechanisms remain poorly understood. Concurrently, emerging evidence on the gut-brain axis suggests a potential connection between intestinal inflammation and the pathogenesis of oral diseases. Although preliminary data point to the gut microbiota's role in disease progression, the specific causal pathways and genetic underpinnings remain largely unexplored.

Unpolymerized resin (co)monomers or mercury (Hg) can be released from restorative dental materials (e.g. composites and amalgam). They can diffuse into the tooth pulp or the gingiva. They can also reach the gingiva and organs by the circulating blood after the uptake from swallowed saliva. The cytotoxicity of dental composite components hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), triethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (TEGDMA), urethanedimethacrylate (UDMA), and bisglycidylmethacrylate (Bis-GMA) as well as the amalgam component Hg(2+) (as HgCl(2)) and methyl mercury chloride (MeHgCl) was investigated on human g

In restorative dentistry, whilst moderate carious lesion treatment does not significantly compromise odontoblast cell survival, deep cavity preparation may lead to a partial death of these cells. However, newly formed odontoblast-like cells can replace the necrotic odontoblasts and secrete a reparative dentine matrix. Although several lines of evidence strongly suggest the presence of resting progenitor or stem cells in the dental pulp, little is known about the activation and migration of these cells in response to injury. Human immature third molars extracted for orthodontic reasons were use

BACKGROUND: A growing body of epidemiological data consistently links air pollution to various adverse health outcomes. However, the potential connection between air pollution and the risk of oral diseases remains underexplored.
METHODS: This study utilized a two-sample Mendelian randomization approach to assess the causal relationship between air pollution and oral diseases. Six categories of air pollution were considered as exposures: nitrogen oxides (NOx), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter (PM2.5, PM2.5-10, PM10), and PM2.5 absorbance. The outcomes included 18 oral health-related

The management of occlusal caries still remains a major challenge for researchers as well as for general practitioners. The present paper reviews and discusses the most up-to-date knowledge and evidence of the biological principles guiding diagnosis, risk assessment, and management of the caries process on occlusal surfaces. In addition, it considers the whole spectrum of the caries process on occlusal surfaces, ranging from the molecular ecology of occlusal biofilms to the management of deep occlusal caries lesions. Studies using molecular methods with focus on biofilms in relation to occlusa

Clinically reported reparative benefits of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are majorly attributed to strong immune-modulatory abilities not exactly shared by fibroblasts. However, MSCs remain heterogeneous populations, with unique tissue-specific subsets, and lack of clear-cut assays defining therapeutic stromal subsets adds further ambiguity to the field. In this context, in-depth evaluation of cellular characteristics of MSCs from proximal oro-facial tissues: dental pulp (DPSCs) and periodontal ligament (PDLSCs) from identical donors provides an opportunity to evaluate exclusive niche-speci

AIM: To report the multidisciplinary care of an unaesthetic geminated maxillary lateral incisor tooth, which allowed its preservation in the mouth.
SUMMARY: Preoperative examination of an unsightly geminated maxillary lateral incisor (tooth 22) demonstrated two pulp chambers and open apices, with normal pulp sensitivity responses. At surgery, a periodontal mucoperiosteal flap was reflected and the distal part of the geminated tooth was removed. The exposed root canal of the preserved tooth was sealed with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). The extraction socket and osseous defect was grafted w

The objective of our experiments was to identify new therapeutic strategies to stimulate dentin formation in an adult tooth. To address this objective, we evaluated dentin production in 2 acute trauma models: one involving a pulp exposure and the other involving a superficial dentin injury. Molecular, cellular, and histologic analyses revealed that in response to a severe injury, where the pulp is exposed to the oral cavity, cell death is rampant and the repair response initiates from surviving pulp cells and, to a lesser extent, surviving odontoblasts. When an injury is superficial, as in the
