Modeling infection transmission.

Understanding what determines patterns of infection spread in populations is important for controlling infection transmission. The science that advances this understanding uses mathematical and computer models that vary from deterministic models of continuous populations to models of dynamically evolving contact networks between individuals. These provide insight, serve as scientific theories, help design studies, and help analyze data. The key to their use lies in assessing the robustness of inferences made using them to violation of their simplifying assumptions. This involves changing model

Use of computer simulation to explore analytical issues in nested case-control studies of cancer involving extended exposures: methods and preliminary findings.

A Monte Carlo simulation program has been designed to generate case-control study data from hypothetical cohorts of individuals exposed to one or more carcinogens at intensities which vary over time. Exposure distributions are specified by such parameters as the probability of any exposure, the distributions of age at first and last exposure, the distribution of intensity as a function of time, and the correlations between exposures. Within subcohorts generated in this way, age-specific cancer rates are computed based on the multistage model of carcinogenesis (other models will be considered i

Mathematical models for lymphatic filariasis transmission and control: Challenges and prospects.

BACKGROUND: Mathematical models developed for describing the dynamics of transmission, infection, disease and control of lymphatic filariasis (LF) gained momentum following the 1997 World Health Assembly resolution and the launching of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) in 2000. Model applications could provide valuable inputs for making decisions while implementing large scale programmes. However these models need to be evaluated at different epidemiological settings for optimization and fine-tuning with new knowledge and understanding on infection/disease dynamics

Backward bifurcations in discrete-time epidemic models with vaccination.

We develop a discrete-time Susceptible-Infectious-Susceptible model with Vaccination (SISV) in which vaccination reduces but does not necessarily eliminate the risk of infection. After establishing the stability of the disease-free equilibrium (DFE), we apply an extension of the Fundamental Bifurcation Theorem to study the endemic dynamics arising when the DFE loses stability at the threshold quantity R 0 = 1 , where R 0 denotes the basic reproduction number. We find that, as with its continuous-time counterpart, a backward bifurcation may occur in this model leading to bistable dynamics pr

To trace or not to trace: analytical insights from network-based contact-tracing models.

Contact tracing is one of the most important control measures deployed during epidemics and pandemics, relying on the identification of contacts of known infected individuals. A network perspective is therefore essential for its accurate modelling. Pairwise models have been used extensively to study contact tracing, but their analysis typically depends on a decoupling assumption-most commonly that contact tracing operates on a much faster timescale than disease transmission. Furthermore, contact tracing models often assume that each infected individual becomes a contact tracing-triggering node

Why accurate risk stratification matters in HIV population modeling.

Accurate representation of behavioral risk heterogeneity significantly influences the projections of Human Immunodeficiency Virus transmission models without receiving the deserved attention when models are structured. As a result, models widely vary in how they stratify risk and how individuals progress through risk groups. We systematically evaluated how these two structural features-the number of risk groups and assumptions about risk progression (comparing three mechanisms of fixed, age-based, or mixed risk)-shape epidemic projections. Using deterministic HIV models stratified by HIV stage

Connecting mass-action models and network models for infectious diseases.

Infectious disease modeling is used to forecast epidemics and assess the effectiveness of intervention strategies. Although the core assumption of mass-action models of homogeneously mixed population is often implausible, they are nevertheless routinely used in studying epidemics and provide useful insights. Network models can account for the heterogeneous mixing of populations, which is especially important for studying sexually transmitted diseases. Despite the abundance of research on mass-action and network models, the relationship between them is not well understood. Here, we attempt to b

Stability of a stochastic brucellosis model with semi-Markovian switching and diffusion.

To explore the influence of state changes on brucellosis, a stochastic brucellosis model with semi-Markovian switchings and diffusion is proposed in this paper. When there is no switching, we introduce a critical value R s and obtain the exponential stability in mean square when R s < 1 by using the stochastic Lyapunov function method. Sudden climate changes can drive changes in transmission rate of brucellosis, which can be modelled by a semi-Markov process. We study the influence of stationary distribution of semi-Markov process on extinction of brucellosis in switching environment includ

A new explanatory model of an SIR disease epidemic: a knowledge-based, probabilistic approach to epidemic analysis.

A new explanatory model for epidemic analysis is presented; it has a knowledge based component and a probabilistic computational component. The former assembles details of household characteristics, social networks and connectivity in the community--'knowledge'--which is used to determine the structure of the computational component. The latter links individuals and households through statistically-defined opportunities for contacts and, by repeated trials, determines an average longitudinal time course (epidemic curve) of the simulated infection as it spreads through the community from incept

Valley-Forecast: Forecasting Coccidioidomycosis incidence via enhanced LSTM models trained on comprehensive meteorological data.

Coccidioidomycosis (cocci), or more commonly known as Valley Fever, is a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides species that poses a significant public health challenge, particularly in the semi-arid regions of the Americas, with notable prevalence in California and Arizona. Previous epidemiological studies have established a correlation between cocci incidence and regional weather patterns, indicating that climatic factors influence the fungus's life cycle and subsequent disease transmission. This study hypothesizes that Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and extended Long Short-Term Memory (xLST

Methodology to predict long-term cancer survival from short-term data using Tobacco Cancer Risk and Absolute Cancer Cure models.

Three parametric statistical models have been fully validated for cancer of the larynx for the prediction of long-term 15, 20 and 25 year cancer-specific survival fractions when short-term follow-up data was available for just 1-2 years after the end of treatment of the last patient. In all groups of cases the treatment period was only 5 years. Three disease stage groups were studied, T1N0, T2N0 and T3N0. The models are the Standard Lognormal (SLN) first proposed by Boag (1949 J. R. Stat. Soc. Series B 11 15-53) but only ever fully validated for cancer of the cervix, Mould and Boag (1975 Br. J

Seasonal impacts on brucellosis transmission mediated by live sheep supply-demand dynamics.

To explore how market supply-demand dynamics mediate seasonal brucellosis transmission, a non-autonomous periodic model with market feedback is developed, addressing the oversight of market-driven dynamics in existing models by integrating seasonal fluctuations of core market factors with epidemiological processes. Theoretically, coincidence degree and evolution operator theories confirm the existence and global asymptotic stability of periodic solutions in the market-disease framework, achieving methodological and socio-epidemiological modeling innovations. Validated with Xinjiang's 2018-2022

Aspirin and other nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs as cancer-preventive agents.

Several lines of evidence support the notion that aspirin and other nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may prevent human cancer, particularly cancers of the large bowel. These drugs are potent inhibitors of cyclo-oxygenases, enzymes that catalyse the synthesis of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid. In rodent models, NSAIDs consistently inhibit chemically induced neoplasms of the colorectum. Case reports and randomized controlled trials are also consistent in showing a reduction in adenomas following administration of the NSAID sulindac to patients with familial adenomatous polyposis

[Possible definitions and subsequent incidence of circumscribed reading and spelling disorders--theoretical considerations and empirical findings in a representative sample of young adults].

OBJECTIVES: With reference to an epidemiological sample of adolescents and young adults the impact of different models on the number of children classified as having specific reading and spelling problems is investigated. METHODS: Using the same set of data, the effects of alternative measurement models, definitions and methodological procedures on the prevalence of specific spelling problems are shown. The virtual consequences of various norm-oriented definitions of cases are discussed with reference to external empirical criteria. RESULTS: In the present study case definitions of specific

Lessons from sea louse and salmon epidemiology.

Effective disease management can benefit from mathematical models that identify drivers of epidemiological change and guide decision-making. This is well illustrated in the host-parasite system of sea lice and salmon, which has been modelled extensively due to the economic costs associated with sea louse infections on salmon farms and the conservation concerns associated with sea louse infections on wild salmon. Consequently, a rich modelling literature devoted to sea louse and salmon epidemiology has been developed. We provide a synthesis of the mathematical and statistical models that have b

On the Identifiability of Diagnostic Classification Models.

This paper establishes fundamental results for statistical analysis based on diagnostic classification models (DCMs). The results are developed at a high level of generality and are applicable to essentially all diagnostic classification models. In particular, we establish identifiability results for various modeling parameters, notably item response probabilities, attribute distribution, and Q-matrix-induced partial information structure. These results are stated under a general setting of latent class models. Through a nonparametric Bayes approach, we construct an estimator that can be shown

Characterization of an Animal Model of Autism and Social Interaction.

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by severe and sustained impairment of social interaction and communication, and restricted or stereotyped patterns of behavior and interest. Though multiple risk factors such as genetic and environmental components and interaction of these factors are suggested, the exact etiology is still not known. Many risk factors have been used to established animal models of psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. These models can be useful tools for testing epidemiological findings and investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying the

Heat wave mortality in New York City, 1949 to 1970.

Epidemiological studies have been carried out to search for an influence of air conditioning on patterns of heat wave mortality in New York City. Two models were used to predict total daily summer mortality as a function of temperature; one of the models included heat acclimatization effects. Ratios of the models' predictions of heat wave mortality to actual mortality were calculated for heat waves occurring during 12 summers in the period 1949 to 1970. Trends in these ratios as a function of time were sought. The analysis suggests that the relative magnitudes of excess mortality during initia
