New Mosquitocide Derived From Volcanic Rock.

Malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and the Zika and West Nile Viruses are major vector-borne diseases of humans transmitted by mosquitoes. According to the World Health Organization, over 80% of the world's population is at risk of contacting these diseases. Insecticides are critical for mosquito control and disease prevention, and insect insecticide resistance is on the increase; new alternatives with potentially different modes of action from current chemistry are needed. During laboratory screening of industrial minerals for insecticide activity against Anopheles gambiae (Giles) (Diptera: Culic

West Nile Virus and Other Domestic Nationally Notifiable Arboviral Diseases - United States, 2019.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted to humans primarily through the bites of infected mosquitoes and ticks. West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of domestically acquired arboviral disease in the United States (1). Other arboviruses, including La Crosse, Jamestown Canyon, Powassan, eastern equine encephalitis, and St. Louis encephalitis viruses, cause sporadic disease and occasional outbreaks. This report summarizes surveillance data for nationally notifiable domestic arboviruses reported to CDC for 2019. For 2019, 47 states and the District of Columbia (DC) reported 1,1

Individual variation in cardiotoxicity of parotoid secretion of the common toad, Bufo bufo, depends on body size - first results.

Anurans secrete a wide diversity of toxins from skin glands to defend themselves against predators and pathogens. Bufonids produce potent poison in parotoid macroglands located in the postorbital region. Parotoid secretion is a rich source of bioactive compounds with cardiotoxic, cytotoxic and hemolytic activity. Poison content and toxicity may vary between species, populations, and among conspecifics inhabiting the same area. In the present paper, we pre-analyzed the individual variation in cardiotoxicity of parotoid extract of common toads (Bufo bufo Linnaeus, 1758) and impact of body mass (

Factors affecting the propensity of tsetse flies to enter houses and attack humans inside: increased risk of sleeping sickness in warmer climates.

BACKGROUND: Sleeping sickness, or human African trypanosomiasis, is caused by two species of Trypanosoma brucei that are transmitted to humans by tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) when these insects take a bloodmeal. It is commonly assumed that humans must enter the normal woodland habitat of the flies to become infected, but recent studies found that tsetse frequently attack humans inside buildings. Factors affecting human/tsetse contact in buildings need identification. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In Zimbabwe, tsetse were allowed access to a house via an open door. Those in the house at suns

Female Anopheles gambiae antennae: increased transcript accumulation of the mosquito-specific odorant-binding-protein OBP2.

BACKGROUND: New interventions are required to optimally and sustainably control the Anopheles sp. mosquitoes that transmit malaria and filariasis. The mosquito olfactory system is important in host seeking (transmission) and mate finding (reproduction). Understanding olfactory function could lead to development of control strategies based on repelling parasite-carrying mosquitoes or attracting them into a fatal trap. FINDINGS: Our initial focus is on odorant binding proteins with differential transcript accumulation between female and male mosquitoes. We report that the odorant binding protei

Biomimetic Design of Biopolymer-Based Water-Resistant Food Packaging Materials.

With the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly food packaging, biopolymer-based materials are emerging as promising candidates due to their recyclability, biodegradability, and food safety. However, in practical applications dealing with high moisture content or perishable foods, their lack of water resistance poses a significant barrier, limiting their widespread use. This review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in biomimetic strategies to overcome these limitations of biopolymer-based packaging, focusing specifically on water resistance and hydrophobic biopolymer-based pa

Mosquitoes do not Like Bitter.

Chemical repellents play a crucial role in personal protection, serving as essential elements in reducing the transmission of vector-borne diseases. A biorational perspective that extends beyond the olfactory system as the classical target may be a promising direction to move. The taste system provides reliable information regarding food quality, helping animals to discriminate between nutritious and potentially harmful food sources, often associated with a bitter taste. Understanding how bitter compounds affect feeding in blood-sucking insects could unveil novel molecules with the potential t

The water-exiting behavior and survival of predaceous diving beetles in responses to lambda-cyhalothrin, chlorantraniliprole, and thiamethoxam.

Predaceous diving beetles (dytiscids) are important top insect predators in various natural, agricultural, and artificial water bodies. How they respond to human disturbances such as insecticide contamination to their habitats has been understudied. In this study, we investigated the lethal effects of lambda-cyhalothrin, chlorantraniliprole, and thiamethoxam at nominal field concentrations in 3 cm-deep water in a hypothetical paddy field (Ci,3) on adult Dytiscus sinensis Feng (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae). Lambda-cyhalothrin exhibited significant lethal effects on D. sinensis adults with its Ci,3 e

Enhancing growth, phytochemical constituents and aphid resistance capacity in cabbage with foliar application of eckol--a biologically active phenolic molecule from brown seaweed.

Although foliar application of seaweed extracts on plant growth and development has and is extensively studied, reliable knowledge and understanding of the mode of action of particular compound(s) responsible for enhancing plant growth is lacking. A brown seaweed Ecklonia maxima is widely used commercially as a biostimulant to improve plant growth and crop protection. Eckol, a phenolic compound isolated from E. maxima has recently shown stimulatory effects in maize, indicating its potential use as a plant biostimulant. Cabbage is a widely cultivated vegetable crop throughout the world, which r

The contribution of pharmaceutically active compounds from healthcare facilities to a receiving sewage treatment plant in Canada.

Concentrations and percent loadings of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) and other emerging contaminants released from healthcare facilities (2 hospitals and a long-term care facility) to a sewage treatment plant (STP) in a large urban sewershed were evaluated. An additional hospital outside the sewershed was also monitored. Fourteen of the 24 steroids/hormones and 88 of the 117 PhACs and emerging contaminants were detected at least once. Commonly used substances, including cotinine, caffeine and its metabolite 1,7-dimethylxanthine, ibuprofen and naproxen (analgesics), venlafaxine (ant

Deployed US Army soldiers' knowledge and use of personal protection measures to prevent arthropod-related casualties.

The recommendation to use personal protection measures (PPMs) to prevent arthropod-related diseases and nuisance bites is a common element of travel medicine consultation.1-3 Prevention of arthropod-related casualties is especially important to the military, given the often intense exposure of service members to biting arthropods and the threat of personnel losses to mission success. In the 1980s, 75% deet (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) was the US military-issue insect repellent for use on skin and clothing. Collaboration between military and civilian researchers led to the implementation in 1991 o

The effectiveness of putative wearable repellent technologies to protect against mosquito biting and Aedes-borne diseases, and their economic impact.

Viruses transmitted by mosquitoes threaten the health of millions of people worldwide. There is an urgent need for new tools for personal protection to ensure that vulnerable individuals are protected from infectious bites when outdoors. Here, we test the efficacy of wash-in and spray-on repellents against Aedes aegypti. When applied as a treatment on clothing as well as skin, the novel repellent compound delta-undecalactone provided up to 100% protection initially, and over 50% bite prevention for more than 7 hours. Mathematical modelling indicated that if such a repellent, with 100% initial

Effectiveness of a tailored forest package of interventions, including topical repellents, in reducing malaria incidence in Myanmar.

BACKGROUND: In Myanmar, progress towards malaria elimination has stagnated in some areas requiring deployment of new tools and approaches to accelerate malaria elimination. While there is evidence that networks of community-based malaria workers and insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) can reduce malaria transmission in a variety of settings, evidence for the effectiveness of other interventions, such as topical repellents, is limited. Since malaria transmission in Myanmar occurs outdoors, mainly among forest-goers, this study tested the effectiveness of topical repellents in combination with suppl

Eradication of ectoparasites in children. How to treat infestations of lice, scabies, and chiggers.

Infestations of head lice, body lice, scabies, and chiggers are common causes of rash and pruritus in children. Concern has arisen about development of resistance to often-used treatments, but a comprehensive approach to eradication is usually very effective. In this article, Dr Potts describes the presentation of ectoparasites and discusses conservative treatment and the safe use of pediculicides.

Rickettsial and other tick-borne infections.

Tick bites are best prevented by people avoiding tick-infested areas. When this is not possible, tick bites may be prevented by the wearing of long trousers that are tucked into boots. The best method to avoid tick bites is twofold: application of a topical deet (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) repellent to exposed skin, and treatment of clothing with permethrin. This system is currently used by the US Army to protect soldiers. Ticks can crawl underneath clothing and bite untreated portions of the body; therefore, treating clothing is imperative. Permethrin is nontoxic to humans, and can be used in a

Evaluation of the protective efficacy of a transfluthrin-based spatial repellent product to reduce malaria prevalence in Uganda: study protocol for a cluster-randomised double-blinded control trial-the Mossie-GO trial.

BACKGROUND: Progress towards elimination and eventual eradication of malaria is threatened by challenges such as the rise in insecticide resistance and low coverage of existing vector control tools. Spatial repellents offer personal and household protection against biting mosquitoes by disseminating repellents into a given area. The trial described here aims to evaluate the efficacy of an active transfluthrin-based spatial repellent device (Mossie-GO™) against malaria in Uganda, using a placebo-controlled, double-blinded cluster randomised control trial. The study's primary objective is to dem
