Complementary and Alternative Medicine Prescribing Practices Among Sports Medicine Providers.

CONTEXT: The drive for a quick return to sport after injury can be great. Athletes look to their sports medicine provider for guidance on a speedy and effective recovery. The sports medicine physician has a number of different treatment options to consider when they turn to their medical armamentarium. One of those treatment choices is complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Unfortunately, there is limited evidence for many of the CAM modalities. Furthermore, CAM prescribing practices among sports medicine physicians is unknown. The aim of this study is to determine the prescribing pract

Premenstrual syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Premenstrual symptoms occur in 95% of women of reproductive age. Severe, debilitating symptoms (PMS) occur in about 5% of those women. There is no consensus on how symptom severity should be assessed, which has led to a wide variety of symptoms scales, making it difficult to synthesise data on treatment efficacy. The cyclical nature of the condition also makes it difficult to conduct RCTs. METHODS AND OUTCOMES: We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical questions: What are the effects of drug treatments; hormonal treatments; psychological interve

Description of a clinical stream of back-pain patients based on electronic medical records.

Back pain consists of a spectrum of conditions, with no common etiology and therefore no dominant method of treatment. The purpose of this study is to describe the complexity of a collection of 8000 back pain patients who appeared in an integrative medicine clinic, as a prelude to conducing comparative effectiveness research on CAM alternatives to conventional therapy. Approximately 23% of all clinic patients were diagnosed at some time with back pain. Nearly half had treatment periods of less than one month, while more than 25% were treated for back pain for more than two years. Women were re

Changes in neck mobility and pressure pain threshold levels following a cervical myofascial induction technique in pain-free healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate if the application of a cervical myofascial induction technique targeted to the ligamentum nuchae resulted in changes in cervical range of motion and pressure pain thresholds (PPT) in asymptomatic subjects. METHODS: Thirty-five subjects, 8 men and 27 women (mean age, 21 +/- 4 years), without a current history of neck, shoulder, or arm pain participated. Participants were randomly divided into 2 groups: the experimental group, which received a real cervical myofascial induction technique, and the control group, which received a sham-manua

Review of methods used by chiropractors to determine the site for applying manipulation.

BackgroundWith the development of increasing evidence for the use of manipulation in the management of musculoskeletal conditions, there is growing interest in identifying the appropriate indications for care. Recently, attempts have been made to develop clinical prediction rules, however the validity of these clinical prediction rules remains unclear and their impact on care delivery has yet to be established. The current study was designed to evaluate the literature on the validity and reliability of the more common methods used by doctors of chiropractic to inform the choice of the site at

[Wallenberg's syndrome due to vertebral artery dissection following minimal neck injury--report of two cases].

We described two cases of the lateral medullary syndrome (Wallenberg's syndrome) due to vertebral artery dissection following minimal neck injuries. The first case was a 45-year-old man, who hit his head and often rotated his head because of posterior neck discomfort. Two years after the injury, he suffered from sudden sharp neck pain, nausea, and vertigo, which was followed by left hand numbness and difficulty in walking due to the right lateral medullary syndrome. Angiography showed right vertebral artery dissection at the fourth segment. The second case, a 48-year-old man, suffered from nec

Complementary and Alternative Medicine Therapies in relation to Self-Reported Better Sleep across Racial and Ethnic Groups in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) approaches vary across race and ethnicity, reflecting different cultural practices. However, its relationship with sleep is understudied. We investigated cross-sectional CAM-sleep associations across racial and ethnic groups. METHODS: In the nationally-representative 2012 National Health Interview Survey, participants identified their most important CAM therapies and whether the therapy yielded 'better sleep' (yes/no). We used Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence interv
