BACKGROUND: Gastrocnemius recession is performed to correct an isolated gastrocnemius equinus contracture of the ankle that may accompany foot and ankle pathology in the adult. It has been proposed that this equinus deformity leads to excessive strain throughout the foot, thus causing pain. This can manifest itself in the form of plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, posterior tibial tendon insufficiency, osteoarthritis, and foot ulcers. The purpose of this retrospective study was to review the efficacy of the gastrocnemius recession in providing pain relief for patients who have foot pain without

BACKGROUND: Boc's modification of the Austin procedure is a triplane distal osteotomy that achieves shortening and plantarflexion of the first metatarsal with a lateral translation of the metatarsal head. The clinical results and influence of the Austin and Boc osteotomies on plantar pressure have been compared retrospectively.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients were divided into two groups: 30 Austin and 30 Boc osteotomies were performed with a mean followup of 37 (range, 29 to 56) months.
RESULTS: Sixty patients with mild hallux valgus deformities and central metatarsalgia, took part in t

UNLABELLED: Although bioabsorbable pins have been used to successfully stabilize a wide range of osteotomies, to date there have been not published studies describing the results of their use for fixation of first metatarsal osteotomies in Mitchell's bunionectomy. The purpose of this retrospective investigation of 78 first metatarsal osteotomies was to evaluate the effectiveness of polydioxanone bioabsorbable pin fixation of the first metatarsal osteotomy in Mitchell's bunionectomy. The mean length of the first metatarsal preoperatively was 6.65 +/- 0.42 cm, and postoperatively it was 6.31 +/-

BACKGROUND: First metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP) fusions are performed as salvage procedures for a variety of conditions ranging from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, hallux valgus, and failed first MTP arthroplasty. A number of bone preparation techniques have been described to fuse the first MTP joint, with varying degrees of success. The aim of this study was to characterize and compare the average shortening of the first ray with a conical reamer fusion technique versus flat bone cut technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six paired cadaver feet were divided into two groups with one foot

The intermediate outcome of patients who underwent a modified Lapidus procedure for the treatment of hallux valgus secondary to a hypermobile first ray was evaluated with an outcome tool to determine if their pain and functional status were improved. We evaluated 31 feet in 26 patients who underwent a modified Lapidus procedure. All working patients (100%) returned to full-time work. Six patients were retired and one was unemployed prior to surgery. There was an average of eight months until sports or unlimited activities were performed, and an average 16 weeks until conventional shoes could b

BACKGROUND: Lesser metatarsophalangeal (MTPJ) joint instability, often presenting as second crossover toe deformity, commonly results from plantar plate attenuation. Indirect surgical approaches, such as metatarsal osteotomy or tendon transfer, can correct alignment but often lead to complications like floating toe, transfer metatarsalgia, and stiffness. The direct plantar approach allows for anatomic repair but is underutilized due to concerns about scar-related pain.
PURPOSE: To evaluate outcomes of second plantar plate repair via a direct plantar approach, focusing on pain, alignment, sati

Background: Bunionette deformity is commonly treated with distal or diaphyseal osteotomy, but concerns remain regarding correction loss, implant irritation, and metatarsal shortening. This study evaluated outcomes of mini-open fifth metatarsal osteotomy stabilized with intramedullary rigid fixation in symptomatic Coughlin type II and III deformity. Methods: This single-center retrospective observational study included 32 consecutive patients treated between February 2018 and February 2023. Radiographic outcomes included the fourth-to-fifth intermetatarsal angle (IMA), fifth metatarsophalangeal

BACKGROUND: There are limited studies on the long term outcome of Mitchell's osteotomy for hallux valgus deformity. We present the long term results of 204 cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Postoperative clinical and radiological evaluation with a mean follow up of 12.9 years was performed on patients with preoperative hallux valgus angles (HVA) of up to 50 degrees and intermetatarsal angles (IMA) of up to 20 degrees. Two crossed Kirschner wires were used to fix the capital fragment; lateral soft tissue release performed when deemed necessary. Comparisons were made between the pre- and postoperat

BACKGROUND: The cause of navicular tuberosity pain in adolescents with flexible flatfeet is not well understood. We hypothesized that some of the navicular tuberosity pain may be related to insertional enthesopathy of the posterior tibial tendon at the navicular. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to look for abnormal signal changes in a series of patients.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Consecutive adolescent patients presenting with flexible flatfeet and navicular tuberosity pain were prospectively recruited. A detailed foot examination and body fat analysis was performed. Standing radiographs

BACKGROUND: The etiology and treatment outcomes of hallux valgus (HV) are widely investigated. However, research on pain and its impact on quality of life (QOL) remains limited. This study aimed to examine the detailed characteristics of pain associated with HV and to assess how this pain impacts daily activities and QOL.
METHODS: We conducted a large cross-sectional investigation, the Hallux Valgus and Pain Epidemiology Study, in Japan. A total of 1700 participants, aged ≥20 years, provided foot photographs and completed a self-administered questionnaire. The HV angle was measured using the

"Cup-shaped power reamers" and "flat cuts" (FC) are common joint preparation techniques in first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint arthrodesis. However, the third option of an "in situ" (IS) technique has rarely been studied. This study aims to compare the clinical, radiographic, and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) of the IS technique for various MTP pathologies with other MTP joint preparation techniques. A single-center retrospective review was performed for patients who underwent primary MTP joint arthrodesis between 2015 and 2019. In total, 388 cases were included in the study. We found hi

Interdigital neuroma is one of the commonest causes of metatarsalgia. The reported success rate after excision of a primary neuroma is 74%. Recurrent symptoms after neurectomy can be due to a recurrent interdigital neuroma. Recurrent interdigital neuromas can be diagnosed using sound clinical examination and ultrasonography. Surgical excision is the best treatment modality with varying success reported in the literature. We report on the clinical outcome following surgical excision of recurrent interdigital neuromas through a dorsal approach. All patients who had undergone excision of a recurr

INTRODUCTION: The hallux valgus deformity is a complex deformity of the first ray of the foot, with more than 100 procedures developed for its treatment. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of a modified Mitchell's technique.
METHODS: Between 2007 and 2018, 75 patients underwent the procedure. Clinical results were assessed by the AOFAS score. Radiological studies were evaluated by measuring pre-operative and post-operative HVA and IMA angles as well as the relative shortening of the first metatarsal.
RESULTS: Of the initial 75 patients, 4

BACKGROUND: Low-Dye taping is commonly used to manage foot pathologies and pain. Precut one-piece QUICK TAPE was designed to facilitate taping. However, no study to date has demonstrated that QUICK TAPE offers similar support and off-loading as traditional taping.
METHODS: This pilot study compared the performance of QUICK TAPE and low-Dye taping in 20 healthy participants (40 feet) with moderate-to-severe pes planus. Study participants completed arch height index (AHI), dynamic plantar assessment with a plantar pressure measurement system, and subjective rating in three conditions: barefoot,
