Effects of an analgesic trial in reducing pain behaviors in community-dwelling older adults with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Analgesic trials have been advocated as a means to reduce pain in persons with dementia (PWDs), but few systematic studies have been reported. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to assess the feasibility of conducting a repeated-measures study of pain in PWDs and to investigate the effect of the scheduled dosing of acetaminophen in reducing observable pain behaviors in community-dwelling PWDs. METHODS: A within-subjects ABAB withdrawal design was utilized in this pilot study, with data collected daily for 24 days. Two baseline (nontreatment) phases were alternated with two t

[Childhood-onset versus acute, adult-onset traumatized patients in the light of amnestic tendencies and derealisation].

OBJECTIVES: In the present study we examined the facial affective behaviour of acute adult-onset traumatized patients versus childhood-onset traumatized patients. Furthermore, we analyzed whether a decrease in emotional numbing results from a reduction of symptoms. We used amnestic tendencies as a moderator variable. METHODS: The facial affective behaviour was coded with the Emotional Facial Acting Coding System, an instrument for the registration of facial movements with emotional relevance. The facial affective behaviour of the patient's first and last EMDR sessions was compared. RESULTS:

Understanding kinesiophobia in older postoperative patients admitted to the ICU: A narrative review of conceptual models, assessment tools, and clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Early mobilization is a key component of recovery for older patients in intensive care units (ICUs). However, psychological resistance to movement-particularly fear-based avoidance-remains poorly understood and frequently overlooked in critical care settings. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to explore the conceptual relevance of kinesiophobia (fear of movement) in older postoperative patients admitted to the ICU, examine its potential assessment challenges, and outline nursing-sensitive strategies for identification and intervention. METHODS: A purposive literature search w

Higher Right Hemisphere Gamma Band Lateralization and Suggestion of a Sensitive Period for Vocal Auditory Emotional Stimuli Recognition in Unilateral Cochlear Implant Children: An EEG Study.

In deaf children, huge emphasis was given to language; however, emotional cues decoding and production appear of pivotal importance for communication capabilities. Concerning neurophysiological correlates of emotional processing, the gamma band activity appears a useful tool adopted for emotion classification and related to the conscious elaboration of emotions. Starting from these considerations, the following items have been investigated: (i) whether emotional auditory stimuli processing differs between normal-hearing (NH) children and children using a cochlear implant (CI), given the non-ph

Role of perfumes in pathogenesis of autism.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are developmental conditions characterized by deficits in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and obsessive/stereotyped patterns of behavior. Although there is no reliable neurophysiological marker associated with ASDs, dysfunction of the parieto-frontal mirror neuron system and underdeveloped olfactory bulb (OB) has been associated with the disorder. It has been reported that the number of children who have ASD has increased considerably since the early 1990 s. In developed countries, it is now reported that 1-1.5% of children have ASD, and

Learning signs with NAO: humanoid robot as a tool for helping to learn Colombian Sign Language.

Sign languages are one of the main rehabilitation methods for dealing with hearing loss. Like any other language, the geographical location will influence on how signs are made. Particularly in Colombia, the hard of hearing population is lacking from education in the Colombian Sign Language, mainly due of the reduce number of interpreters in the educational sector. To help mitigate this problem, Machine Learning binded to data gloves or Computer Vision technologies have emerged to be the accessory of sign translation systems and educational tools, however, in Colombia the presence of this solu

The Social Impact of Musical Engagement for Young Adults With Learning Difficulties: A Qualitative Study.

There is evidence that music interventions can offer opportunities for creative, psychological, and social developments for individuals with mild to profound learning disabilities, addressing the disadvantages they face in respect of social outcomes. This paper reports on a qualitative study investigating a community music intervention for such a population. Thirty-seven adult service users (12 female, 25 male) took part in weekly music workshops for 10 weeks. Their learning difficulties ranged from mild to profound, and their levels of independence ranged from requiring constant one-to-one ca

Aberrant brain activation during gaze processing in boys with fragile X syndrome.

CONTEXT: Eye contact is a fundamental component of human social behavior. Individuals with fragile X syndrome (fraX), particularly male subjects, avoid eye contact and display other social deficits. To date (to our knowledge), this behavior in fraX has been studied only in female subjects, who show lesser degrees of gaze aversion. OBJECTIVE: To determine the neural correlates of the perception of direct eye gaze in adolescent boys with fraX using functional magnetic resonance imaging. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS: Thirteen adolescent boys wi

Social Perception of Emotional Expression in Facial Synkinesis versus Complete Facial Paralysis: A Narrative Review and Observer-Based Survey Data.

INTRODUCTION: Facial paralysis is associated with social isolation, depression, anxiety, and impaired daily functioning. Affect display, defined as the outward facial expression of internal emotional states, is a key component of nonverbal communication and plays a central role in how individuals are perceived by others. Prior observer-based research on social perception has largely treated facial paralysis as a single entity or has focused primarily on complete facial paralysis (CFP) despite meaningful clinical differences between CFP and facial synkinesis (FS). METHODS: We performed a narra

Early patterns of functional brain development associated with autism spectrum disorder in tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare genetic disorder that confers a high risk for autism spectrum disorders (ASD), with behavioral predictors of ASD emerging early in life. Deviations in structural and functional neural connectivity are highly implicated in both TSC and ASD. For the first time, we explore whether electroencephalographic (EEG) measures of neural network function precede or predict the emergence of ASD in TSC. We determine whether altered brain function (a) is present in infancy in TSC, (b) differentiates infants with TSC based on ASD diagnostic status, and (c) is associa

Vision care requirements among intellectually disabled adults: a residence-based pilot study.

Intellectually disabled adults have an high incidence of visual problems and they are often unable to communicate their visual difficulties. At Lennox Castle and Waverley Park Hospitals, vision care is through referral by medical and nursing staff to designated optometrists and ophthalmologists. This practice has provided a good service when visual difficulties are noticed. The vision care requirements of all residents had not been comprehensively assessed and a new interdisciplinary procedure developed at Waverley Park Hospital had drawn attention to the fact that only 11% had been offered vi

The Effectiveness of Cobalamin (B12) Treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder affecting 2% of children in the United States. Biochemical abnormalities associated with ASD include impaired methylation and sulphation capacities along with low glutathione (GSH) redox capacity. Potential treatments for these abnormalities include cobalamin (B12). This systematic review collates the studies using B12 as a treatment in ASD. A total of 17 studies were identified; 4 were double-blind, placebo-controlled studies (2 examined B12 injections alone and 2 used B12 in an oral multivitamin); 1 was a prospective cont

The neural correlates of social attention: automatic orienting to social and nonsocial cues.

Previous evidence suggests that directional social cues (e.g., eye gaze) cause automatic shifts in attention toward gaze direction. It has been proposed that automatic attentional orienting driven by social cues (social orienting) involves a different neural network from automatic orienting driven by nonsocial cues. However, previous neuroimaging studies on social orienting have only compared gaze cues to symbolic cues, which typically engage top-down mechanisms. Therefore, we directly compared the neural activity involved in social orienting to that involved in purely automatic nonsocial orie

Gastrointestinal symptoms and autism spectrum disorder: links and risks - a possible new overlap syndrome.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a genetically determined neurodevelopmental brain disorder presenting with restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, and activities, or persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction. ASD is characterized by many different clinical endophenotypes and is potentially linked with certain comorbidities. According to current recommendations, children with ASD are at risk of having alimentary tract disorders - mainly, they are at a greater risk of general gastrointestinal (GI) concerns, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The motor cortex and facial expression: new insights from neuroscience.

BACKGROUND: For more than a century, unusual and complex deficits in facial expression have been known to occur following localized brain damage. Some brain injuries leave the face with pronounced alterations in affect whereas others result in movement disorders such as blepharospasm and Meige syndrome. There is also a historic trail of clinical observations that document deficits in either voluntary or emotional control of the facial muscles following central nervous system damage. REVIEW SUMMARY: Recent studies in the nonhuman primate cerebral cortex reveal the existence of multiple cortica

Moving bodies, healing bonds: dyadic embodied psychotherapy in crisis settings.

INTRODUCTION: Children and parents exposed to war-related forced displacement often experience disruptions in emotional regulation, relational availability, and communicative capacities. While dyadic interventions are increasingly recognized as important in emergency contexts, less is known about how movement-based, embodied processes operate within parent-child therapeutic work during acute displacement-related crises. This qualitative study examines psychotherapists' experiences of movement-based interventions with parent-child dyads in emergency settings, focusing on therapists' subjective
