Evaluation of foreign bodies in the maxillofacial region with cone beam computed tomography and ultrasonography: an ex vivo study.

BACKGROUND: When foreign bodies in the human body are not diagnosed (detected), it can cause various inflammatory reactions. Therefore, they should be detected and removed immediately. Taking a detailed patient history, performing a clinical examination, and selecting the appropriate imaging method are important for detection. The location, structure, and size of the foreign body affect the choice of radiography technique. This study aims to compare the detectability, measurement accuracy, and acoustic behaviors of various foreign bodies in the maxillofacial region using Cone Beam Computed Tom

Closure of an open bite using the 'Mousetrap' appliance: a 3-year follow-up.

Recently, skeletal anchorage devices have been used as anchorage units for upper molar intrusion as a way of correcting an anterior open bite malocclusion. To avoid the surgical procedures associated with the placement of miniplates in the zygomatic area, mini-implants may be inserted palatally or buccally in the alveolar process. However, consideration must be given to the potential risks of root damage and a higher failure rate associated with the placement of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) in the interradicular area. The anterior hard palate provides a safer and more stable alternative

Surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion in lingual orthodontics - optimizing of coupling and timing : Best oral presentation from the 21st Meeting of German Society of Lingual Orthodontics.

BACKGROUND: Surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) is primarily used in adult orthodontics. In many cases it is followed by further surgery to address further anteroposterior and/or vertical discrepancies. Treatment times in such cases are often long with adult patients usually requesting invisible appliances. Lingual appliances can provide the mechanical control required as well as fulfil the aesthetic demands in such cases. However lingual appliances are usually custom made and indirectly bonded. Due to tooth movement following surgery there is usually a long delay before impr

Effect of premolar extraction on mandibular third molar impaction in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypothesis that orthodontic therapy with or without premolar extraction does not result in any difference in third molar impaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two groups were formed: 22 patients in one group with first premolar extractions and 22 patients in the other group without extractions. All patients were nongrowing subjects who had normal gonial angles and were skeletal Class I at the beginning of treatment. The available space for third molars, inclination of second and third molars, and angle between the second and third molars were evaluated. Also, the corre

Maxillary canine substitution for the severely resorbed root of central incisor: 12-year follow-up.

Ectopically erupting maxillary canines can cause problems that necessitate surgical, orthodontic, and restorative treatment. When a canine eruption disturbance causes resorption and requires subsequent extraction of the affected teeth, the resulting spaces are candidates for orthodontic repositioning and recontouring of the remaining teeth. To achieve successful results, the clinician must have a proper knowledge of tooth anatomy, root angulation, gingival margin position, restorative techniques, and occlusion. A collaborative effort from the pediatric dentist, orthodontist, and surgeon is req

Effects of crown movement on periodontal biotype: a digital analysis.

Orthodontic treatment has important correlations with periodontal changes. Various mechanical and biological factors are involved in determining such changes, but anatomical and morphological variables, generally addressed as periodontal biotype, play a key role. In measurement of such modifications, digital and non-contact reverse engineering technologies may be of tremendous advantage. The aim of this study is to retrospectively evaluate, in a series of digitized dental casts, some of the parameters addressing periodontal biotype and correlate them to extent and direction of tooth movement.

Inappropriate treatment of traumatic dental injuries.

Traumatic dental injuries are emergencies that must be treated expediently and efficiently to reduce pain and to restore function and appearance. With an increase in the incidence of traumatic dental injuries in our community (I) it is essential that the dental practitioner has "up-to-date" knowledge of dental trauma. The peak incidences of injury are 2-4 years and 8-10 years of age, with statistics revealing 30% of children suffer trauma to the primary dentition, and 22% of children suffer trauma to the permanent dentition by the age of 14 (I). The male to female ratio is 2:1. Aside from the

Autotransplantation of an inverse impacted dilacerated incisor: a case report with 11-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Dilaceration can lead to impaction of maxillary incisors, resulting in both aesthetic and functional problems. This case report presents the multidisciplinary approach to managing an inverse impacted dilacerated left lateral incisor in a 9-year-old male patient. CASE REPORT: The orthodontic alignment of the remaining three incisors was achieved within six months. After using the diode laser to remove the gingiva covering the right lateral incisor during alignment process, a lingual button was bonded. The primary left canine and the impacted permanent left lateral incisor were extr

Biomechanical influence of anchorages on orthodontic space closing mechanics by sliding method.

This study aims to analyse the stress distributions and initial displacements of teeth during the space closing stage through a three-dimensional finite element method. Computed tomography images of a patient were used to reconstruct the detailed teeth and alveolar bone, and brackets with stainless steel archwire were modelled according to the orthodontic prescriptions. The second premolars and first molars were chosen as the anchorages in the model 6-force, with buccal tubes attached to the second molars in the model 6-force-7, and the second molars as additional anchorages in the model 7-for

Apical root resorption six and 12 months after initiation of fixed orthodontic appliance therapy.

The low explained variance of identified risk factors for apical root resorption in orthodontic patients suggests effects of parameters related to individual predisposition. Our purpose was to explore this hypothesis. We evaluated standardized periapical radiographs of the maxillary incisors made before treatment (T1) as well as at about six and 12 months after bracket placement (T2 and T3) of 247 patients aged 10.1 to 57.1 years at T1. The radiographs were converted to digital images, and commercially available software was used to correct for differences in projection. The results showed tha

Orthodontics and dentistry for the hemophilic patient.

In this presentation we have contrasted the normal blood-clotting mechanism with the failure to form blood clots in hemophiliacs due to the absence of protein factors necessary for conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. The statistics, hereditary basis, and long-term disabling consequences of hemophilia to the severely ffected patient are described. The systemic means of minimizing severe joint disabilities and serious internal bleeding hazards by employing concentrates of antihemophilic factors to reverse the bleeding defects are discussed. Treatment of a horizontal open bite with an invisible multiloop appliance in a girl with tooth trauma.

This case report presents the treatment of a girl with a Class II horizontal open bite and severe crowding with an invisible appliance. She had been in a severe traffic accident at 5 years 10 months of age. Her teeth, especially the mandibular right lateral incisor, canine, and first premolar had ankylosed, and their roots were severely resorbed and fused to the alveolar bone. Orthodontic treatment started at the age of 12 years. The mandibular left first premolar and both maxillary first premolars were extracted to reduce overjet and crowding. The left first premolar was extracted and transpl

The influence of dental loupes on the quality of adhesive removal in orthodontic debonding.

OBJECTIVE: Bracket bonding has been a major advance in orthodontic treatment. However, the method of debonding can lead to diverse problems such as enamel fractures, enamel loss and enamel scratching. In this clinical investigation we aimed to evaluate the influence of wearing dental loupes on enamel damage during the debonding procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 22 consecutive patients were randomly assigned in a split-mouth study to evaluate adhesive removal with and without the use of dental loupes (2.5×, LED headlight). Tooth replicas in epoxy resin were made from silicone impressions. Elect

Effect of compressive forces on a bone modelling surface.

The work presented herein, is an experimental study on the effect of an orthodontic appliance with a helicoidal spring designed to exert force toward palatine--i.e. in the opposite direction to the natural vestibular drift--on a bone remodelling surface. The appliance consists of two stainless steel molar bands, with a horizontal bracket tube welded to their palatal aspect through which the arms of the helicoidal spring are passed. Wistar rats, 250 g body weight, were fitted with the device for 48 and 96 hours. One group of rats was administered two doses of tetracycline hydrochloride prior to
