GGOC-AD: a mHealth tool to challenge obsessive-compulsive related maladaptive beliefs in Spanish community adolescents: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive related maladaptive beliefs play an essential role in the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Nevertheless, there is a lack of accessible and widespread strategies capable of challenging such beliefs in the youth general population. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a mobile health tool (GGOC-AD) in reducing maladaptive OCD beliefs and symptoms in Spanish community adolescents and explore its impact on emotional symptoms and self-esteem. METHODS: A two-armed parallel randomized controlled trial (https://clinicaltrials.g

Burnout origins and psychological training needs of medical students and junior doctors: Mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Burnout continues to proliferate in medicine, with reductions in demands failing to reduce rates of burnout or distress, particularly affecting junior doctors and medical students. A broader understanding of antecedents are needed to understand how effective support can be offered. This study aimed to delineate rates of burnout in a sample of junior doctors and medical students in the wake of COVID-19, identify clinical challenges and training needs for these groups, and explore contemporary workplace origins of distress and burnout, with implications for similar cohorts internat

Investigation of the Phenomenological and Psychopathological Features of Trichotillomania in an Italian Sample.

Trichotillomania (TTM) is still a scarcely known and often inadequately treated disorder in Italian clinical settings, despite growing evidence about its severe and disabling consequences. The current study investigated the phenomenology of TTM in Italian individuals; in addition, we sought to examine patterns of self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and OCD-related symptoms in individuals with TTM compared to healthy participants. The current study represents the first attempt to investigate the phenomenological and psychopathological features of TTM in Italian hair pullers. One hundred and twent

The majority of professionally active women diagnosed with eating disorders may be at risk of work addiction: an overlooked comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Work addiction (WA) has been previously linked to several diseases and disorders, but there is scarce literature on its association with eating disorders (EDs). Both WA and EDs share similar etiological factors (notably rigid perfectionism) and clinical features. The aim of this study was to provide an initial overview of the literature on this potential comorbidity, and investigate the co-occurrence of EDs and WA, and their relationship with sociodemographic and work-related variables, health, and personality. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: In a pen-and-pencil cross-sectional study,

[Body dysmorphic disorder: One Hundred Years of Solitude].

Body dysmorphic disorder is a common psychiatric disease; its respective prevalence is 2% in the general population, 3.3% in tertiary students, 7.4% among adolescent and adult psychiatric in-patients, and above 10% in patients of cosmetic surgery or dermatology. The most important symptom of the disease is the distorted perception of bodily appearance that leads to low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, social isolation and compulsive behaviours. The disease usually begins during adolescence (average age at onset: 16.7 years), the symptoms have a rather deleterious impact on social relationship

Kickboxing review: anthropometric, psychophysiological and activity profiles and injury epidemiology.

Kickboxing is one of the modern combat sports. The psychophysiological demands of a kickboxing competition require athletes to achieve high thresholds of several aspects of physical fitness. The aim of the current review is to critically analyse and appraise the kickboxer's anthropometric, physiological, physical and psychological attributes with the activity profile and injury epidemiology in order to provide practical recommendations for training as well as new areas of scientific research. The available information shows that both amateur and elite-level male kickboxers are characterized by

[Shame and social anxiety in anorexia and bulimia nervosa].

OBJECTIVES: The importance of shame for the understanding of eating disorders has been well-known for a long time, but only few empirical studies exist to date on this aspect. Particularly the sense of self-esteem and external appearance have been attributed a major influence in the emergence of shame. Since social anxiety has increasingly been considered to be a factor in recent discussions related to eating disorders, and shame is a primary symptom of social phobia and of social anxiety in general, the present study focuses on shame and social anxiety in anorexia and bulimia, as compared to

Anorexia nervosa (AN), once thought to be a problem of wealthier, Western countries has now been documented in survey studies and case reports across geographic and economic groups; however, few epidemiological studies including interview have been done on these populations. We report on a comprehensive study on Curaçao, a Caribbean island in economic transition, where the majority of the population is of predominantly black African origin. As part of an epidemiological study on the island of Curaçao indigenous cases of AN were identified. Participants were interviewed and asked to complete st

Workplace stress and healthy aging: assessment strategies, research hypotheses, and pilot insights from the Semmelweis study.

Workplace stress is an increasingly recognized determinant of both workforce well-being and healthy aging. However, few longitudinal studies have systematically integrated stress assessment into large occupational cohorts with an explicit focus on aging processes. The Semmelweis Study, launched in 2024, addresses this gap by embedding validated stress assessment tools into a comprehensive, multidisciplinary framework designed to explore the biological, psychological, and social determinants of healthy and unhealthy aging in a university workforce. This paper presents the conceptual foundation,

[Neurological and psychiatric aspects of some gastrointestinal diseases].

The gastrointestinal tract is controlled by the independent enteric nervous system. It is also closely connected to the central nervous system, and bi-directional communication exists between them. The communication involves neural pathways as well as immune and endocrine mechanisms. The brain-gut axis plays a prominent role in the modulation of gut functions. Signals from different sources (e.g. sound, sight, smell, somatic and visceral sensations, pain) reach the brain. These inputs are modified by memory, cognition and affective mechanisms and integrated within the neural circuits of the ce

A longitudinal investigation of the factors associated with increased RISk of playing-related musculoskeletal disorders in MUsic students (RISMUS): a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The achievement and improvement of skills in musical techniques to reach the highest levels of performance may expose music students to a wide range of playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs). In order to establish effective solutions for PRMDs and to develop future preventive measures, it is fundamental to firstly identify the main risk factors that play a significant role in the development of musculoskeletal conditions and symptoms. The aim of the study is to identify those factors associated with increased risk of PRMDs among music students. A further goal is to chara

Adolescence and eating disorder: the obsessive-compulsive syndrome.

Although it is widely recognized that eating disorders primarily begin during the adolescent period, the centrality of obsessive-compulsive symptomatology and dynamisms and their relationship to adolescent conflict and development has not been generally accepted or understood. Social pressures toward conformity with the ideal of feminine thinness, which are especially influential during the adolescent period, combine with obsessive-compulsive predispositions to produce eating disorder symptoms and patterns of behavior. Obsessive preoccupation with images of food as well as ruminative calorie c

Causes and intervention strategies for appearance anxiety: a critical review of recent advances.

BACKGROUND: Appearance anxiety has increasingly been recognized as an important public mental health concern, characterized by persistent concerns regarding physical appearance and heightened sensitivity to social scrutiny. Visually oriented cultural norms, together with algorithm-driven social media environments, have been associated with appearance-related distress, particularly among adolescents and young adults, which may adversely affect psychosocial functioning. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a comprehensive biopsychosocial etiological model of appearance anxiety through a critic

Perceived vs. actual cigarette and waterpipe dependence in Lebanon: a cross-sectional study of social desirability across demographic subgroups.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is a significant global public health issue, increasingly affecting low- and middle-income countries. In culturally sensitive contexts like Lebanon, self-reported smoking may be unreliable, particularly among socially restricted groups such as women and youth. This study aims to evaluate the discrepancy between perceived and actual dependence on cigarettes and waterpipes in the Lebanese population and its association with social desirability, while also examining gender differences and patterns among self-identified non-smokers and younger individuals. METHODS: A cross

Psychological traits associated with mental and performance resilience in long-distance and ultra-endurance runners: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence on psychological traits in distance running remains fragmented across constructs, race contexts, and outcome definitions, while previous syntheses have generally addressed mental health, motivation, personality, or sport resilience separately. This review aimed to integrate and critically appraise psychological traits associated with both mental adaptation and performance continuity in long-distance and ultra-endurance runners while mapping concentrations and gaps in the evidence. METHODS: This systematic review, reported in accordance with PRISMA 2020, searched PubMed, Sc

Effects of an automated digital brief prevention intervention targeting adolescents and young adults with risky alcohol and other substance use: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence and young adulthood is a period in life when individuals may be especially vulnerable to harmful substance use. Several critical developmental processes are occurring in the brain, and substance use poses both short-term and long-term risks with regard to mental health and social development. From a public health perspective, it is important to prevent or delay substance use to reduce individual risk and societal costs. Given the scarcity of effective interventions targeting substance use among adolescents and young adults, cost-effective and easily disseminated inter

[A Portrait of Generalized Anxiety Symptoms in a Sample of High School Students: The Importance of Prevention, Screening and Intervention].

Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent psychopathologies in children and adolescents around the world. They affect their personal, family, school and social functioning. Although symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are among the most commonly observed symptoms in adolescence, relatively little is known about the most important risk factors. Objectives The purpose of the present study was therefore 1) to document the prevalence of the central feature of GAD, excessive worrying, in high school students aged 12 to 17 years, by identifying the percentage of students reporting lo
