In the frog we have studied the action of d-tubocurarine on the spontaneous discharge recorded from the whole horizontal semicircular canal (HC) nerve and from single HC afferent fibres. Gross activity was recorded in isolated head preparations. Guinea pigs were exposed to 142 dB third-octave band of noise control at 1 kHz for 1 h. At different times after exposure the endocochlear potential (EP), the anoxic negative endocochlear potential (-EP), the concentration of K+ (K+e) and microphonic potentials were recorded in scala media in four cochlear turns. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate outcomes after cochlear implantation in children with anomalous cochleovestibular anatomy, a review of radiological classification, surgical implantation, and outcome of 103 children with such anomalies was performed. The hypothesis was that children with anomalous cochleovestibular anatomy would have poorer outcomes and therefore be poorer candidates as a result of their diminished ability to interpolate and use auditory information delivered through a cochlear implant.

There are a variety of techniques available to investigate endolymph dynamics, primarily seeking to understand the cause of endolymphatic hydrops. To visualize endolymph as bright signal after intravenous injection of single-dose gadodiamide, we shortened the inversion time of heavily T(2)-weighted 3-dimensional (3D) fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) to 2050 ms. In 14 patients with suspected Ménière's disease, we observed high signal of vestibular endolymph in all ears, including 6 ears without vestibular endolymphatic hydrops. We observed high signal of cochlear endolymph in 17 ears with cochlear endolymphatic hydrops but not 11 ears without cochlear endolymphatic hydrops.

An X-linked syndrome characterized in males by profound mixed deafness, vestibular abnormalities, congenital fixation of the stapes and perilymphatic otorrhea on attempted stapedectomy has been documented in a large Caucasian kindred. Female heterozygotes have similar but milder audiologic abnormalities. The syndrome of congenital fixation of the stapes with perilymphatic gusher may be a relatively common form of X-linked deafness and is an important clinical entity because affected males may be significantly benefited by sound amplification.

Forty-one patients who had sudden hearing loss associated with spontaneous perilymphatic fistllas were reviewed in this investigation. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The detection rate of premortem MR imaging endolymphatic hydrops is lower than that of postmortem endolymphatic hydrops in Ménière disease, indicating that current MR imaging techniques may underestimate endolymphatic hydrops. Therefore, we prospectively investigated whether a novel high-resolution MR imaging technique, the 3D zoomed imaging technique with parallel transmission real inversion-recovery (3D-ZOOMit real IR), would improve the detection of endolymphatic hydrops compared with conventional 3D TSE inversion-recovery with real reconstruction.
