Unperceived hearing loss among Canadians aged 40 to 79.

BACKGROUND: People with audiometrically measured hearing loss do not always self-report a hearing impairment. DATA AND METHODS: Data were collected from 2012 through 2015 as part of the Canadian Health Measures Survey. The study sample was composed of respondents aged 40 to 79 with valid audiometric results for both ears (n = 3,964). Unperceived hearing loss was defined by four criteria: audiometrically measured hearing loss, no self-reported hearing impairment, no hearing aid(s) and no history of a hearing problem diagnosis. RESULTS: Of the 8.2 million older adults with measured high-freque

Spectrotemporal window of binaural integration in auditory object formation.

Binaural integration of interaural temporal information is essential for sound source localization and segregation. Current models of binaural interaction have shown that accurate sound localization in the horizontal plane depends on the resolution of phase ambiguous information by across-frequency integration. However, as such models are mostly static, it is not clear how proximate in time binaural events in different frequency channels should occur to form an auditory object with a unique lateral position. The present study examined the spectrotemporal window required for effective integrati

Effect of efferent activation on binaural frequency selectivity.

Binaural notched-noise experiments indicate a reduced frequency selectivity of the binaural system compared to monaural processing. The present study investigates how auditory efferent activation (via the medial olivocochlear system) affects binaural frequency selectivity in normal-hearing listeners. Thresholds were measured for a 1-kHz signal embedded in a diotic notched-noise masker for various notch widths. The signal was either presented in phase (diotic) or in antiphase (dichotic), gated with the noise. Stimulus duration was 25 ms, in order to avoid efferent activation due to the masker o

Audio-vocal system regulation in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Do children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) respond similarly to perturbations in auditory feedback as typically developing (TD) children? Presentation of pitch-shifted voice auditory feedback to vocalizing participants reveals a close coupling between the processing of auditory feedback and vocal motor control. This paradigm was used to test the hypothesis that abnormalities in the audio-vocal system would negatively impact ASD compensatory responses to perturbed auditory feedback. Voice fundamental frequency (F(0)) was measured while children produced an /a/ sound into a microphone. The

Use of psychometric-function slopes for forward-masked tones to investigate cochlear nonlinearity.

Schairer et al. [(2003). "Effects of peripheral nonlinearity on psychometric functions for forward-masked tones," J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 133, 1560-1573] demonstrated that cochlear nonlinearity is reflected in psychometric-function (PF) slopes for 4 kHz forward-masked tones. The goals of the current study were to use PF slopes to compare the degree of compression between signal frequencies of 0.25 and 4 kHz in listeners with normal hearing (LNH), and between LNH and listeners with cochlear hearing loss (LHL). Forward-masked thresholds were estimated in LNH and LHL using on- and off-frequency maske

Posttraining effects of amphetamine, chlorpromazine, ketamine, and scopolamine on the acquisition and extinction of the rabbit's conditioned nictitating membrane response.

Four experiments examined whether posttraining deliveries of drugs modified the performance of the rabbit's conditioned nictitating membrane response (NMR) during acquisition and extinction. The results show that ketamine accelerated, but that amphetamine, chlorpromazine, and scopolamine retarded, conditioning when the drugs were injected immediately after the completion of daily training sessions. However, all conditioning effects of the drugs were lost when their deliveries were delayed by 2 hr after the end of training. During extinction, the only drug that altered conditioned performance w

From internal echoes to sharing experiences: transformative learning with voice apps to enhance transgender care literacy in medical students.

INTRODUCTION: Gendered voice perception is central to gender recognition and can be a major source of distress for transgender people, yet voice and voice therapy remain marginal in medical curricula. This study examined how a digital, experiential seminar using voice-feedback applications can foster medical students' understanding of gendered voice and transgender health. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative observational study within a 135-min online seminar, "Feminize Your Resonance!", embedded in a fourth-year public health module at the Medical University of Vienna. Perception of dynamic multi-speaker auditory scenes under different modes of attention.

Attention is not monolithic; rather, it operates in multiple forms to facilitate efficient cognitive processing. In the auditory domain, attention enables the prioritization of relevant sounds in an auditory scene and can be either attracted by elements in the scene in a bottom-up fashion or directed towards features, objects, or the entire scene in a top-down fashion. How these modes of attention interact and whether their neural underpinnings are distinct remains unclear. In this work, we investigate the perceptual and neural correlates of different attentional modes in a controlled "cocktai

Deafness causing neuroplastin missense variants fail to promote plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase levels and Ca2+ transient regulation in brain neurons.

Hearing, the ability to sense sounds, and the processing of auditory information are important for perception of the world. Mice lacking expression of neuroplastin (Np), a type-1 transmembrane glycoprotein, display deafness, multiple cognitive deficiencies, and reduced expression of plasma membrane calcium (Ca2+) ATPases (PMCAs) in cochlear hair cells and brain neurons. In this study, we transferred the deafness causing missense mutations pitch (C315S) and audio-1 (I122N) into human Np (hNp) constructs and investigated their effects at the molecular and cellular levels. Alterations in Auditory Electrophysiological Responses Associated With Temporary Suppression of Tinnitus Induced by Low-Level Laser Therapy: A Before-After Case Series.

Introduction: Tinnitus is the phantom auditory perception of sound in the absence of an external or internal acoustic stimulus. The treatment is difficult due to multiple etiologies and great psychological influence. The purpose of this study was to determine alterations in auditory physiological and electrophysiological responses associated with temporary suppression of tinnitus induced by low-level laser (LLL) irradiation. Methods: This study was conducted on 20 subjects with subjective tinnitus. All subjects signed the informed consent form and satisfied all the study eligibility criteria.

Review of salicylate-induced hearing loss, neurotoxicity, tinnitus and neuropathophysiology.

Salicylate's ototoxic properties have been well established, inducing tinnitus and a sensory hearing loss when administered in high doses. Peripherally, acute dosing of salicylate causes frequency dependent reductions in DPOAEs and CAP amplitudes in low (<10 kHz) and high (>20 kHz) frequencies more than mid frequencies (10-20 kHz), which interestingly corresponds to the pitch of behaviourally-matched salicylate-induced tinnitus. Chronic salicylate dosing affects the peripheral system by causing a compensatory temporary enhancement in DPOAE amplitudes and up-regulation of prestin mRNA and prote

Binaural diplacusis in individuals with suspected endolymphatic hydrops.

OBJECTIVE: Define interaural pitch matching in individuals with suspected endolymphatic hydrops (sus-EH) and evaluate the stability of interaural pitch comparisons over time. METHODS: Sixteen adults with clinically diagnosed Ménière's disease or otherwise suspected EH (10 unilateral, 6 bilateral; aged 32-65 years) and 14 normal-hearing controls (aged 20-53 years) completed an adaptive binaural pitch-comparison task at three low-to-mid frequencies (≤1500 Hz). Using a two-alternative forced-choice paradigm, participants indicated whether sequential tones presented to each ear were higher or low

Cardiac afferent activity modulates early neural signature of error detection during skilled performance.

Behavioral adaptations during performance rely on predicting and evaluating the consequences of our actions through action monitoring. Previous studies revealed that proprioceptive and exteroceptive signals contribute to error-monitoring processes, which are implemented in the posterior medial frontal cortex. Interestingly, errors also trigger changes in autonomic nervous system activity such as pupil dilation or heartbeat deceleration. Yet, the contribution of implicit interoceptive signals of bodily states to error-monitoring during ongoing performance has been overlooked. This study investi

Long-term, partially-reversible reorganization of frequency tuning in mature cat primary auditory cortex can be induced by passive exposure to moderate-level sounds.

We recently reported that passive exposure for at least 4 months of adult cats to a two-octave-wide tone pip ensemble at 80 dB SPL, decreased the responsiveness of primary auditory cortex (AI) to sound frequencies in the exposure band, and increased the responsiveness to frequencies at the outer edges of the band. Here we expand on this by demonstrating qualitatively similar plasticity for a 6-week exposure level of 68 dB SPL. Though no peripheral hearing loss is induced by the exposure, the resulting reorganization of the AI tonotopic map resembles that following a restricted lesion of the se

A computer model of medial efferent suppression in the mammalian auditory system.

Stimulation of the olivocochlear bundle reduces basilar membrane displacement, driven auditory nerve activity, and compound action potential (CAP) response to acoustic stimulation. These effects were simulated using a computer model of the auditory periphery. The model simulates the medial efferent activity by attenuating the basilar membrane response. The model was evaluated against three animal studies reporting measurements at three levels of the auditory system; basilar membrane, single auditory nerve fibers and whole auditory nerve CAP. The CAP data included conditions where tones were ma

Stability of low-frequency residual hearing in patients who are candidates for combined acoustic plus electric hearing.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the stability over time of low-frequency auditory thresholds to better determine if the new technique of using a short-electrode cochlear implant that preserves residual low-frequency acoustic hearing can be a long-term solution for those with severe-to-profound hearing loss at high frequencies. The present study determined the long-term rate of decline in acoustic hearing in patients who have a preexisting hearing loss yet have not been implanted with a cochlear implant. A retrospective analysis of patients' audiograms that fit into the range for c

Is poor frequency modulation detection linked to literacy problems? A comparison of specific reading disability and mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss.

Specific reading disability (SRD) is now widely recognised as often being caused by phonological processing problems, affecting analysis of spoken as well as written language. According to one theoretical account, these phonological problems are due to low-level problems in auditory perception of dynamic acoustic cues. Evidence for this has come from studies showing poor discrimination of frequency-modulated from unmodulated tones. We measured frequency modulation detection limens (FMDLs) in 16 children with specific reading disability (SRD group), 16 children with mild to moderate hearing los

[Is there noise-induced hearing loss in the low and middle tone frequencies?].

Statistical material was collected on over 1000 patients with noise-induced hearing loss (expert opinions on these patients). All those patients were excluded who showed any other cause for their hearing loss i.e. head trauma, mumps, ototoxic medication, family history of hearing disease, or other causes. 200 patients showed loss of hearing at 250 Hz and 500 Hz of 20 dB or more and at 1000 Hz a hearing loss of at least 30 dB. Several matched-pair investigations with great variability of hearing loss are given. There is substantial evidence to prove that noise may damage the lower and medium fr
