Adaptation to environmental stress in Daphnia magna simultaneously exposed to a xenobiotic.

In standardized ecotoxicological testing chemicals are investigated under optimal conditions for the test organisms despite the fact that environmental factors such as predation pressure and food availability are important parameters regulating natural populations. Food limitation and predator presence can induce shifts in life-history traits in various Daphnia species, especially trade-offs in reproductive biomass allocation. These adaptive responses are thought to ensure survival of the population in a highly variable environment. A xenobiotic dispersant (used in textile dyeing processes) al

Do aposematism and Batesian mimicry require bright colours? A test, using European viper markings.

Predator avoidance of noxious prey, aposematism and defensive mimicry are normally associated with bright, contrasting patterns and colours. However, noxious prey may be unable to evolve conspicuous coloration because of other selective constraints, such as the need to be inconspicuous to their own prey or to specialist predators. Many venomous snakes, particularly most vipers, display patterns that are apparently cryptic, but nevertheless highly characteristic, and appear to be mimicked by other, non-venomous snakes. However, predator avoidance of viper patterns has never been demonstrated ex

Serologic testing of badgers to monitor plague in southwestern Idaho.

Serologic testing of badgers (Taxidea taxus) was used to monitor plague (Yersinia pestis) in a Townsend ground squirrel (Spermophilus townsendi) population in 10,000 ha of the Snake River Birds of Prey Study Area, Idaho. Eighty-six percent of the 294 sera tested in 1975 and in 1976 were positive. Significantly fewer (72%) seropositives occurred in 1977. Seasonal changes in the percentage of seropositives and the decline in 1977 were probably due to the phenology of the Townsend ground squirrel and the proportion of that species in the badger's diet. Eight Townsend ground squirrels found dead h

Heat-Stress Alters the Effects of Antibiotics on Fish Behavior.

Antibiotics are a common contaminant of freshwaters, yet surprisingly understudied compared to other classes of drugs. Even trace concentrations of antibiotics can alter the gut microbiome, in turn affecting multiple systems including physiology, biochemistry, and behavior. Concurrently, climate change is leading to higher average temperatures and more frequent temperature spikes. The microbiome of poikilotherms is also highly sensitive to temperature. Little is known of how these two stressors interact. In this study we investigated the effects of amoxicillin, an antibiotic that is widely use

Feeding ecology and behavioral adaptations shape injury patterns in central European ants.

Injuries are common in animals and represent a major threat to individual survival. They can result from inter- or intraspecific conflict, predation, or pugnacious prey. Despite their potential ecological and evolutionary importance, injury patterns remain poorly documented in animal populations. To test whether a species' feeding ecology or habitat can predict injury patterns, we quantified injury rates and affected body regions among native ant species collected from different habitats in Bavaria, Germany. Specimens were sampled using pitfall traps, which proved to be an efficient method for

The biasing effect of the "sexually violent predator" label on legal decisions.

Public fear has driven legislation designed to identify and exclude sexual offenders from society, culminating in sexually violent predator (SVP) statutes, in which a sex offender who has served his prison sentence is hospitalized indefinitely if a jury determines that he is likely to reoffend as a result of a mental disorder. Jurors rarely vote not to commit a previously-convicted sex offender as an SVP. This study tests whether the mere label of "sexually violent predator" affects these legal decisions. Venire jurors (n=161) were asked to decide whether an individual who had been incarcerate

Sensory challenges for trawling bats: Finding transient prey on water surfaces.

Bats are able to identify obstacles and prey objects based exclusively on acoustic information acquired via echolocation. To assess the echo information potentially available to the trawling bat Noctilio leporinus, prey objects were ensonified with artificial bat calls and deduced echo target strengths (TS) of the reflected signals. The artificial calls consisted either of constant frequency (CF) or frequency modulated (FM) sounds. Detection distances were calculated for call intensities of N. leporinus emitted in the field and in confined space. Measurements of a transient target consisting o

Parasite-induced suppression of aggregation under predation risk in a freshwater amphipod: sociality of infected amphipods.

Recent findings suggest that grouping with conspecifics is part of the behavioural defences developed by amphipod crustaceans to face predation risk by fish. Amphipods commonly serve as intermediate hosts for trophically transmitted parasites. These parasites are known for their ability to alter intermediate host phenotype in a way that promotes predation by definitive hosts, where they reproduce. If aggregation in amphipods dilutes the risk to be preyed on by fish, then it may dilute the probability of transmission for the parasite using fish as definitive hosts. Using experimental infections

Estimating maximum bite performance in Tyrannosaurus rex using multi-body dynamics.

Bite mechanics and feeding behaviour in Tyrannosaurus rex are controversial. Some contend that a modest bite mechanically limited T. rex to scavenging, while others argue that high bite forces facilitated a predatory mode of life. We use dynamic musculoskeletal models to simulate maximal biting in T. rex. Models predict that adult T. rex generated sustained bite forces of 35 000-57 000 N at a single posterior tooth, by far the highest bite forces estimated for any terrestrial animal. Scaling analyses suggest that adult T. rex had a strong bite for its body size, and that bite performance incre

The Genetic Architecture of Venom Resistance: A Novel Approach to Target Identification and Coevolutionary Discovery.

All species evolve under selective pressures that emerge from their interactions, often antagonistic, with other species. Phenotypes mediating species interactions manifest as the combined products of the genomes of interacting species; understanding the evolutionary processes acting in one lineage therefore cannot be attained without bridging the genomes of interacting species. Venoms have arisen independently more than 100 times in animals and serve diverse roles in species interactions, including predation and defense. Each venom is evolutionarily entwined with reciprocal phenotypes, such a

Hunting by humans affects the navigation of two endangered mammals in Zimbabwe and Brazil.

Human activities have significantly altered natural habitats, changing the behavior of many animals. As human encroachment on natural habitats increases, animals must adapt their behavior to couple with these rapid environmental changes. The landscape of fear (LOF) refers to prey perception of risk, which leads to behavioral adaptations throughout an animal's lifetime. Animals might choose habitats with lower potential energy intake and lower perceived risk over those with higher potential energy intake and higher perceived risk, thus trading off food quality for safety. Here, we investigate w

Predators can facilitate herbivory in nutrient-limited marine ecosystems.

Predators influence ecosystem functioning through consumptive and non-consumptive effects. Recent studies suggest that predators can also be an essential source of limiting nutrients in ecosystems such as coral reefs, potentially influencing prey ecology through nutrient input via their excreta. With rising commercial fishery, mesopredatory fishes are being selectively harvested from reefs. Yet, there is incomplete knowledge of the consequences of this extraction on essential ecosystem processes. Using field experiments and observations, we examined how mesopredatory fishes influence herbivory

Methyl hexenoate and linalool emitted by hot peppers repel western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) and attract their predator (Orius laevigatus).

A plant emits diverse volatile compounds and communicates with other organisms at different trophic levels. Hot pepper, Capsicum annuum, leaves produced different compositions of 41 organic compounds upon an infestation by the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis. These compounds induced a non-preference behavior to the thrips while they attracted a natural enemy, Orius laevigatus. Among the differentially emitted compounds, Z-3-methyl hexenoate (MeH) and linalool repelled the herbivore but attracted the predator. MeH or linalool biosynthesis was suppressed by virus-induced gene s

A novel spider venom peptide from the predatory mite Neoseiulus barkeri shows lethal effect on phytophagous pests.

The long-term use of pesticides in the field, and the high fertility and adaptability of phytophagous mites have led to resistance problems; consequently, novel safe and efficient active substances are necessary to broaden the tools of pest mite control. Natural enemies of arthropods typically secrete substances with paralytic or lethal effects on their prey, and those substances are a resource for future biopesticides. In this study, two putative venom peptide genes were identified in a parasitic mite Neoseiulus barkeri transcriptome. Recombinant venom NbSP2 peptide injected into Tetranychus

Giant stem tetrapod was apex predator in Gondwanan late Palaeozoic ice age.

Current hypotheses of early tetrapod evolution posit close ecological and biogeographic ties to the extensive coal-producing wetlands of the Carboniferous palaeoequator with rapid replacement of archaic tetrapod groups by relatives of modern amniotes and lissamphibians in the late Carboniferous (about 307 million years ago). These hypotheses draw on a tetrapod fossil record that is almost entirely restricted to palaeoequatorial Pangea (Laurussia)1,2. Here we describe a new giant stem tetrapod, Gaiasia jennyae, from high-palaeolatitude (about 55° S) early Permian-aged (about 280 million years a

Delicate plasticity: Maladaptive responses to fish predation risk in Daphnia magna caused by sertraline pollution.

An emerging environmental pollutant may have a greater impact on phenotypic plasticity than its direct toxicity, causing maladaptive responses of organisms to their current environment. To better understand such ecological risks, we proposed a delicate plasticity hypothesis: if an emerging stressor acts on the fundamental processes underlying a specific adaptive plastic response, it is more likely to pose high risks to the phenotypic plasticity. Endocrine regulation is one of the critical processes of plasticity and is becoming a target for emerging pollutants. To test this hypothesis, we meas

A Highly Contiguous Genome Assembly of a Polyphagous Predatory Mite Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Womersley) (Acari: Laelapidae).

As a polyphagous soil-dwelling predatory mite, Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Womersley) (Acari: Laelapidae), formerly known as Stratiolaelaps miles (Berlese), is native to the Northern hemisphere and preys on soil invertebrates, including fungus gnats, springtails, thrips nymphs, nematodes, and other species of mites. Already mass-produced and commercialized in North America, Europe, Oceania and China, S. scimitus will highly likely be introduced to other countries and regions as a biocontrol agent against edaphic pests in the near future. The introduction, however, can lead to unexpected genetic c

Effects of presentation rate and onset time on auditory brainstem responses in Northern saw-whet owls (Aegolius acadicus).

Monitoring auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) is a common method of assessing auditory processing in non-model species. Although ABRs are widely used to compare auditory abilities across taxa, the extent to which different features of acoustic stimuli affect the ABR is largely unknown in most non-mammalian species. The authors investigated the effects of varying presentation rate and onset time to determine how different features of acoustic stimuli influence the ABR in Northern saw-whet owls (Aegolius acadicus), a species known for their unique auditory adaptations and hunting abilities. High Specific Efficiency of Venom of Two Prey-Specialized Spiders.

The venom of predators should be under strong selection pressure because it is a costly substance and prey may potentially become resistant. Particularly in prey-specialized predators, venom should be selected for its high efficiency against the focal prey. Very effective venom paralysis has been observed in specialized predators, such as spiders preying on dangerous prey. Here, we compared the toxicity of the venoms of two prey-specialized species, araneophagous Palpimanus sp. and myrmecophagous Zodarion nitidum, and their related generalist species. We injected different venom concentrations

Exposure of non-target small mammals to anticoagulant rodenticide during chemical rodent control operations.

The extensive use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) results in widespread unintentional exposure of non-target rodents and secondary poisoning of predators despite regulatory measures to manage and reduce exposure risk. To elucidate on the potential vectoring of ARs into surrounding habitats by non-target small mammals, we determined bromadiolone prevalence and concentrations in rodents and shrews near bait boxes during an experimental application of the poison for 2 weeks. Overall, bromadiolone was detected in 12.6% of all small rodents and insectivores. Less than 20 m from bait boxes, 48.6
